Join the ServerKramer’s car came to a stop in front of a run-down apartment building.
“You two go on up,” Kramer said with complete seriousness. “I’ll keep watch for my master.”
“Keep watch?”
“That’s right. I want to learn some exorcism techniques from him. Master says the most important thing when performing an exorcism is to stay aware of your surroundings at all times.”
Jiang Shulan blinked.
During the time they had lived together, he had never once heard Constantine say anything like that.
“The most important thing?”
In his memory, Constantine always looked relaxed, a cigarette hanging from his lips, casually sprinkling holy water over shrieking demons beneath his feet. Sometimes Jiang Shulan could hardly tell who the real demon was.
“That’s right. If one day you’re not by my side and I run into a demon, what am I supposed to do?”
Without hurry, Constantine splashed holy water over the creature and ignored its screams.
“I won’t leave you alone.”
“Come on, are you going to teach me or not?”
With a helpless sigh, Constantine replied, “Of course. The most important thing is to protect yourself and never let a demon deceive you.”
Jiang Shulan came back to the present.
Kramer had already climbed obediently back into the car, apparently prepared to stand guard there all night.
Just how thick was Kramer’s fan filter when it came to Constantine?
“Mr. Jiang?”
“Oh, sorry. Let’s go.”
The farther upstairs they walked, the more puzzled Jiang Shulan became.
Why was Constantine living in a place like this?
The rewards he earned from exorcisms were enough to buy several villas.
Angela knocked on the door several times, but there was no answer, as though no one was home.
Yet Kramer insisted Constantine was inside.
Was Constantine really the protagonist here?
With a sigh, Jiang Shulan raised his hand and knocked.
“Constantine, I need to talk to you. Could you open the door?”
As soon as Angela had her meeting with him, Jiang Shulan intended to leave.
The door swung open almost immediately, before he had even lowered his hand.
The man standing there was both familiar and unfamiliar.
His complexion was pale, his cheeks noticeably thinner, making his eyes seem darker and brighter, like two flames burning in the night.
The words Jiang Shulan had prepared about leaving caught in his throat.
“Constantine…” he asked hesitantly. “Are you sick?”
“It’s only a cold.”
Constantine stepped aside.
“Come in.”
He had just finished smoking.
To hide the smell, he had sprayed on an excessive amount of cologne. It should have been overwhelming, but Jiang Shulan’s senses were famously dull.
Sure enough, Jiang Shulan noticed nothing and quietly curled up on the sofa.
Angela used the opportunity to question Constantine.
Jiang Shulan paid little attention to their conversation.
He had already decided to cut ties with Constantine, but when he saw the peeling walls and battered furniture, he found himself unable to harden his heart.
After Angela finished asking her questions and left, Jiang Shulan finally spoke.
“Constantine, tell me honestly. Did you borrow money from loan sharks?”
“No.”
“Then why are you treating yourself like this?”
“I donated all my money.”
The words escaped Jiang Shulan before he could stop them.
“You’re actually that kindhearted?”
The moment he said it, he covered his mouth with both hands.
“Sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.”
“You’re right.”
Running a hand through his hair, Constantine leaned on the table, looking exhausted.
“I only did those things because I wanted to get into Heaven after I die.”
“Huh?”
“I’m afraid I’ll go to Hell.”
“How could you? You’ve helped so many people. You’ll definitely go to Heaven.”
“But I only helped them for my own sake…”
Jiang Shulan had never imagined Constantine had chosen such a meager life simply to reach Heaven.
Half amused and half sympathetic, he smiled.
“There’s an old saying where I come from: Judge a gentleman by his actions, not his motives. If what you do benefits others, people won’t care why you did it.”
“But He doesn’t see it that way.”
“Who? I’ll go convince Him!”
After all those inspirational stories he’d heard growing up, he wasn’t about to lose an argument.
“He’s God.”
“So what? Doesn’t God ever make mistakes? Even machines malfunction.”
“But God created everything.”
“Then tell Him to create me a little cake right now. He can’t, can He?”
Seeing Constantine remain silent, Jiang Shulan planted his hands on his hips.
“How can someone who usually acts like he’s invincible be fooled so easily?”
For the past six months, the shabby apartment had been where Constantine spent most of his time.
It had been lifeless and filthy. He dulled his mind with cigarettes, finding brief moments of peace in the smoke. Everything around him felt empty; no amount of noise could stir his attention.
But the instant Jiang Shulan walked through the door, he suddenly realized that the sofa was soft, the floor was covered with rugs, and the refrigerator still held freshly bought slices of cake every day, even though no one had ever come to eat them.
Without realizing it, he had arranged the place exactly as Jiang Shulan would have liked.
His eyelids lowered, shadows gathering in his gaze until they resembled frightening possessiveness.
How could he possibly let this person go?
His throat felt tight, his lips dry, like a traveler dying of thirst in the desert.
And the one person who could save him stood right in front of him, defenseless, clear-eyed, and carrying a faint sweetness.
His Adam’s apple bobbed.
“I want to kiss you,” he murmured. “May I?”
“No! Didn’t you already break up with me?”
The young man kept talking, every movement of his lips drawing Constantine’s attention.
“I still don’t even know when we supposedly started dating, but if we broke up, then we broke up. Besides…”
“I have lung cancer.”
The room fell silent.
“I only arranged all of this and asked someone to pretend because I wanted you to leave me.”
Just as he had expected.
Jiang Shulan’s heart was too soft. Hearing the truth, he looked at Constantine with shock and pity.
Constantine stepped forward and wrapped an arm around him before he could retreat.
Pity was enough.
If pity gave him another chance, he would take it.
He had no intention of letting go, never again.
