Chapter 38: The Anaconda Disaster – Action Movie Protagonist

The next day, after everyone had rested, filming began.

Danny hoisted the camera onto his shoulder.

Warren held the microphone and spoke smoothly, “Hello, everyone. We are currently deep within the Amazon rainforest, searching for the legendary Xixia Ma Tribe.”

The camera turned toward Jiang Shulan.

Following the cue, Warren asked, “For Shu, is there anything particularly special about the legends surrounding the Xixia Ma Tribe?”

Jiang Shulan took the microphone.

On camera, he looked so pale he practically glowed.

Danny gestured for him to move into the shade.

He obediently did so and dutifully recited his lines.

“Before joining this documentary, I researched a great deal of information. The reason the Xixia Ma Tribe worships giant pythons is because they sought protection from war and human disasters. According to some legends, they would offer members of their tribe as sacrifices to the Python God. The Python God would then transform their souls into giant pythons upon rebirth, allowing them to protect the tribe’s territory from invaders.”

Warren nodded.

“That’s right. Shu’s research is accurate. The place where these sacrifices were performed was the Mystic Lake. And that is also one of the primary destinations of our journey…”

After filming this segment, Terry reviewed the footage.

Once he confirmed there were no major problems, everyone was allowed to take a break.

Jiang Shulan sat cross-legged on a mat woven from palm leaves, playing on his phone.

Suddenly, he felt something cool.

He looked up.

Hyman was staring at him.

Those dark green eyes resembled a predator watching its prey.

However, the place his gaze was fixed on was the hem of Jiang Shulan’s shorts.

Jiang Shulan followed his line of sight downward.

All he saw were his own pale thighs.

He had bought shorts that reached the backs of his knees.

For comfort, he’d even deliberately chosen a loose fit.

There was absolutely nothing provocative about them.

Yet somehow, Hyman was still reacting.

“Pervert!”

Jiang Shulan jumped to his feet.

“You’re the captain! If you aren’t steering the boat properly, why are you staring at me all day?! I’ll have Terry dock your pay!”

Hyman licked one of his canine teeth.

The sting against his tongue finally pulled his thoughts away from that soft, endlessly tempting sight.

He narrowed those green eyes.

“I’m very sorry, good boy.”

Dock his pay?

The entire documentary had been funded by Hyman himself.

Still, there was no need to tell his baby that.

Let him believe there was still something in the world capable of threatening Hyman.

Hyman swept the loose strands of hair from his forehead.

The exposed skin only made him seem more dangerously attractive.

“Please. Please. Whatever you want me to do, I’ll obediently do it.”

“Then stay farther away from me!”

“Really?”

Hyman chose selective hearing.

“Come to your room tonight? Okay. I’ll do my best.”

As though he didn’t sound pitiful enough already, he added, “Can Terry give me a raise, too?”

“Get lost!”

Everyone on the boat couldn’t help laughing.

At this point, if they still couldn’t tell what was going on between the two of them, they’d have to be idiots.

A shout suddenly came from not far away.

“Help! Is anyone there? I need help!”

Danny shouted, “There’s someone over there!”

Terry immediately turned to Mate.

“Quick! Bring the boat over!”

****

“Thank you.”

The rescued man was middle-aged, with a drooping face, shoulder-length dark hair, and weathered bronze skin.

“My name is Salang.”

Everyone immediately began asking how he had ended up here alone.

“I was just out here catching snakes.”

Salang shrugged.

“Who knew I’d run into an accident and get stranded?”

He then asked where everyone else was headed.

Mate eagerly explained the purpose of their expedition.

“The Xixia Ma Tribe?”

Salang nodded in understanding.

“Since you saved me, I should do something to repay you. I wasn’t planning to tell anyone this. But I’ve actually seen the Xixia Ma Tribe with my own eyes.”

“Really?”

Terry looked skeptical.

“Of course. Why would I lie to you? If you don’t want to go see for yourselves, then pretend I never said anything.”

Salang’s mouth drooped downward.

His eyes, however, wandered around the ship.

Then they stopped on Jiang Shulan, who was standing on the second deck.

“Hey. That’s one sweet little darling.”

Suddenly, another extraordinarily handsome face filled Salang’s field of vision.

The owner of that face was standing directly behind the young man.

His tall figure cast a shadow that completely enveloped him.

Familiar.

Yet somehow unfamiliar.

His cold, sharp gaze radiated possessiveness and danger.

Salang immediately sensed trouble.

When Hyman had first arrived, he was always smiling.

At first, few people had been afraid of him.

At most, they feared the power behind him.

But after one fool nearly beat his wife to death in front of Hyman, everything changed.

In front of everyone, Hyman beat the man until he resembled a dead dog.

And that still wasn’t enough.

He brought out a bag full of cash and offered it to the villagers.

Ten thousand dollars for a slap.

Twenty thousand for a punch.

The more serious the injury, the more money they received.

If the man died, Hyman would accept full responsibility.

Someone eventually worked up the courage to slap the man.

Hyman casually tossed over a stack of bills.

The expression on his face was as relaxed as though he had thrown away a scrap of paper.

The man was beaten for three days and three nights.

Hyman kept every promise.

Whenever the cash ran out, he’d send someone to fetch more.

Until eventually, no one could claim the money anymore.

Because the man’s body had already begun to rot.

Even the lightest touch of a finger would sink directly into the putrid flesh.

During that time, the man’s parents had gone to the police.

The police had instead apologized to Hyman.

They said they were sorry he had witnessed something unpleasant and hoped he wouldn’t be upset.

Not once did they mention rescuing the victim.

In the end, the corpse rotted until only bones remained.

It was still there.

No one dared touch it.

After that incident, everyone understood that Hyman was not someone to provoke.

Later, he invested money into building schools.

Women suffering domestic abuse could seek his help.

He would personally handle their cases.

If the abuse was confirmed, the woman and her children would receive enough money to live lavishly for the rest of their lives and relocate to the city.

Salang quickly stopped staring.

He focused on chatting with the others.

The moment he found an opportunity, he pulled Mate behind the cabin.

“Why did you bring him here?”

“I couldn’t help it.”

Mate looked helpless.

“The moment he heard we were searching for the Xixia Ma Tribe, he insisted on coming. If he wants to come, can I stop him?”

He also couldn’t understand why a rich young master would abandon luxury and beautiful women to come searching for some tribe in the rainforest.

“Are you insane?”

Salang cursed.

“If anything happens to him here, do you think we’ll survive? That giant python isn’t worth even a fraction of his daily allowance.”

Mate didn’t seem concerned.

“Haven’t you hunted giant pythons many times already? Protecting one extra person shouldn’t be difficult.”

The three of them had been planning this for a very long time.

At this point, there was no turning back.

Salang could only swallow his complaints.

Forget it.

He’d just be more careful.

In the human world, he had every reason to fear Hyman.

But in the rainforest…

He was the ruler.

Before long, Salang had won everyone’s initial trust through his friendliness, humor, and subtle attentiveness.

Not long after the boat resumed moving, it suddenly stopped.

Salang and Kyle both wanted to go investigate.

They argued about it for quite a while.

Finally, Hyman said, “I’ll go.”

Neither of them objected.

He picked up the diving equipment.

Before he put it on, Salang naturally suggested, “There are a lot of insects in the rainforest. In my experience, we’d better check the breathing apparatus for bugs.”

Hyman tapped the equipment.

Something fell out.

Before anyone could see what it was, Salang crushed it and tossed it aside.

Hyman realized something.

He raised an eyebrow.

Without saying anything further, he jumped directly into the water.

As long as it didn’t affect his time with Jiang Shulan, what did anything else matter to him?

No one knew what the situation beneath the boat looked like.

When Hyman failed to surface for a long time, everyone grew worried.

Jiang Shulan crouched beside the boat and called his name.

Suddenly, his vision blurred.

Water exploded upward and drenched him.

One of Hyman’s hands was braced against the side of the boat.

The other held the back of Jiang Shulan’s head.

His lower body remained submerged.

Water droplets rolled down his Adam’s apple, collarbones, and sternum, tracing the grooves of his abs before disappearing back into the river.

He looked like a merman.

Unfortunately, this particular merman had apparently lost his mind.

He intended to violate the sacred barrier between species by kissing him.

Lips and teeth intertwined.

Genes exchanged.

As though trying to drag him into the water to sink together.

Why was this man acting like a dog in heat every single day?

Was he sick?

Jiang Shulan kicked Hyman back into the river.

After wiping the water from his face, he exploded in anger.

“You’re not allowed back on the boat!”

What could Hyman do?

His wife had given him an order.

So he sank obediently back into the river.

At first, nobody thought much of it.

Until more than ten minutes passed and Hyman still showed no intention of returning.

Danny joked, “Brother, if you stay down there any longer, I’m worried I won’t see you tomorrow morning.”

Kevin also tried persuading him.

“Bro, Shu’s probably not angry anymore. Come back.”

Hyman ignored every word.

“I know what I’m doing. I’m just teasing him. Keep moving.”

Unable to convince him, Mate resumed his duties as captain and reduced the speed to the minimum.

After all, Hyman had bought the boat.

That technically made him the captain.

Perfectly logical.

As far as Jiang Shulan was concerned, however, the matter wasn’t over.

He climbed onto the second deck and watched Hyman chasing after the boat.

Hyman watched him stomp downstairs.

Then stomp back upstairs.

A moment later, Jiang Shulan actually cast out an apple with a fishing rod.

He was fishing.

Fishing for a willing catch.

Since Hyman couldn’t understand Chinese, Jiang Shulan had the system turn off the translator.

“Here, fishy fishy fishy-”

Hyman called out loudly, “If that were your pants hanging there, I might be able to catch up right now. But since it’s yours, I’m going to take it. And kiss the apple too.”

A wicked idea occurred to Jiang Shulan.

“Then get ready. I’ll say when to start.”

He had just asked Mate how to increase the boat’s speed.

Placing a hand on the controls, Jiang Shulan let out a villainous “Heh-heh-heh” laugh.

The moment the speed increased, he ran onto the deck and waved at Hyman.

“Ready? Go!”

Hyman waved back.

“Okay, wife!”

And so Jiang Shulan watched, with his own eyes, as Hyman closed the distance at an utterly absurd speed.

Was Hyman really that good at swimming?

The figure moving through the water…

Looked exactly like a python.

Not long afterward, Hyman climbed aboard and accepted the apple from Jiang Shulan’s dejected hands.

He wasn’t human at all.

Jiang Shulan had completely miscalculated.

Suddenly, gunshots rang out from the forest.

Salang emerged from the trees with Denise and Gary.

They were dragging a wild boar behind them.

Only after Terry questioned them did everyone learn the truth.

After watching Jiang Shulan and Hyman kiss earlier, the two of them had gotten worked up and gone into the forest to do something naughty.

Jiang Shulan’s ears turned red.

Why did that make it sound like he was the protagonist of some adult action movie?

Obviously, Hyman was the one constantly…

Salang, however, wasn’t surprised.

“It’s breeding season in the rainforest. The animals are all a bit restless. The instinct for survival drives them into a frenzy of genetic propagation. So it’s perfectly normal for those two to be affected. Especially giant pythons. Snakes are naturally very lustful. That’s why we deliberately chose this time of year.”
