Chapter 16: Stage Two

“Congratulations on passing the first stage. The second stage is about to begin!” Bai Ye’s voice reached Lan’s ears.

“Who are you?! Show yourself!” With one hand gripping the back of Bai Muxue’s neck and the other holding a golden rapier, Lan scanned her surroundings warily.

Bai Ye’s magic spread through the air around them.

Compared to Lan’s tension, Bai Muxue was more excited.

‘Is this slacker, who has been goofing off for so long, finally going to get serious?!’

Lan could clearly feel that Bai Ye’s magic was more than a whole tier above Bai Muxue’s.

But what she didn’t know was that this was Bai Ye’s state after a severe injury. If Bai Ye were at her peak, she could crush a magical girl of Lan’s level with a flick of her finger.

Bai Ye had only lost to the top-tier magical girls, after all.

“Since you’re so eager to see me, I’ll grant your wish.” Bai Ye’s figure slowly materialized in front of Lan.

Bai Ye had lost her body in the battle against magical girls like Jieyue, but she could always re-form one with magic.

In this state, Bai Ye could interact with the world and be seen by others.

Of course, forming a body with magic wasn’t without cost. It meant her magic would drain much faster.

Lan noticed that the girl before her looked very much like the Bai Muxue in her grip. She was just taller and slimmer, basically a scaled-up Bai Muxue.

Since Bai Ye dared to show herself, she had disguised herself, at least enough that no one would recognize her as the Eternal Night Witch.

“Shadow Sweep.” Bai Ye waved her hand, and the pitch-black scythe lying on the ground turned into a wisp of black mist that flew into her palm.

The mist in her hand quickly re-formed into the same pitch-black scythe.

Shadow Sweep. That was the name of Bai Ye’s weapon.

“The real fight starts now~” Bai Ye smiled.

The next instant, Bai Ye was right in front of Lan.

“So fast!” Lan didn’t even see her move. In a split second, Bai Ye had crossed several meters and appeared before her.

Bai Ye’s scythe came down.

Lan couldn’t fend off Bai Ye’s attack while holding Bai Muxue, so she tossed Bai Muxue aside and channeled all her magic.

Bai Muxue, thrown to the side, couldn’t join the fight in her current state anyway. All she could do was watch.

“Holy Light, Judgment!” The rapier in Lan’s hand burst with dazzling golden light.

She poured all her magic into that one strike and swung.

Rapier and scythe clashed once more.

The fight between Lan and Bai Ye took place deep in a deserted corner, and neither side made much noise, so nobody noticed.

“So strong…” Lan barely blocked Bai Ye’s attack, but if you looked closely, her whole body was trembling, especially her hands, which shook badly.

This was the first time she’d faced such a powerful enemy.

“Oh? I didn’t expect you to block that. Though it was just a casual swing on my part.” Bai Ye was a little surprised.

After a moment’s hesitation, Bai Ye applied a bit more force, and Lan was sent flying.

While Lan was still in the air, Bai Ye pulled Bai Muxue, who had been watching from the side, over and undid her restraints with magic.

“Whew, finally free. She really tied me up tight,” Bai Muxue said.

“And… could you put me down first?”

Bai Ye was holding Bai Muxue with one arm, and because of the height difference, Bai Muxue’s feet couldn’t touch the ground.

“Sure.” Bai Ye set her down. “But you really are weak, you know. I even lent you my weapon, and you still couldn’t beat her?”

“I just don’t have enough experience…” Bai Muxue’s voice weakened.

“There really are two witches…” Lan didn’t continue attacking. Instead, she stayed where she was and steadied herself.

The hand holding the rapier was still trembling slightly, which just showed how much stronger Bai Ye was than her.

Lan’s only way out now was to seek help from the Association.

Every magical girl carried a communicator specially made by the Association. She could use it to call the magical girl nearest to her for help.

But would Bai Ye give her that chance?

The answer was no.

“We need to end this quickly.” Bai Ye knew that while her fight with Lan hadn’t attracted any bystanders, the magic signatures from both sides could very likely be noticed by magical girls nearby.

If that happened, it would turn into a free-for-all.

“This next strike will hurt a little. I hope you can bear it,” Bai Ye said to Lan.

“I walk with darkness, and my heart knows no light.”

Bai Ye appeared before Lan in an instant. The scythe fell.

If that strike connected, Lan would be severely wounded at the very least.

Bai Ye’s attack was too fast for Lan to defend. By the time she reacted, the scythe was almost on her.

If things went on like this, Lan would definitely be gravely injured by that blow.

But then, a new magical girl joined the battle.

“When did Changfeng City get new witches? And two of them at once?” A girl with long pink hair appeared out of nowhere.

She wore a pink puffy dress decorated with jewel-like ornaments and ribbons, with a pink gem set at her chest.

White thigh-high stockings covered her legs.

The cherry-pink long blade in her hand caught the scythe and stopped Bai Ye’s attack.

“Ah… it’s dragged on too long after all.” Bai Ye met the pink-haired girl’s eyes. “And who might you be?”

“You may call me Magical Girl Lian,” the pink-haired girl replied.

“I’ll remember that name.” Bai Ye returned to Bai Muxue’s side and grabbed Lan on the way.

She nearly got cut by Lian again for that.

“You stay here and watch her. This pink-haired magical girl is no pushover. You’d be useless in a fight with her.” Bai Ye tied Lan up and tossed her to Bai Muxue.

Bai Muxue caught Lan and nodded.

“Let me go!” Lan struggled in Bai Muxue’s arms, but she couldn’t break free of Bai Ye’s restraints.

“Dawn and Dusk.” Bai Ye reached Lian in an instant and swung her scythe.

“Cherry Blossom Sword Art: Hundred Cuts.” Lian raised her blade and delivered a hundred slashes in an instant.

In that exchange, Bai Ye came out on the losing end. Her left shoulder was pierced through by the long blade, but no blood flowed.

“I really can’t win this one. And I’m not sure I can run, either. The gap in strength is too big.” Bai Ye withdrew.

“So what do we do now?”

“Hmm… don’t rush. I have a good idea.” Bai Ye glanced at the captured Lan, and a plan quickly took shape in her mind.

“First we do this, then that, and finally that…” Bai Ye connected with Bai Muxue telepathically and quickly shared the plan.

“It’s a bit of a dirty trick, but it should work… Let’s do it.” Bai Muxue nodded.
