Chapter 42: Proving the Race

I stared at the two giant blades strapped to Princess Qiaolu’s back. Their scabbards were like molten lava, flowing with shifting light effects. The openwork scabbards almost touched the ground, revealing pitch-black blades through the gaps.

“Oh oh oh, it’s fine. Good that you came.” The king was beaming.

“So what am I here for?” The princess’s question almost made me laugh.

“Qiaolu, Father King hopes we can judge that child. To see if we have the ability to rule the country.” Hongyuan said casually. “Ah, though I don’t care who the next king is. So please hurry up. I still need to go back to manage the caravan.”

Huh? I was puzzled when I heard this. Are all kings in this world so open-minded? The king doesn’t seem old, why decide the next one already?

Also, second son Hongyuan, what’s with this indifferent attitude? Is the era I transmigrated to unusually enlightened? This second prince’s thinking is too refreshingly unconventional!

“Oh, I see. But why judge a little kid? And he’s so cute!” Princess Qiaolu turned back, looking at me and said.

“Oh god, they’re mistaking me for a girl again. Definitely!”

“Because he’s a Nocturnal! So I think he should be executed! Don’t forget how the Nocturnals treated us Red Demons!!” The eldest prince Wenwu still insisted I was a Nocturnal. I really suspect he has a grudge against me.

“Hmph? This kid is a vampire? I don’t think so. Oh, it really is!” Qiaolu glanced at me again.

“Hey hey princess, didn’t you just say I was cute? When you found me cute, didn’t you notice I looked like a vampire? Why did it take you so long to react? Do I have no presence?!”

“Wait, based on what General Cloud just said, we can’t determine if this child is a Nocturnal or not.” Hongyuan said.

“Oh? You guys? What do you mean? One says yes, another says no?” The princess stepped in front of me with cold and light steps, grabbed my neck with her gauntleted hand, and lifted me up.

“Wuwuwu–” I couldn’t breathe! My god, princess, doesn’t your country have any normal people? Is this how you treat a child? Are you trying to choke me to death?

But luckily, I could barely get a few breaths. Then this princess elder sister pinched my face, made me open my mouth, checked my teeth, felt my ears. Then she spun me in the air, looking front and back. Princess, are you picking vegetables?

“Right, he really doesn’t meet the standards of a Nocturnal. No wings, no fangs, ears like a normal person.” As she finished, I felt her hand release my neck. I thudded onto the ground. The handcuffs and anklets suddenly dropped, causing a sharp pain, and I fell forward.

“Cough cough cough.” I coughed and gasped for air.

“As expected, I’m just unlucky. Unlucky wherever I go.”

“I just found out I can’t use magic, and now there’s a sadist bullying me. Toxic!”

“Ah, third sister, that’s not what I meant… Forget it…” Hongyuan seemed embarrassed by his third sister’s behavior.

“So what race is he after all?” The princess put her hands on her hips and asked.

Because I was close this time, I noticed that besides the two blades on her back, she also wore a rapier at her waist.

“Meow meow meow? Three-sword style?”

“According to him, he says he’s from the Black Feather clan.” General Cloud explained for me.

“Oh! … Ah?! You say he’s Black Feather clan?” Princess Qiaolu said in surprise. “Then it’s easy! Feibai, please bring that broken magic cannon from last time, and we can prove it.”

“Okay.” Feibai walked past me without a second glance. I guessed it was to avoid arousing suspicion.

“Third sister, what are you doing?!” Eldest brother Wenwu glared at Qiaolu.

“Very simple. Just verify if he’s Black Feather clan. If he is, then it proves he’s not Nocturnal.” The princess also glared fiercely at Wenwu.

At this point, after listening to the whole drama, I realized that this eldest brother and Qiaolu really were siblings! Look at their hostile gazes, exactly the same, piercingly sharp.

Wenwu: “Huh?”

“Hmph!” They both snorted in unison. Truly siblings…

Then General Feibai led four or five soldiers, pushing a wooden cart, carrying a broken magic cannon into the hall. It seemed to be the same type as the ones I saw outside Demon Castle, except this one had a hole in its belly.

Then the princess grabbed me again, and I heard wind in my ears as she instantly brought me to the cannon. She placed my hand on a round, hand-like scanner’s blue crystal panel under the cannon body.

“Damn, this cannon has this thing?” Immediately, with a “clack!”, the cannon broke! Originally just a hole, but when I touched it, the cannon self-destructed! It turned into pieces of white metal, and two transparent crystal magic disks fell to the ground.

“Geez, is there nothing inside this cannon? Just these two disks? No! Did I just get into trouble?!”

“Ah– this, this, I didn’t mean to, I…” I tensed up.

But unexpectedly, everyone present gasped!

“He really is Black Feather clan!”

“The magic cannon actually disassembled on its own!”

“Oh my, incredible!”

I heard countless similar voices, and a glimmer of hope rose in my heart: “Hmm? Could my race be my cheat?”

I was still thinking, maybe I still had some hope. Just then, this crazy princess suddenly picked me up and spun me around in the air.

“Waaah–” I screamed in fright.

“Hahaha, indeed a Black Feather clan member! Hahaha!” she laughed innocently, while I spun in despair.

“Great! I didn’t expect coming back to the city was the right choice! Yun Feibai, I want to borrow your Blood Wolf unit! Set off immediately! To Dream Southern Forest! That’s it, bye bye! See you later, Dad!” With that, she ran off carrying me. This woman ran like the wind. I couldn’t even see the scenery along the way! I just felt a strong wind roaring in my ears.

[The moment Princess Qiaolu took away Ninety-nine, the princess removed Ninety-nine’s magic cuffs.]

“Princess, Highness! Slow down! Slow down! Aah–” I screamed all the way, until finally the princess placed me on a Jia beast.

“Huh? Where is this? Who am I?” I was dazed and confused. I found myself in a military camp, surrounded by soldiers in armor or mage robes.
