The massive body shot forward like a fully drawn bowstring released, accompanied by a deep whooshing sound as it swept over the ground.
Its scales scraped against vines, producing a dense rustling noise.
Ferns and rotting leaves were thrown into the air in its wake, leaving behind a trail of brown debris.
Jiang Shulan was afraid of snakes because they were slippery and impossible to guard against.
But this black python was so enormous that, strangely enough, it gave him a sense of security.
He estimated the size of the black python’s body.
Then he looked at himself.
Very good.
He wasn’t even enough to get stuck between its teeth.
At least when he died, it probably wouldn’t look too ugly.
Jiang Shulan gave up resisting.
The black python stopped in front of a cave.
It set him down on the ground and nudged him with its enormous head, signaling for him to go inside.
The force of the nudge nearly made him stumble.
He didn’t want to go in.
Wasn’t it going to eat him?
Or did it think he was too small and wanted to fatten him up first?
A long pain was worse than a short one.
Rather than living in fear every day, he would rather log off immediately.
He shook his head in refusal.
He stood stiffly in place and refused to move, waiting for the angry black python to swallow him whole.
The black python flicked its tongue.
In its golden slit pupils, his entire reflection was visible.
The gold looked like molten metal flowing slowly.
There was no warmth.
No emotion.
Only the cold, mechanical scrutiny belonging to an ancient reptile.
He stubbornly held his ground.
Yet no matter how long he waited, the python’s gaping jaws never arrived.
After standing for so long, his legs became sore.
He lifted one to rub it.
Immediately, his waist was wrapped up and he was carried directly into the cave.
The black python’s massive head blocked the entrance, preventing him from leaving.
Wait.
Had its brain evolved too, along with its body?
Jiang Shulan shuffled backward.
His foot landed on something soft.
He looked down.
The cave floor was layered.
The bottom layer was made of animal fur that had been carefully cleaned.
On top of that were broad, clean palm leaves.
And on the very top…
Were some very familiar items.
Weren’t these the clothes he’d changed out of over the past few days?
He’d been too lazy to wash them, so he’d simply thrown them into his room, planning to throw them away after reaching shore.
How had they ended up here?
The black python flicked its tongue again.
The cave wasn’t especially large or small.
There was only one entrance.
Just large enough to accommodate the black python’s head.
Its tongue could reach even the deepest corner.
The black python’s tongue pushed him backward.
He fell onto what could only be described as a nest made of his clothes, lying on his back with all four limbs in the air.
He looked exactly like a kitten that had been flipped onto its back.
Supporting himself on his elbows, he sat up.
The black python’s “gaze” burned into him.
It stared at him so intently that a horrifying thought suddenly sent chills down his spine.
A thought so terrible that he almost wanted to log off on the spot.
No.
No way.
Right?
Pythons hunted using thermal vision.
The body heat emitted by prey appeared in their cold perception as clusters of orange-red light.
It extended its tongue from between slightly parted jaws, vibrating rapidly in the damp air.
Every particle of scent was delivered to the Jacobson’s organ.
The sweet metallic scent of warm blood.
The scent of flesh.
Every piece of information formed a precise map inside its mind.
From the moment it saw its younger brother being intimate with the human, it had lost control.
But it was the older brother.
It had to yield to its younger brother.
The two brothers understood each other instinctively.
When its younger brother told it to rock the boat, it obeyed.
When its younger brother told it to frighten the little human, it obeyed that too.
Watching the little human cry helplessly in its brother’s arms, flushed all over and unable to resist, it realized that it had entered breeding season for the first time.
This entire cave was within its domain.
No matter how the little human crawled, ran, or cried, he could never escape.
This hunt lasted from morning until noon.
By the time the black python reluctantly withdrew its head from the cave, the little human was drenched from head to toe.
Jiang Shulan had been forced to take a bath.

He had to run.
After resting for a long time, he quietly sneaked out of the cave.
There was nothing outside.
Everything was silent.

He turned and ran.
After running for more than ten minutes, he finally stopped, gasping for breath.

The black python had long since coiled itself into a circle, enclosing both him and the cave.
He had run all that time.
And he had never left the black python’s territory.
Jiang Shulan lowered his head.
His body was tired.
His heart was tired.
No.
He couldn’t give up!
He gathered his courage again and began walking around the black python’s body.
He refused to believe there wasn’t some hidden gap he could escape through.
Wait.
What was that?
Jiang Shulan’s eyes lit up.
One section of the black python’s body looked different from the rest.
The scales there were softer.
It seemed as though something hidden beneath them hadn’t emerged.
He touched it with his palm.
It was soft.
And around the edge was a nearly invisible seam.
Could this be an old injury?
To confirm, he considered poking it with a finger.
Then he realized the area was too large.
One finger probably wouldn’t do as much damage as a mosquito bite.
So he twisted his shoulder and threw a hard punch.
The black python’s body suddenly became visibly agitated.
It lashed its tail impatiently against the ground.
The black python was simply too enormous.
Even a casual flick of its tail made the earth shake.
The surrounding trees rustled violently.
Jiang Shulan watched as the circle formed by the black python’s body became tighter.
And tighter.
The scales scraped together with an ear-piercing hiss.
It worked!
Jiang Shulan’s eyes shone.
He began enthusiastically “tormenting” the black python’s “injury.”
He punched it.
He kicked it.
When he became tired, he even rammed it with his head.
Eventually, he exhausted himself.
Yet strangely, even though the black python had become so agitated that it was hissing warnings, it never concealed that spot.
Was he still not doing enough?
Jiang Shulan frowned.
He hooked his fingers into the tiny seam and pulled.
The moment he opened a gap.
Before he could see what was inside…
The black python’s entire body suddenly froze.
It began flicking its tongue frantically.
Hot air burst from its nostrils.
Then…
It actually ran away.
Jiang Shulan planted his hands on his hips and burst into triumphant laughter.
“Who else!”
The system, which knew exactly what that spot had been and feared that telling him would cause Jiang Shulan to die of embarrassment, replied,
