Chapter 42: The Morning Visitor

Bai Muxue had no idea that Bai Yun’s mind was racing. She was curled up in her room playing games.

She glanced at the time and frowned slightly.

“That’s not right.”

“What’s not right?” Bai Ye, who had been watching Bai Muxue play, asked.

“It’s already almost eleven. Normally, my sister should be asleep by now,” Bai Muxue explained.

“But the lights are still on outside, right?” Bai Ye said.

“Mm.” Bai Muxue nodded.

“Then go out and see what’s going on,” Bai Ye suggested.

“Good idea.”

Bai Muxue quietly opened the door, poked her head out, and secretly watched Bai Yun sitting on the sofa.

She noticed that Bai Yun was holding a photo of herself and Ye Li.

Bai Yun just stared at the photo silently, doing nothing else.

“?” Bai Muxue was puzzled. She didn’t understand why Bai Yun kept looking at that photo.

It was just a photo. What was there to look at?

“Maybe she’s thinking about things she doesn’t usually let herself think about,” Bai Ye said casually.

“Not everyone is as improper as you,” Bai Muxue retorted.

“How am I improper?”

“How are you proper?”

“Fine, fine, I’m improper.” Bai Ye couldn’t be bothered to argue.

As the witch who controlled emotions, she could clearly see that Bai Yun’s emotions had changed dramatically.

If she weren’t afraid of Bai Yun noticing, Bai Ye might have already started urging Bai Muxue to collect emotional power.

“Humans really are complex and changeable beings,” Bai Ye couldn’t help but remark.

Bai Yun was still thinking about those things when she suddenly felt someone’s gaze on her.

She turned and met Bai Muxue’s eyes.

Bai Muxue: …

Getting caught peeking like that was a bit embarrassing.

“Muxue, is something the matter?” Bai Yun didn’t seem to care at all.

“Ah… no, nothing. It’s just that it’s getting late,” Bai Muxue answered.

Bai Yun glanced at the clock above the doorframe. It was already past eleven.

Normally, Bai Yun would never stay up this late.

But today was a bit special.

“It is late.” Bai Yun stood up. “Time to sleep.”

“Then I’ll go to bed.” Bai Muxue turned to go back to her room.

“Wait.” Bai Yun suddenly called out.

“Huh?”

“Muxue, I… can I sleep with you tonight too?” Bai Yun spoke slowly after a few seconds.

“Sure.” Bai Muxue nodded.

“You don’t need to ask, sis. If you want, you can sleep with me every night.”

Bai Muxue said this completely unaware of the change in Bai Yun’s emotions.

“Okay.” Bai Yun smiled.

The two changed into their pajamas and lay down on the bed.

In the darkness, Bai Muxue fell fast asleep, but Bai Yun suddenly sat up and placed her hand on Bai Muxue’s head.

“Mm…” In her sleep, Bai Muxue unconsciously nuzzled against Bai Yun’s hand like a docile kitten.

“…” Bai Yun looked down at the sleeping Bai Muxue, a peculiar emotion flickering in her eyes.

Then she lay back down and drifted off to sleep.

The next day.

Bai Muxue woke up groggily and heard voices talking outside the door.

She could tell one of them belonged to Bai Yun.

The other voice she couldn’t place, but it felt familiar.

“Strange… why would someone come over this early?” She didn’t bother changing clothes. She crawled out of bed in her pajamas to see what was going on.

As she walked out of the room, the first thing she noticed was the visitor’s silver-gray hair and azure-blue eyes.

There was only one person she had ever met with those features.

The magical girl who had come on to her yesterday.

Bai Muxue knew that she, like Bai Yun, was a Huiyue-class magical girl.

“I didn’t expect to see you here again.” Shi Lu noticed Bai Muxue and said to her.

“You two know each other?” Bai Yun asked.

Where had Bai Muxue met Shi Lu?

“I ran into this little one while out for a stroll recently,” Shi Lu replied.

Shi Lu’s “stroll” meant her recent trips around Changfeng City looking for the Eternal Night Witch.

Since Bai Muxue wasn’t a magical girl, Shi Lu naturally wouldn’t say that in front of her.

Of course, Bai Yun could read between the lines.

“Just a chance encounter?” Bai Yun was surprised.

If they had only met once, Shi Lu shouldn’t have such a strong impression of Bai Muxue.

But Bai Yun didn’t think much of it. She figured Shi Lu had a good memory.

Besides, Bai Muxue was strikingly beautiful, so a single meeting would leave a deep impression.

“Sis, who is she?” Bai Muxue asked.

“Her name is Shi Lu. She’s kind of my… colleague,” Bai Yun introduced.

“Hello, I’m Shi Lu.” Shi Lu walked up to Bai Muxue. “We parted in a hurry last time, so I didn’t get to introduce myself.”

‘You didn’t get to? You never wanted to in the first place.’ Bai Muxue grumbled inwardly.

“Hello, Shi Lu. I’m Bai Muxue.” Despite her inner grumbling, Bai Muxue kept a smile on her face.

“It sounds like something happened between you two?” Bai Yun realized from Shi Lu’s words that it wasn’t just a simple encounter.

“Yeah, something did happen.” Shi Lu nodded. “But let’s not talk about it.”

Shi Lu was too embarrassed to tell Bai Yun about being scammed out of five thousand yuan, especially with the culprit standing right there.

“Alright.” Bai Yun wasn’t one to pry. Since Shi Lu didn’t want to talk about it, she didn’t press.

“How is it?” Bai Yun asked.

“Looks fine on the surface,” Shi Lu said. “But I’ll need to run some further tests.”

“Tests…?” Bai Muxue took a step back.

‘Could this Shi Lu be planning to do something weird to me?’

In an instant, her mind jumped to all sorts of things, like drug injections, slicing her open for research, and worse.

Just thinking about it sent a chill down her spine. She backed up a few more steps, putting more distance between herself and Shi Lu.

Before Shi Lu could figure out what was happening, she saw that Bai Muxue was now one step away from her room.

“D-don’t come any closer! If you do, I’ll scream!”

Shi Lu and Bai Yun exchanged a glance. The latter’s eyes held a hint of helplessness.

“Muxue, it’s just a normal physical check-up. No need to be this nervous.” Bai Yun stepped forward and said soothingly.
