Chapter 126: Side Story Part 1 Episode 2 – Home Sweet Home

“Now that Eun-han is attending daycare, all that’s left is dropping him off, picking him up, and taking care of him in the evenings, and that’s something we can help with as much as needed.

So how about you start slowly looking for something you want to do now.

I’m not rushing you, of course.

Only if you want to.”

“I want to, Father.

I do want to work… honestly, I’ve wanted to.”

The words slipped out as if by magic.

Han-geon himself flinched in surprise at how easily they came out.

Did I really want to work this badly?

But once he had shaped the thought into words, Han-geon realized belatedly that the desire inside him had been far stronger than he had thought.

Listening to Han-geon’s earnest voice, his father smiled gently.

“I see.

If you do, will you go back to working as a bodyguard like before?”

“I’d really prefer it if you didn’t go back to bodyguard work, Han-geon.

How about being a taekwondo instructor again, like the last job you had?

There’s less risk of getting hurt, and it seems like a better option.”

“Uh… I’ll think about that for now, Mom, Dad.

Anyway… thank you so much.”

“Thank us for what.

This much, we can do anytime.”

Eun-gyeol’s father also patted Han-geon’s shoulder with affection.

“Watching Eun-gyeol be the only one working all this time… I’ve felt really sorry toward you, and it weighed on my heart.

So don’t worry anymore and do what you want to do, Han-geon.

I’ll keep taking good care of Eun-han, just like I have been.”

“Thank you, Uncle.”

Han-geon smiled, his heart feeling lighter than it had in a long time.

The thought of being able to work again made his chest swell just imagining it.

If he did work again, what would be best?

Han-geon had been quietly thinking about this for a long time now.

Among all the jobs he had done, being a bodyguard was the one he was most experienced and familiar with.

But just as his mother said, being a taekwondo instructor wasn’t a bad option either.

The kids were cute, and the risk of injury was much lower.

If he worked hard and saved up, maybe he could even open his own dojang someday.

When he weighed all his options, being a taekwondo instructor seemed like a fairly good choice.

So he should have been able to set his mind in that direction and slowly plan things out.

And yet, Han-geon found himself hesitating, unable to make a decision.

…No, maybe he knew why.

Eun-gyeol’s face kept flickering before his eyes.

In truth, Eun-gyeol was the kind of person who would support him wholeheartedly rather than block his path.

No matter what choice he made, Eun-gyeol would never stop him.

So why was his heart trying to veer elsewhere, away from the clear options in front of him?

Why did his thoughts keep drifting toward a different path he had already walked once before?

For now… he didn’t know.

Maybe he should think about it a little more and talk it over with Eun-gyeol too.

That was what he decided as he slowly finished his bowl of rice.

Just then, a series of beeping sounds rang out, followed by the click of the door lock disengaging.

“…Huh?”

Han-geon froze with a puzzled expression as he carried his empty bowl to the sink.

For a moment, he wondered if he had misheard.

There was no way Eun-gyeol would be coming at this hour.

But the parents only smiled leisurely, as if they had expected this all along.

Before Han-geon could even process the situation, Eun-gyeol stepped straight into the living room.

Han-geon greeted him with a vacant look on his face.

“…Cha Eun-gyeol?

What are you doing here at this hour?”

“I missed you, so I wrapped things up quickly and rushed over.”

Striding over, Eun-gyeol pulled Han-geon into a light embrace and kissed his cheek first thing.

The parents, who had once reacted with mock disgust whenever they saw things like this, now merely looked on with indulgent expressions and greeted him with a casual, “You’re here?”

Eun-gyeol bowed politely to the parents, greeting them, and then immediately scooped Eun-han up into his arms.

Eun-han, who had finished his meal and was leisurely munching on rice crackers in his chair, burst into laughter as he was lifted.

“Cha Eun-han.

Have you been well?

Did you go to daycare properly?”

“Pa!

Appam-bam-pa!”

“Yeah, Daddy’s here.”

After lifting him into the air a few times and setting him back down, Eun-han dissolved into peals of laughter.

Because he had just eaten, Eun-gyeol played with him more gently than usual.

Seeing that attentiveness, Han-geon smiled faintly to himself.

After playing with the baby for a while, Eun-gyeol set Eun-han down on the mat.

Now was the time to clear things up.

Han-geon was just about to ask why he had come so early and whether he didn’t have a shoot today.

“Eun-gyeol, didn’t you say you had somewhere to go with Han-geon?”

Suddenly, his mother spoke up while carrying dishes to the sink, giving a playful wink.

Han-geon looked puzzled again.

The suspicious feeling he had earlier clearly hadn’t been his imagination.

It felt like everyone was in on something except him.

“Mom, is something going on today?

With Eun-gyeol?”

“I don’t know.

Ask Eun-gyeol.”

“…Cha Eun-gyeol?”

When Han-geon looked at him steadily, demanding an explanation, Eun-gyeol just grinned without answering.

“Let’s go.”

“What are you talking about.

Go where, all of a sudden?”

“It’s a date.”

“Huh?

All of a sudden, why… what about Eun-han?”

“We’re taking him with us.

He’s done eating, right?

I’ll get him dressed, so you get ready and come out too.”

Everything grew more and more confusing.

Someone who shouldn’t be here showed up out of nowhere.

He suddenly asked him out on a date.

The parents weren’t surprised at all and were smiling like they were watching a show.

And now they were going on a late-night date with Eun-han in tow.

What is today, anyway?

Han-geon’s pupils shook wildly.

Had he forgotten something important?

No matter how much he thought about it, today wasn’t any special day.

Still tilting his head in confusion, Han-geon found himself brushing his teeth and packing Eun-han’s daycare bag, as if pushed along by the parents and Eun-gyeol.

“Enjoy your date!”

“And congratulations in advance!”

Receiving those suspiciously cheerful send-offs, Han-geon stepped outside beside Eun-gyeol, who was holding Eun-han.

After buckling Eun-han into the car seat, Eun-gyeol sat calmly in the driver’s seat.

Han-geon, now in the passenger seat, finally started pressing him for answers.

“What is this, seriously.

What’s all this about?

Where are we going right now?”

“Well, it’s a surprise.

If I tell you beforehand, it won’t be fun.”

“What on earth…”

The more brightly Eun-gyeol smiled, the more Han-geon’s unease grew.

Rather than feeling excited, he felt cornered.

Biting his lip, Han-geon forced himself to speak.

“Um… Cha Eun-gyeol.

In case you’re disappointed, I should tell you in advance.”

“Huh?

Tell me what?”

“I’m sorry, but… I didn’t prepare anything.

And to be completely honest, I have no idea what day it is either… sorry.”

Eun-gyeol’s eyes widened for a moment.

Then he burst out laughing.

Despite Han-geon’s brave confession, Eun-gyeol’s face was filled only with amusement.

“Why are you apologizing.

What are you talking about, Han-geon.”

Leaning slightly toward him, Eun-gyeol quickly kissed Han-geon’s cheek.

The loud smack echoed through the car, enough to make Eun-han’s eyes go round.

Embarrassed, Han-geon shoved Eun-gyeol’s shoulder, his ears turning red.

Even so, Eun-gyeol didn’t look the least bit discouraged.

Instead, he smiled so widely it looked like he adored Han-geon to death and gently cupped his cheek.

“Why would you say that.

You have nothing to be sorry for, Han-geon.

Today isn’t any kind of anniversary at all.”

“Really?

That’s a relief… then why are you—”

“Well, maybe from now on, today will become our anniversary.”

His slender fingers pressed the button naturally, starting the engine.

With a steady vibration, the car began to move smoothly forward.

“Anyway, don’t worry about anything.

Just accept my gift happily.

Han-geon, can you do that?”

Nothing was explained, and none of his questions had been answered.

Yet Han-geon nodded as if under a spell.

Listening to Eun-gyeol’s warm, gentle voice, all his confusion and unease seemed to evaporate.

In their place remained only pure anticipation and a heart beating fast.

“Yeah… I can.”

“Thank you.”

Eun-gyeol’s voice rang clear and true, without the slightest wavering.

While driving steadily, he lifted Han-geon’s hand, still tightly interlaced with his own, and kissed it again and again.

Even though no one was watching, the affectionate display felt embarrassingly ticklish.

Han-geon tried to pull his hand away, but Eun-gyeol was stubborn at times like this.

Warm lips pressed down gently, as if stamping a seal, over and over again.
