Chapter 20: Night Demon – Thank you for taking care of my boyfriend

Jiang Shulan had no idea what Night Demon did for a living.

The man’s physique was exceptional. His back was straight as a pine tree, his center of gravity steady, and there wasn’t an ounce of unnecessary fat on his body. Every angle radiated the kind of practical strength that could only be forged through relentless training.

In the past, if he had encountered a handsome man with a body like this, Jiang Shulan would have eagerly run over to ask which gym he trained at.

Now, however, he hated it.

With his eyes covered, his other senses became painfully sharp.

He could hear Night Demon’s low, almost sensual breathing.

He could hear the wet sounds of swallowing.

He could feel his own body growing hot.

Burning.

Behind him was the open window.

His instincts screamed at him to grab onto something before he lost his balance and fell.

But Night Demon was dressed in tight black clothing. Every inch of him was solid muscle. There was nothing for Jiang Shulan to hold onto.

Worse still, Night Demon kept pressing closer, steadily invading what little personal space remained.

‘Damn it.’

Why did he have to be built so well?

Tears streamed from the corners of Jiang Shulan’s eyes, soaking the hood covering his face.

Night Demon’s dark eyes were half-lidded, his expression seemingly indifferent.

Yet one hand firmly held the back of Jiang Shulan’s head while the other gripped his waist, keeping him trapped securely against his chest.

Rain poured violently outside.

Inside, chaos raged no less fiercely.

A minute might have passed.

Or perhaps much longer.

Jiang Shulan’s oxygen-deprived brain had long since lost track of time.

Finally…

“Cough-! Cough-!”

He gasped desperately for air, clutching his throat while coughing uncontrollably.

It felt as though something was still lodged there.

The hood covering his head was removed.

Instinctively, he squeezed his eyes shut.

When he opened them again, his vision had returned.

He watched Night Demon calmly put the hood back on.

The area around the eye holes and mouth seemed noticeably darker than the rest.

“You… you pervert!”

Jiang Shulan’s voice trembled.

His ears were already red.

Now they looked as though they might bleed.

Night Demon pressed his tongue against the roof of his mouth.

The lines of his face tightened.

His voice was cool and distant.

“What? I thought you liked it.”

This was completely different from the man who moments ago had looked ready to pin him down and lose control.

“Go to hell!”

A gunshot exploded through the room.

A-jin stood in the doorway holding the hunting rifle he had taken from the basement.

He had fired.

Night Demon collapsed to the floor.

Dark red blood flowed rapidly from the wound.

He lay motionless.

Jiang Shulan hated bloody scenes.

He immediately shut his eyes.

[System! What do we do if the BOSS dies?!]

This was the first time he’d ever encountered such a situation.

The BOSS had died before he did!

[A horror movie BOSS is essentially a conceptual entity. He won’t truly die.]

[Huh?]

[Then do I still have time to go trigger a trap?]

A-jin’s actions answered that question with a firm no.

After Night Demon fell, the police arrived quickly.

Both Jiang Shulan and A-jin were rushed to the hospital.

A-jin’s injuries were severe.

According to the doctors, several fishhooks had been embedded in his face.

A massive hook had pierced near his spine.

There was a huge wound across his abdomen.

The surgeons had even discovered a live cockroach wriggling inside the injury.

A-jin remained in intensive care for days.

During that time, his employer Michael finally stabilized.

Victoria, whose injuries were relatively minor, brought Hannah and Jill to visit him.

Yet A-jin still hadn’t woken up.

To thank him, Michael paid off all of A-jin’s debts and gave a large sum of money to A-jin’s wife and daughter.

Only then did Jiang Shulan learn that A-jin supposedly had a wife and daughter.

The misunderstanding was quickly cleared up.

The woman was actually A-jin’s sister-in-law.

A-jin truly was a good person.

A very kind person.

Jiang Shulan decided to stay in the hospital room and wait for him to wake up.

Partly to make sure Night Demon didn’t somehow come back and kidnap poor A-jin.

And partly because…

The nurses treated him ridiculously well.

On the very first night after his admission, his delicate appearance attracted the attention of every nurse on duty.

Some of the bolder ones even pinched his cheeks.

The next morning, Jiang Shulan woke up to find his face red and swollen.

He genuinely thought he was having an allergic reaction and went to see a doctor, creating quite an embarrassing misunderstanding.

“Drink some milk.”

“Here, have some cake. Strawberry, blueberry… and the baked sweet potatoes and roasted potatoes you mentioned before.”

“No, no, no. He shouldn’t be eating those right now.”

Jiang Shulan blinked.

“…But I want to.”

Dressed in an oversized hospital gown, he looked even smaller than usual.

Thick bandages wrapped around his slender arms.

The pitiful sight instantly melted every nurse’s heart.

“Fine. Just this once.”

“I’ll keep watch. If the doctor comes, I’ll warn you.”

“Thank you, big sister~”

Jiang Shulan happily collected a huge pile of snacks.

Grinning from ear to ear, he closed the door.

Then immediately froze.

A-jin was awake.

And he was looking at him with gentle eyes.

‘Oh no.’

A-jin had kissed him before.

Jiang Shulan suddenly wanted to scream.

He didn’t know where to put his hands.

He didn’t dare meet A-jin’s gaze.

Tilting his head awkwardly, he searched desperately for something to say.

“You’re awake?”

“Mm.”

A-jin noticed his discomfort.

He rubbed his nose.

But he had no intention of backing down.

“Do you have a boyfriend?”

“Huh?”

Jiang Shulan scratched his head.

According to his character profile, he did have a boyfriend.

Although he probably wouldn’t meet him.

After talking to A-jin, he planned to sneak back to the house and trigger a trap to complete his mission.

Naturally, he couldn’t tell A-jin that.

So he answered directly.

“Sorry. I have a boyfriend.”

A-jin lowered his eyes.

Disappointment flashed across his face.

Still, he forced himself to ask:

“Do you?”

“Are you two happy together?”

“Very happy!”

Jiang Shulan immediately gave a thumbs-up.

To completely kill any romantic hopes, he deliberately put on the sweetest smile possible.

“He treats me amazingly. He loves me so much, and I love him too. We’re going to be together forever. We’re even getting married tomorrow!”

“Tomorrow?”

A-jin repeated softly.

“Tomorrow might be a little difficult.”

A deep voice came from the doorway.

The hospital room door opened.

A man stepped inside.

He wore a custom-tailored dark gray cashmere coat.

The cut was impeccable.

The fabric looked soft and understated.

Underneath was a black turtleneck sweater.

Dark dress pants and polished black shoes completed the outfit.

There were no obvious luxury logos anywhere.

Yet every detail spoke of refinement.

He was tall.

Broad-shouldered.

His features were handsome and restrained.

A straight nose.

A sharp jawline.

Standing there quietly, he exuded an effortless elegance born from years of privilege and self-control.

“Hello. My name is Philip.”

The man smiled politely.

“Thank you for taking care of my boyfriend.”

The words were courteous.

But beneath them lurked something chilling.

Something violent.

Something that felt eerily familiar.
