Join the ServerThe Engineer sat up inside the cryo-pod.
He was extraordinarily tall, with skin so pale it seemed almost luminous and flawless. His physique was powerfully built, his features sculpted like a statue, and his nearly black eyes were cold and distant.
Jiang Shulan looked at him while quietly touching his own arm.
Soft.
He secretly lowered his hand and pretended nothing had happened.
The Engineer swept his gaze across the group.
“Who are you?”
“We?” Jiang Shulan answered instinctively. “We’re your creations!”
Ever since arriving here, Shaw and Holloway had been constantly talking about “Engineers,” “creators,” and “the creators of humanity.” He had almost been brainwashed by them.
The moment the words left his mouth, he realized everyone was staring at him in shock.
He scratched his cheek.
“What?”
Weyland frowned.
“How do you know their language?”
Jiang Shulan looked completely confused.
“Isn’t he speaking English?”
“No.” David shook his head. “Little Master, he’s speaking the Engineer language. And you’re speaking the Engineer language too. It isn’t English at all.”
Even stranger, when Jiang Shulan turned to speak with them, he switched seamlessly into English.
Weyland coughed lightly and steadied his breathing.
“I never realized you had such a talent for languages.”
[The translator can do that too?]
[Of course. You speak whatever language the person you’re talking to speaks.]
Jiang Shulan accepted the praise without the slightest guilt.
He lifted his chin proudly like a little cat that had stolen a fish, the tip of his invisible tail practically pointing toward the sky.
“I only learned a little. I didn’t expect it to come in handy.”
David immediately chimed in.
“Little Master is amazing. I spent years reading books before I learned a little of it. I never imagined Little Master could already use it so fluently.”
Jiang Shulan planted his hands on his hips, thoroughly flattered.
“Of course! I’ll handle all the conversations with the Engineer from now on!”
He straightened his small face seriously, imagining the dignified posture of a diplomat, and reached out his hand.
“Hello!”
He hadn’t quite captured the solemn aura of a diplomat, but the imitation was undeniably adorable.
The Engineer lowered his gaze to him.
“What are you doing?”
A little cat barely reaching his waist wanted to shake hands with him?
Wasn’t he afraid his hand might be crushed?
But Jiang Shulan kept holding out his hand with unwavering determination.
The Engineer had no choice.
Carefully controlling his strength, he reached out and gently took Jiang Shulan’s hand, completely enveloping it in his own.
Still immersed in his role as a diplomat, Jiang Shulan said seriously,
“Aren’t you supposed to say hello back?”
“…Hello.”
Protocol confirmed.
Jiang Shulan’s eyes lit up.
The Engineer withdrew his hand, unconsciously curling his fingers together.
So soft.
So small.
“Sir.”
David stepped forward, positioning himself between the Engineer and Jiang Shulan.
“I believe my master has many questions for you.”
The Engineer remained silent and gestured for him to continue.
Weyland stepped forward and met the Engineer’s gaze.
“David, tell him we’ve come, just as he asked. Ask him where he came from. Ask him why he created humanity. Ask him where he intends to go…”
Seeing humanity’s creator with their own eyes, everyone had countless questions.
Weyland frowned impatiently.
“This expedition was entirely funded by me. If anyone asks questions, I should be first.”
He snapped,
“Tell them all to be quiet.”
The security personnel immediately moved to silence Shaw and Holloway, who were shouting the loudest.
Jiang Shulan stopped them.
“Wait.”
He looked around calmly.
“Everyone stop talking. Let me do this. Ask one at a time.”
He pulled out a small notebook.
“When one person finishes, the next person asks. After Dr. Shaw, Holloway can ask. Is that okay?”
“And the Engineer is right here. He’s not going to run away. There’s no need to rush.”
The room gradually fell silent.
As the first designated questioner, Weyland looked at Jiang Shulan with obvious satisfaction.
“Little Treasure, you’ve always been good at communicating.”
After all, no one could bring themselves to be harsh toward that beautiful little face.
Even the newly awakened Engineer was no exception.
The Engineer looked at Weyland.
From the moment he awoke, this human had been trying to display his authority within the group.
Arrogant. Rude. Crude. Vain.
The very qualities he despised most.
Had his people paid such a terrible price only to create creatures like this?
It seemed the little cat was an exception.
He didn’t belong on Earth.
He should be taken back to the Engineers’ world.
With that thought, impatience surfaced in the Engineer’s eyes.
“What is it that you seek?”
David translated,
“Master wishes to obtain eternal life.”
“No, he doesn’t.”
Jiang Shulan immediately raised his hand in objection.
“Father only wants to live a little longer. He doesn’t want eternal life.”
“Eternal life…”
The Engineer repeated the words quietly, his voice carrying a trace of cold fury.
The little cat had surely been deceived.
A greedy, arrogant human like this could never have come all this way simply to extend his lifespan.
“I created the being standing before you.”
Weyland pointed at David.
“He is perfect. We are creators as well. We are gods. And gods do not die.”
Declaring oneself equal to one’s own creator felt rather presumptuous.
Jiang Shulan thought for a few seconds.
“Father says that creating David allowed him to understand the hardships and dedication of creators.”
He secretly kicked David’s leg to stop him from speaking. He was the diplomat here.
“Father says that the more he understands your people, the more he appreciates your efforts. That’s why he wants to live longer, so he can spend more time with you.”
David hesitated.
“Little Master…”
The Engineer clearly didn’t believe a single word of that.
Weyland’s overwhelming arrogance and ambition were written into every aspect of his demeanor.
Anyone with eyes could see that his motives were far from pure.
Then, unexpectedly, Jiang Shulan clasped his hands together in prayer.
“Please…”
His blue eyes were full of earnest pleading.
“Do you have any way to extend a person’s life?”
That was dangerously unfair.
David pressed a hand against his chest, confirming that the artificial mechanism simulating a heartbeat remained perfectly steady.
“Your lifespan was set by us.”
The Engineer’s tone softened slightly whenever he looked at Jiang Shulan.
“For your species, that is the most appropriate ending.”
Jiang Shulan turned to Weyland.
“Father, the Engineer says there isn’t a way.”
Weyland sighed quietly.
“Perhaps seeing humanity’s creator with my own eyes is already a fitting conclusion to my journey.”
After that, Jiang Shulan conveyed all of Shaw’s and the others’ questions.
The Engineer grew increasingly impatient.
Finally, Jiang Shulan asked Shaw’s last question.
“What is the black liquid for? Where were you taking it?”
When they found Milburn and Fifield, the surrounding area had been covered in the black substance.
They had taken a sample back for analysis and discovered an unknown life form within it that was extremely aggressive toward human cells.
The Engineer fell silent.
If he told the truth, would the little cat come to hate him?
After all, he had intended to destroy his creations.
So he lied.
“I don’t know.”
With the questioning finally over, Jiang Shulan let out a long breath.
“I’m hungry. Let’s go back.”
“Back?”
“Yes!”
Jiang Shulan smiled brightly.
“You’ve been asleep for so long. You must be hungry. Come try human food with us.”
Thankfully, this Engineer had a good temper.
If Jiang Shulan had been surrounded immediately after waking up and forced to answer so many questions, he would have gotten angry long ago.
At least half the credit belonged to him, the diplomat.
For the first time, Jiang Shulan felt genuinely proud of himself.
The Engineer found himself agreeing almost without thinking.
“All right.”
Once he fulfilled the little cat’s wish, he would take him away.
Otherwise, the little cat would probably be sad.
And so, everyone followed behind the Engineer.
The Engineer, meanwhile, followed behind Jiang Shulan.
In this rather strange procession, they returned to the Prometheus.
Even though Vickers had already seen everything through the live video feed, she was still visibly surprised when she came to the entrance to greet them.
Was her little brother’s charm truly powerful enough to affect even non-human beings?
Vickers, who had already rejected countless marriage proposals for Jiang Shulan both openly and discreetly, fell into deep thought.
“Big Sister?”
Jiang Shulan ran over to her and clung to her arm with practiced ease.
“We missed you.”
“You were only gone for half a day.”
“I still missed you.”
