Chapter 15: Deadly Bend 7 – Finally Time to Eat

“You!” The chief shot to his feet in fury.

As the leader of the tribe, he was required to be the strongest among them.

When the man rose, clad in animal hides, Jiang Shulan felt as though a bear had suddenly stood up in front of him.

One slap from that hand would probably leave someone half-dead.

Jiang Shulan swallowed nervously.

He was a little scared.

“Shulan.” Amy grabbed his arm and shook her head, eyes red. “Thank you. It’s enough.”

They were trapped here, unarmed. Whether they would survive at all remained uncertain.

The only thing that reassured her was that Vincent seemed to be on the tribe’s side.

At the very least, Jiang Shulan’s life wasn’t in danger.

Amy didn’t want to drag him down with them.

But Jiang Shulan remained firm.

“If you’re going to kill people simply because you outnumber them, then stop pretending you’re standing on some moral high ground while trying to destroy their character!”

“Jiang!”

For the first time, Adam found this Asian guy incredibly likable.

He wiped his eyes hard.

“Thank you!”

The hunter whose brother had been killed stepped forward.

‘One step at a time.’

“Then what about my brother?”

Guilt filled Jiang Shulan’s heart.

He couldn’t meet the man’s gaze.

“I’m sorry. About your brother, I…”

He hadn’t participated in it.

He hadn’t even witnessed the death of the hunter named Muir.

But Adam really had killed someone.

“Hahahaha!”

Suddenly Adam burst into loud laughter.

“That’s right! I killed him!”

He roared at every hunter present.

“I don’t believe that log was an accident! You people killed Zhilin! You’re the reason she died!” I don’t care whether you’re innocent or not! I don’t care anymore!”

The moment Zhilin died, Adam had already lost the will to live.

“If you’ve got the guts, kill me! But my friends didn’t do anything wrong! Kill me and let them go!”

Shhk-

At some point, William had appeared behind Adam.

He casually wiped a knife against Adam’s clothing and spoke with a faint smile.

“Don’t panic. Take a deep breath. The dizziness is normal. You’ll fall asleep soon.”

Adam instinctively clutched his neck.

Only then did he realize a cut had opened across his throat.

Warm blood poured out.

It soaked his shirt and splattered onto the ground.

A few seconds later, Adam collapsed.

He never moved again.

Silence engulfed the entire hall.

No one had expected William to strike so quickly.

Or so ruthlessly.

“All right.”

William smiled.

“The problem has been solved.”

Under the dim torchlight, his flawless face, beautiful enough to resemble an elf, suddenly took on an eerie, inhuman quality.

The surrounding hunters unconsciously stepped back.

Under their frightened gazes, William slowly walked toward the chief.

“The trial should be over now, shouldn’t it?”

“Amy and Darius are innocent. But as punishment for lying, they’ll remain in our tribe permanently. Correct?”

He was smiling.

Not a drop of blood stained him.

Yet the chief was trembling so badly he could barely stand.

It felt less like facing a beautiful young man and more like facing a monster that had crawled out of a mountain of corpses.

The chief barely dared breathe.

Terrified that William might casually slit his throat, he nodded frantically.

“Of course. Of course.”

How could he have forgotten?

William and Vincent were the tribe’s madmen.

He had once fancied Amy and even imagined spending his life with her.

Now he abandoned the idea entirely.

Who knew whether that Asian boy might whisper something into William’s ear one day and get him killed?

At that point, he might not even know how he died.

William glanced around.

The hunters still hadn’t moved.

He let out a simple questioning hum.

“Hm?”

“Move! Hurry! Do as William says!”

The hunters jolted awake.

They rushed forward, untied Darius, and practically fled the hall.

Amy and Darius had survived.

The two embraced and cried quietly together.

William twirled the knife between his fingers.

He was just about to happily seek praise from Jiang Shulan when he saw Jiang Shulan leap onto Vincent’s back.

Arms wrapped tightly around Vincent’s neck, Jiang Shulan stared at William warily.

“Hurry and take me away! Vincent, I promise I’ll never call you names again! Just hurry!”

Vincent and William exchanged a glance.

Both saw the same intention reflected in the other’s eyes.

They weren’t willing to wait until tomorrow anymore.

Everything had already been prepared.

William gave Vincent a subtle signal.

Vincent nodded.

Jiang Shulan had no idea what they were communicating.

All he knew was that William was getting closer.

Panicked, he planted several hurried kisses on Vincent’s face.

“Hurry!”

“All right.”

Vincent hooked his arms beneath Jiang Shulan’s knees and carried him out of the hall.

“We’ll go farther away?”

“Mm!”

Vincent ran with him for a long time before finally stopping beside a creek.

He set Jiang Shulan down on a large flat rock.

The stone sat about half a meter above the ground.

Wide and smooth.

Almost like a bed.

Perfect for lying on.

As Jiang Shulan stretched out, he could see the stars overhead.

The steady chorus of insects filled the night.

A floral breeze drifted past.

It was beautiful.

He closed his eyes and enjoyed the rare moment of peace.

“Baby.”

Vincent lay down beside him.

His voice was low and hoarse.

His breathing sounded uneven.

Warm breaths brushed against Jiang Shulan’s neck.

Ticklish.

Had carrying him exhausted Vincent?

“I’m thirsty.”

“Thirsty?”

Jiang Shulan pointed toward the creek.

“There’s water right there.”

“Go drink.”

“I want something else.”

“What?”

What else was there besides water?

Jiang Shulan soon found out.

The stone had absorbed the sun’s heat during the day.

Now, under the cool night sky, it felt pleasantly warm.

He couldn’t even remember what month it was.

He should have felt cold after removing so many layers.

Instead, his entire body felt hot.

Thankfully there were no mosquitoes.

Otherwise he’d probably wake up covered in bites.

The stars overhead seemed to sway.

Up and down.

Left and right.

Back and forth.

Faster and faster.

Until they blurred into streaks like a meteor shower.

Everything spun.

His head felt light.

His stomach churned.

In his haze, he suddenly remembered William’s strange words when they first met about wanting to be beside the creek.

Back then he hadn’t understood.

Now William had apparently demonstrated exactly what he meant.

The last thing Jiang Shulan remembered was feeling as though tiny fish were nipping at him beneath the water.

His legs kicked once.

Then he passed out.

When he opened his eyes again, Amy informed him that he had slept for an entire day and night.

With trembling fingers, Jiang Shulan raised a middle finger.

“Holy crap!”

Men were liars.

And Vincent and William?

Their words were even less trustworthy.

Amy and Darius eventually became one of the tribe’s married couples.

Freed from endless work and pressure, their relationship only grew stronger.

Darius, who had spent most of his life suffering discrimination because of his skin color, openly declared that he wanted to live there forever.

Their biggest problem now was Jiang Shulan, who visited three times a day.

And Vincent and William, who followed him everywhere.

“Amy!”

Around four or five in the afternoon, Jiang Shulan arrived again.

He was bundled up in a sweater, scarf, long sleeves, and long pants.

Wrapped so tightly that almost no skin was visible.

His voice was hoarse again.

The few exposed fingers showed scattered marks that looked highly suspicious.

Apparently he had suffered another sleepless night.

Amy expertly poured him a cup of honey water.

Jiang Shulan collapsed onto their handmade sofa.

Listless and exhausted.

“I want to sleep.”

‘These two monsters!’

Why could they take turns while he never got to rest?

The more he thought about it, the sadder he became.

His lips quivered.

He was about to start crying.

“Amy.”

Someone knocked politely.

Without waiting for permission, he entered.

“Baby.”

Jiang Shulan immediately swallowed his tears.

He no longer dared cry at Amy’s house.

Those two lunatics would assume he hadn’t cried enough and drag him home for more misery.

“Vincent.”

Amy crossed her arms and spoke sternly.

“As his brother, you need to control William better. Look what he’s done to Shulan.”

“I’m sorry.”

Vincent apologized smoothly.

“This time I’ve already restricted his schedule. And I taught him ways to make Shulan more comfortable.”

Amy nodded in satisfaction.

Jiang Shulan felt even worse.

Because Vincent was the truly terrible one.

Vincent was a genius.

Anything that interested him, he mastered quickly.

William was manageable.

If Jiang Shulan cried hard enough, William would at least pause to comfort him.

Vincent, on the other hand, was hopeless.

He had somehow become obsessed with a concept he called “tolerance thresholds.”

No matter how Jiang Shulan cried, protested, or begged, Vincent remained unmoved.

He insisted he was helping Jiang Shulan “improve.”

The man was inhuman.

The more Jiang Shulan thought about it, the more aggrieved he felt.

The angrier he became.

And the sleepier.

“Shh.”

Vincent signaled Amy to lower her voice.

Jiang Shulan had already fallen asleep.

Curled into a tiny ball like a glutinous rice dumpling.

His cheeks were pink.

‘Adorable.’

The brothers had indeed gone too far recently.

Jiang Shulan was so sleep-deprived that he could fall asleep instantly anywhere.

Vincent carefully gathered him into his arms.

With his height and build, he could hold Jiang Shulan completely against his chest.

Like an adult carrying a child.

As Amy stepped aside, she accidentally bumped a cup.

The small noise made Jiang Shulan frown in his sleep.

He was about to wake up.

Vincent gently patted his back and kissed his forehead.

Jiang Shulan instinctively snuggled closer.

His face pressed against Vincent’s chest.

Moments later, he fell back into deep sleep.

“They left?”

Darius emerged from the back room.

“Yes.”

Amy nodded.

“Are you really going back?”

“Of course.”

Her answer came without hesitation.

“My parents are still waiting for me.”

Darius took her hand.

“Then I’ll go with you.”

“But you’re happy here.”

He smiled.

“But if you’re not with me, I won’t be happy anywhere.”

Amy returned the smile.

“Then we’ll leave the day after tomorrow. So soon? Will the chief allow it?”

“William has already informed him. And the chief agreed.”
