Chapter 6: Deadly Bend 7 – Breakup at the Start

[System! I feel like I’m kind of… dying…]

[Me too.]

The system flipped through the previous world’s death record and genuinely couldn’t hold it together.

Which NPC player dies in a way where they end up being “played with” by the final BOSS for their entire life, then in old age accidentally falls and hurts themselves so badly they start crying every day and lose the will to live, only to be killed afterward by the BOSS?

And even the BOSS eventually took poison and died.

What kind of ending was that???

Even as a higher-dimensional system, it couldn’t find any logical structure that made sense of this ending.

[System, this really isn’t my fault. I already tried my best…]

Jiang Shulan lay sprawled on the bed in the rest station, rolling around lazily.

His loose white sleep pants slid up slightly, revealing slender, flawless calves. His voice stretched long and soft, sweet in a way that made it hard to stay rational.

His black hair spread across the pillow like ink blooming into a black rose. In the center of it, his face was pale and delicate, and when those blue eyes turned misty, even a cold, mechanical system struggled to refuse him anything.

[Mm. Not your fault.]

After saying that, the system went silent for a few seconds.

It had clearly been influenced again.

But since the “final BOSS boyfriend” identity had already been locked in and couldn’t be changed, the system decided: next world, it would assign a cold, ruthless, strictly rule-following boss.

No emotion. No deviation. No chaos.

It refused to believe anything worse could happen.

[System, in the next world, can I-]

[No!]

With that, the system kicked Jiang Shulan straight into the next world.

****

[Player has entered “Wrong Turn 7”.

Role: Amy’s cousin.

Mission: travel to West Virginia for hiking with the group.

Relationship: boyfriend – Vincent.

Objective: get killed by the boss.]

Jiang Shulan made a heart gesture.

[Thanks, System! You’re so thoughtful!]

It even highlighted the relationship this time, perfect. No way he’d confuse the target now.

[Wait, why do I have a boyfriend again?!]

****

On a remote road in West Virginia, the group stood by a broken-down car.

“Darius, can you two tone it down a bit?” Adam said, lowering the hand he had been using to pump air into the tire.

“Can you come help for a second, guys? At this rate we won’t even reach the town before dark.”

Darius and Amy were clearly more focused on each other than anything else.

Jiang Shulan stepped out of the car.

Small, quiet, and delicate-looking, aside from being good-looking and soft-spoken, what use could he possibly have?

If it weren’t for the fact that Amy said he was dating a rich, powerful boyfriend, Adam wouldn’t have agreed to bring him along at all.

“Never mind, you should stay in the car,” Adam said, forcing down his irritation. “Vincent gets motion sickness, right? Stay with him.”

Jiang Shulan awkwardly tugged at his pants. He didn’t want to be alone with Vincent.

“I’m just… a bit stuffy in the car,” he said dryly.

“Darius.”

Amy pushed Darius toward the tire, then turned to Jiang Shulan. “Let’s check the map and see which way we go next.”

It was clearly just an excuse.

The two got into the car.

Jiang Shulan deliberately avoided sitting with Vincent.

He sat in the front passenger seat with Amy, refusing to even glance at the back seat.

He didn’t want another boyfriend.

More importantly, this one didn’t even have a “BOSS marker.” He wasn’t the target. So he would eventually die anyway at the hands of the real BOSS.

If that was the case, it was better to break up early and avoid emotional attachment.

“Thanks, Amy,” he said, forcing small talk. “You and Darius seem really close.”

Amy smiled, but her attention drifted to the rearview mirror.

Vincent met her gaze.

For some reason, a chill ran down her spine.

That wasn’t right.

Vincent’s appearance was the definition of refined beauty, sharp nose bridge, clean jawline, thin lips slightly curved into a polite smile.

Warm gray sweater, gold-rimmed glasses, neatly styled hair.

The perfect “gentleman” image.

The kind of person everyone naturally assumed was harmless.

And yet…

No one had ever suggested he get out of the car earlier.

As if, on a subconscious level, everyone accepted that Vincent stood above them.

Amy blinked, shaken by her own thought.

Vincent adjusted his glasses.

The reflection on the lenses hid the faint coldness in his eyes.

“Shulan,” he said gently, pronouncing the name perfectly. “Did I make you unhappy?”

Amy immediately tried to mediate. “He just… likes you too much, he just doesn’t know how to act around you.”

“Likes me too much?”

Vincent closed the book in his hand.

“He told me before getting out of the car that he wanted to break up.”

“That’s impossible,” Amy said quickly. “He’s been thinking about you for a long time. His whole room is full of your photos-”

She stopped abruptly.

That sounded worse than intended.

“It’s just a phase,” she added hurriedly. “He probably just thinks you’ve been a bit distant lately.”

“I haven’t been distant,” Vincent said softly.

“I just really want to break up,” Jiang Shulan said at the same time.

Amy froze.

Vincent’s expression dimmed slightly.

For a moment, something almost like disappointment passed through his face.

The car was fixed, and the rest of the group squeezed in.

Naturally, Jiang Shulan was placed next to Vincent.

He immediately felt Vincent’s gaze lock onto him like a nail.

He lowered his head, curling inward, staring at the floor as if he could stare a hole through it.

Behind him, Vincent leaned slightly closer, but said nothing.
