Chapter 5: A Deadly Joke – It Was Just a Joke

Louis and Fuller had already successfully met Vina, at the cost of abandoning Jiang Shulan.

“Why do you both look so pale?” Vina frowned in confusion.

“Listen, Vina, maybe we should call the police,” Louis said, gripping his sweat-soaked collar, his heart pounding. “We made a mistake. A mistake I deeply regret.”

He shouldn’t have given up Jiang Shulan. Maybe if they called the police now, they could still save him…

If only he hadn’t pretended to be a woman. If only he hadn’t brought Jiang Shulan into the car.

Louis was filled with regret.

“What?” Vina still didn’t understand.

Seeing that she still didn’t get it, he stopped trying to explain and hurriedly dialed the police.

“Hello, we have a si-”

“He’s just joking,” Fuller interrupted, covering his mouth and speaking to the police on the other end in a casual tone. “Just a joke.”

The American police officer hung up the phone, cursing.

Their workload had already been heavy because of that damn “Rusty Nail,” and now there were still people wasting their time!

But just as he thought of the name “Rusty Nail,” he couldn’t help but shudder.

This killer was undoubtedly the most brutal criminal he had encountered in over twenty years as a police officer, inhuman, ruthless, as if a demon crawled out of hell, venting endless rage.

If Rusty Nail continued committing crimes, they would soon be able to locate his position. But for some unknown reason, he had completely disappeared in the past few days.

“Fuller!”

Louis grabbed Fuller by the collar. “Do you really want to see Jiang’s corpse on the news?”

They had gone through all recent murder cases. Everyone targeted by Rusty Nail had never escaped. Even when the police mobilized massive manpower, they couldn’t even recover intact bodies…

“Listen, Louis, that guy is a psychopath, a killer, a criminal,” Fuller argued weakly. “We’re not his match. Jiang is just an Asian guy. Maybe after a month, a year, no one will care anymore.”

“In America, isn’t it normal for an Asian person to disappear without a trace?”

“Holy shit!”

Louis punched Fuller hard. “If you hadn’t insisted on telling Rusty Nail-”

“Wait! You said ‘Rusty Nail’? That serial killer from the news? Jiang was taken by him?”

Because Jiang Shulan was very popular at their school, Louis had already told Vina about it after picking him up.

Vina, who had been disappointed not to see Jiang, felt her heart drop after hearing their conversation.

“You two aren’t real men! I’m calling the police! We have to save Jiang!”

Ring-ring-

The hotel phone rang.

Louis and Fuller froze at the same time. Only Vina answered it.

“Louis, it seems you still haven’t done what I told you.”

Rusty Nail’s deep, magnetic voice came through the phone like a death knell echoing in the silent room.

“Run!”

Before they could react, Vina was grabbed by Louis, and the three of them rushed into a car.

But Rusty Nail wasn’t done with them.

“…Louis, what did you promise him?” Fuller licked his dry lips.

“Vina,” Louis said with difficulty, swallowing hard. “He wants Vina.”

To save his brother, he gave up Jiang Shulan. But he couldn’t abandon Vina for himself…

“He already has Jiang! Is he insane?!” Fuller cursed.

Suddenly, Louis froze on the steering wheel.

In the rearview mirror, a black dot appeared. At first, he didn’t care, but it grew bigger, closer.

The front of the vehicle behind them was enormous, like a moving wall. Its black paint glinted ominously under the sun. The grille looked like a row of metallic teeth, trembling at high speed like a roaring beast ready to tear something apart.

And they were its prey.

“Louis, faster! Drive faster!”

“Oh my God, it’s coming for us!”

“It’s going to hit us! Please, do something!”

Amid screams and curses, Louis gritted his teeth and slammed the accelerator.

The old engine roared. The speedometer needle slowly climbed from 70 to 80.

The distance shrank.

500 meters. 400. 300. 100.

He could already hear the truck’s engine, like a heartbeat merging with his own.

Damn it.

He pressed the accelerator to the floor, but a worn-out secondhand car could never outrun a heavy truck.

All he could do was jerk the steering wheel left.

But Rusty Nail had already predicted it.

The impact exploded behind them.

CRASH-

The taillight shattered, red fragments scattering. The left rear wheel was crushed inward. The suspension snapped. Metal scraped against rubber, spraying debris mixed with rainwater.

The entire rear of the car twisted.

The trunk frame was exposed, the bumper torn apart, the rear window shattered into dust.

It started raining.

Louis gasped, shaking.

“He’s toying with us! F*ck!”

Fuller screamed, clutching his bleeding leg.

“Shut up!”

From the beginning, they had been completely played. Every decision they made, every turn, every escape route, had been anticipated. That was why the truck could destroy their car so precisely, leaving Fuller injured but sparing Louis and Vina with only minor injuries.

Louis dragged Vina out of the wreckage, noticing a car radio placed in the back seat.

“Don’t be angry,” Rusty Nail’s voice came through the radio, calm and almost gentle, like a professor teaching a class.

“Just a joke.”

Louis stood up shakily and looked at the truck behind them. Its headlights were still on, blinding him.

“I’m sorry! We won’t do something like that again!” he cried.

Maybe they would all die here today. And maybe that would be fine, at least they could die with Jiang Shulan.

“Hey! Are you okay?”

Someone on the truck tried to jump down, but a taller figure grabbed him and carried him out.

“I said don’t carry me!”

Jiang Shulan slapped Rusty Nail across the face and ran forward without looking back, his hair brushing past Rusty Nail’s nose.

Louis froze.

The person he thought had been long dead and buried was completely unharmed, and even looked healthier than before. Only the corners of his eyes were slightly red, and his walking seemed a bit off.

Louis, who had dated many girls before, immediately understood what that meant.

“Louis, I’m sorry. I really tried to stop him, but I wasn’t strong enough…”

Jiang Shulan frowned at the scene.

“I already called the police and an ambulance. They’ll be here soon. Hold on, Louis? Louis? Help your brother! Louis?”

He waved his hand in front of Louis’s blank stare.

“Louis? Are you okay?”

Before he could react, a warm body pressed against Jiang from behind.

Rusty Nail’s hand wrapped around his, and a soft kiss brushed his ear.

“Baby, you called the police? They’re coming to arrest me?”

“Yes!” Jiang Shulan stepped hard on his foot. “I’m calling the police on you! You’d better be locked up until you rot!”

“Then you’re my accomplice,” Rusty Nail said calmly. “Everyone saw you leave my car unharmed.”

“Unharmed?! Are you serious?!”

“You are my conscience,” he said softly. “Only by hurting you a little do I feel like I’m still human.”

He pressed Jiang’s hand against his chest.

“My baby.”

His gaze swept briefly over Louis, cold, dark, and possessive.

Mine.

Get lost.

Louis lowered his head awkwardly. “Thank you.”

His voice was soft, but Rusty Nail’s presence was overwhelming. Jiang didn’t notice him.

As long as Jiang was safe, that was enough.

Even if he wasn’t forgiven. Even if he was hated.

Louis lifted his head again, ready to face everything he had done.

But the space in front of him was already empty.

“Jiang?”
