Join the ServerWhen Jiang Shulan returned to the rest station, he felt as if a lifetime had passed.
He had truly spent decades in the previous movie world…
Faced with the twins’ endless demands, he had gone from completely overwhelmed at first to gradually becoming… proficient. As for everything he suffered in between, he simply couldn’t bring himself to talk about it.
All he could say was that he had exhausted every bit of strength and every trick he had.
Seeing that Jiang Shulan remained silent, the system felt a little guilty.
[I promise, the next movie will be easy. The BOSS kills people with traps. As long as you die to one of the BOSS’s mechanisms, that’s enough.]
[Waaah…] Jiang Shulan barely managed to cheer up at the good news. [Thank you, System. What would I ever do without you?]
[Mm. I’ve already recovered Zhilin’s data stream. Do you still want to see her?]
[Yes!]
A glowing little ball suddenly bounced into the room from nowhere.
[Hello, I’m Zhilin.]
Jiang Shulan crouched down and spoke softly.
[Hello, Zhilin.]
[Zhilin’s level is too low, so I can only place her inside an energy protector.]
As soon as the system finished speaking, a table piled high with cakes and cola appeared in the rest station.
Jiang Shulan carefully picked Zhilin up and placed her on a chair. The chair automatically rose to a suitable height.
[Thank you, Jiang Shulan.] Zhilin’s voice was mechanical and ordinary. [If it weren’t for you, I would have been trapped reliving my death over and over again.]
[Me?] Jiang Shulan blinked.
Zhilin patiently explained.
[Yes. Data streams like us don’t really have rest periods or protection mechanisms. We simply repeat our deaths endlessly. Eventually, the accumulated emotions become too much and we break down. If not for your system, I would’ve already been reset and started over.]
[I’m glad I could help.]
Jiang Shulan pushed a slice of cake toward her and thoughtfully cut it into smaller pieces.
[What about Adam?]
[The same.]
A faint pink hue appeared on Zhilin’s glowing surface.
[Actually, in the original storyline, when the log came rolling down, Adam was supposed to let go of me and run. But he refused to. So I had to push him away.]
[Because of what you did, Adam received the same treatment I did. He’s resting inside an energy protector too.]
Jiang Shulan immediately caught on to the implication. A sweet smile spread across his face, his blue eyes curving into crescents.
[Then I wish the two of you happiness.]
[Thank you.]
Jiang Shulan chatted with Zhilin for a long time in the rest station.
After she left, he cupped his face in his hands. His voice turned soft and sticky with affection as he smiled sweetly. His blue eyes were filled with clear trust and dependence.
[System~ I like you the most!]
[Mm.]
The system accepted the declaration calmly.
After all, it really had done many things for Jiang Shulan that it never would have done before.
Its core processor was beginning to overheat.
It also…
It also what?
It also lo—
Those words were forbidden.
The system immediately kicked Jiang Shulan into the next world.
It was a legendary system with the highest completion rate in system history, a being existing countless dimensions above humanity. How could it possibly be charmed by an ordinary little human?
Jiang Shulan was merely a little cute and a little good at acting spoiled. How could it possibly—
Jiang Shulan opened his eyes in confusion.
[System, what’s wrong with you?]
He hadn’t done anything to make the system angry. Why had it suddenly thrown him into a new movie world?
[Player has successfully entered the movie “Night Demon.”
Role: A subordinate of a crime BOSS. Assigned to monitor the protagonist while accompanying him to steal a red diamond from Michael Chase’s residence.
Relationship: Philip – boyfriend.
Mission: Be killed by the BOSS.]
“Jiang! Didn’t you hear me? The BOSS wants to see you!”
One of the other henchmen slapped him on the shoulder.
Jiang Shulan turned to look at him.
“Okay. Thanks.”
The man stared after him.
“Strange… Were Jiang’s eyes always this pretty?”
Even his voice sounded nice.
Jiang Shulan glanced at his reflection in the bar mirror.
A black hoodie, probably one size too large, hung loosely from his shoulders, exposing part of his collarbone. Black joggers. Combat boots with carelessly tied laces. A black mask covered most of his face.
It was a style he’d never tried before.
‘Kinda cool…’
Like one of those hidden martial arts masters who looked ordinary but was secretly unbeatable.
Jiang Shulan’s eyes sparkled.
‘So handsome!’
But why did he have a boyfriend again???
“He’s my guy.”
The crime BOSS ignored Jiang Shulan approaching from behind and negotiated directly with A-Jin.
“He’ll go with you to steal the diamond. That’s my condition for a fifty-fifty split.”
“Are you insane?” A-Jin snapped. “You want me to bring someone else? What if he gets caught? Am I supposed to rescue him too?”
“Then the deal is off.”
A-Jin swallowed his frustration.
“Fine.”
He turned and left first.
The BOSS kept Jiang Shulan behind.
“If A-Jin gets the diamond, find an opportunity to take it from him. Understand?”
Jiang Shulan stood ramrod straight and nodded seriously.
“Yes, BOSS!”
Leave it to him!
Outside, A-Jin was already waiting.
He had short dark-brown hair and a lean, practical build, not the exaggerated muscles of a gym addict, but the kind of strength that came from real-world experience.
“Hey, brother.”
He lowered his voice.
“I’ve got a wife and daughter at home. They need this money.”
He leaned closer.
“What did the BOSS tell you? Tell me, and I’ll give you ten thousand from the diamond money.”
“The BOSS told me to steal your diamond!” Jiang Shulan declared righteously. “But I won’t do it. And I don’t need your money!”
A-Jin fell silent.
Apparently stunned by his honesty.
Jiang Shulan became even more pleased with himself. He lifted his chin higher, trying to look even cooler.
[Jiang Shulan, you’re just a street thug.]
[You said there weren’t any roleplay restrictions.]
He sounded aggrieved but straightened his back even further.
[And I’m dressed this cool, so I should do cool things!]
[…Mm. Very cool.]
The system decided not to argue.
Once Jiang Shulan met the BOSS, he wouldn’t feel that way anymore.
“Come on. It’s almost time.”
A-Jin dropped the subject.
****
A dark and windy night.
Perfect weather for burglary.
A-Jin led Jiang Shulan carefully toward the client’s house.
Although the owners had already left on vacation, they still needed to be cautious. The red diamond was worth a fortune. If the theft was discovered, the police would come in force.
Using his tools, A-Jin quietly broke in.
Jiang Shulan tiptoed behind him.
The house was so silent he could hear his own heartbeat.
He was strangely excited.
[System, don’t I look like a super cool secret agent?]
[You do.]
If it didn’t encourage him now, Jiang Shulan would probably start sulking again back at the rest station.
The system quietly turned his pain suppression all the way up.
This movie shouldn’t last long.
One wrong step would be enough to get him killed, and Jiang Shulan was notoriously careless.
“This staircase is old. It’ll creak. Walk carefully.”
Jiang Shulan followed A-Jin’s instructions perfectly, not wanting to slow him down.
A-Jin climbed the stairs and stopped before a mirror. He carefully pushed it upward, revealing a hidden safe.
The first lock clicked open.
Too smoothly.
A-Jin couldn’t help feeling hopeful.
Once he sold the diamond, he could pay off the debt. His sister-in-law and niece wouldn’t have to hide anymore.
His brother had died after borrowing huge sums from loan sharks. To protect his family, A-Jin had married his brother’s widow and taken responsibility for the debt himself.
Just as he reached for the second lock, a faint sound came from downstairs.
Someone was unlocking the front door.
Then footsteps entered the house.
Light footsteps.
Approaching the second floor.
The stairs creaked.
A-Jin immediately packed away his tools, lowered the mirror, grabbed Jiang Shulan’s hand, and pulled him into hiding.
The entire sequence took less than a minute.
He was certain the homeowners had boarded their flight that afternoon.
So who had returned?
Thinking quickly, he turned to ask Jiang Shulan whether he knew anything.
Instead, he found himself staring directly into a pair of blue eyes.
He’d wanted to ask this since they left the bar.
Had the crime BOSS really started recruiting minors?
Jiang Shulan looked small. His every movement carried an innocent, youthful quality. The mask covered almost his entire face, leaving only those bright blue eyes visible.
Eyes that made people instinctively soften.
“Shh.”
A-Jin raised a finger.
Jiang Shulan immediately copied him.
Obedient and adorable.
Despite the tension, a smile slowly appeared in A-Jin’s eyes.
Once they were sure the intruder had moved on, A-Jin kept hold of Jiang Shulan’s hand and led him downstairs.
They would have to abandon the job tonight.
Then…
A horrifying scream exploded through the house.
A-Jin instantly realized something was terribly wrong.
He rushed toward the front door, intending to escape.
Four new locks had somehow appeared.
At the same time, footsteps sounded upstairs.
The person was coming down.
To avoid the noisy floorboards, A-Jin simply swept Jiang Shulan into his arms and hurried to the second floor.
‘So light. So soft.’
The thought crossed his mind at the worst possible moment.
A dark figure suddenly appeared ahead.
“You! It’s you!”
The homeowner, who was supposed to be vacationing overseas, stood there covered in injuries.
“Why are you doing this?!”
A-Jin opened his mouth to explain.
The homeowner charged at them with a golf club.
Halfway there, he seemed to trip over something.
The sound of chains rattled through the room.
The next second, a massive hook tore into his back, lifting him toward the ceiling before slamming him violently back down.
A-Jin didn’t hesitate.
He threw open a guest-room door and dragged Jiang Shulan inside.
About a minute later, the sound of something heavy being dragged echoed from the hallway outside.
