Chapter 40: Virtual Memory

If magical power remains in an ordinary person’s body, it can cause serious damage.

Both Ye Li and Bai Muxue knew this clearly.

Ye Li knew because she had taken the common sense class for magical girls.

Why did Bai Muxue know?

Because Bai Ye had just told her.

Only then did Bai Muxue understand why Ye Li had been so worried earlier, even wanting Bai Muxue to go to the hospital for a checkup.

But Bai Muxue was not an ordinary person. She was a witch, so she could use her own magic to remove magical power from other sources.

That meant there was no problem.

“It’s nothing…” Ye Li let out a relieved sigh. “But I still think you should go to the hospital for a checkup when you have time, Xiao Xue.”

“Mm, I know. Maybe I’ll go when I have time.” Bai Muxue nodded, trying to brush it off.

Ye Li wanted to say more, but Ye Xiaomeng also walked over.

“Xiao Xue, Xiao Li, are you two okay?” Ye Xiaomeng asked anxiously.

“We’re fine.” Ye Li answered.

“I’m fine too.” Bai Muxue gave the same answer.

“Glad to hear it.” Ye Xiaomeng said. “Xiao Xue, where did you go just now?”

“Me…?” Bai Muxue was puzzled.

Ye Xiaomeng nodded.

“When everyone was sent out earlier, I found Xiao Li right away, but I couldn’t find you for a long time, Xiao Xue.”

“Ahaha, is that so…” Bai Muxue’s hand unconsciously began toying with the hair hanging by her side.

This question was a bit serious.

Bai Ye had briefly explained it to Bai Muxue earlier. Perhaps because she had used a magic barrier to protect Bai Muxue, Jieyue hadn’t sent Bai Muxue, who was hiding in the corner, out either.

This was neither a big deal nor a small one.

If things took a worse turn, it could even expose Bai Muxue’s real identity.

“What’s going on?” Ye Li also wanted to know the answer.

“Well… maybe it’s because I was hiding in a remote spot and the magical girl didn’t notice me, so I didn’t get sent out.” Bai Muxue made up an excuse.

And she wasn’t entirely lying. She really had been hiding in a corner, which could certainly be called remote.

“I see.” Ye Xiaomeng didn’t press further.

Ye Li still had some doubts about Bai Muxue’s answer. But when she saw the sincere look in Bai Muxue’s eyes, it didn’t seem like she was lying, so she let her suspicion go.

“At least everyone’s safe. That counts as the silver lining.” Bai Muxue said.

“Yeah, the three of us got separated by the crowd and still ended up fine. You could definitely say that.” Ye Xiaomeng nodded too.

Bai Muxue shot Ye Xiaomeng a surprised glance.

Could Bai Ye’s emotion magic actually do this much?

The actual chain of events was: Ye Li transformed, the two escaped, then Bai Muxue summoned Bai Ye, who knocked Ye Xiaomeng out.

Finally, Bai Ye used emotion magic to interfere with Ye Xiaomeng’s mind to a certain extent.

She never expected Ye Xiaomeng’s memories to have been distorted this much…

‘Your magic really isn’t memory magic or soul magic?’ Bai Muxue asked Bai Ye telepathically.

‘It really isn’t.’ Bai Ye spread her hands. ‘The way I interfere with her memory is to use emotion magic to stir up her feelings, which washes away her recent memories.’

‘After that, her brain automatically fills in a new memory based on the remaining fragments. That’s called a virtual memory.’

‘Normally, by this point, her old memories are mostly gone, replaced by the virtual one.’

‘Okay, I didn’t follow any of that.’ Faced with Bai Ye’s long-winded explanation, Bai Muxue chose not to try.

Something like virtual memory sounded hard to understand anyway.

Ye Li heard what Ye Xiaomeng said and found her gaze at Ye Xiaomeng turning a little strange.

Even if the cognitive barrier from a magical girl transformation could affect an ordinary person’s perception, it wouldn’t twist Ye Xiaomeng’s memories to this extent.

That meant someone else must have interfered with Ye Xiaomeng’s memories.

Who could it be?

The first person Ye Li thought of was that cat-eared witch.

But for one thing, Ye Li couldn’t think of any reason the cat-eared witch would mess with Ye Xiaomeng’s memories. For another, even if she had, would she know the right magic?

Based on Ye Li’s common sense, interfering with memories required either memory magic or soul magic.

And if that cat-eared witch knew either, she wouldn’t have been beaten by Ye Li twice in a row.

For now, Ye Li couldn’t figure it out either.

“Why are you two staring at me like that?” Ye Xiaomeng felt uncomfortable under the gazes of Ye Li and Bai Muxue.

“Nothing, nothing.” Ye Li and Bai Muxue answered at almost the same time.

Ye Xiaomeng didn’t dwell on it. She changed the subject. “Um, I still have some things to take care of, so I’m heading home first.”

“Besides, I’ll need to return this cosplay outfit later.”

“Going home… it is that late, so you should get going.” Bai Muxue nodded.

“Xiao Xue, why don’t I walk you home?” Ye Li suddenly suggested.

“This, there’s no need. I can get back fine on my own.” Bai Muxue waved her hand.

“It’s safer for two people to walk at night than alone.” Ye Li wasn’t going to drop it just because of that.

“Besides, then I can come to your place and hang out.”

“Alright.” Bai Muxue thought Ye Li had a point, and she had already turned her down once. It would be rude to refuse again.

“Make sure you get home early.” Ye Xiaomeng didn’t stop Ye Li, only reminded her.

“Mm, got it.” Ye Li nodded, though it was hard to tell if she had really taken it to heart.

Since Bai Muxue’s home and Ye Li’s home were not on the way, the three split up here. Ye Xiaomeng walked home alone, while Ye Li stayed with Bai Muxue.

Before long, Bai Muxue reached her front door.

Before she could take out her keys, the door opened. Bai Yun stood at the entrance.

“Good evening, Senior Bai Yun!” Seeing Bai Yun, Ye Li couldn’t help greeting her.

This was how she always greeted Bai Yun when they ran into each other at the Magical Girl Association.

“Senior?” Bai Muxue played dumb.

Ye Li heard this and belatedly remembered that they weren’t at the Magical Girl Association. This was Bai Muxue’s home.

And Bai Muxue wasn’t a magical girl. She was an ordinary person.

In Bai Muxue’s mind, Ye Li and her sister should have had nothing to do with each other.

This was a bit of a problem.

“It’s like this. When she was working a winter break job, she happened to run into me, and I taught her a few things. That’s why she calls me that.” Bai Yun came to the rescue just as Ye Li panicked.

Ye Li shot her a grateful look. Bai Yun gave a slight nod in return.

Close one. They had almost blown it.

As expected of a senior. Her ability to think on her feet was impressive, Ye Li thought.

“I see.” Bai Muxue nodded.
