Chapter 103: The Scales of Good and Evil

When Lin Qing first saw the skeletal frame twitching on his back, the young boy was naturally terrified.

He even suffered nightmares, envisioning the skeleton reanimating, yearning to snatch him away and devour him.

However, due to his confinement in an iron cage at the time, finding a mirror was an impossible feat.

As a result, his initial fear gradually faded with time, replaced instead by a burgeoning curiosity.

Everyone else bore varying numbers of skulls above their heads, but he was markedly different from them all.

‘Why was he so unique?’

‘And why had this strange ability suddenly manifested?’

During his days of captivity, Lin Qing found himself with ample time, allowing him to calmly ponder these mysteries.

Yet, the more he delved into these thoughts, the bolder he became.

Unlike his initial terror of the skeleton on his back, Lin Qing now actively sought opportunities to find a mirror, eager to meticulously examine his unique peculiarity.

With patient waiting, Lin Qing eventually stumbled upon a suitable chance.

The second time he glimpsed the skeletal frame on his back, Lin Qing suppressed the fear clawing at his heart and began to observe it with intense seriousness.

The skeletal frame lay inert upon his shoulder, unmoving, like nothing more than a grotesque, horrifying ornament.

Unlike the skulls of others, which displayed various expressions, Lin Qing perceived the skeletal frame on his back as utterly inanimate.

Even after repeated examinations, the outcome remained unchanged.

This filled Lin Qing with disappointment; his uniqueness, he concluded, held no particular power.

‘If only he could instantly defeat the villains and escape this place!’

Alas, such thoughts were destined to remain mere fantasies.

However…

After being dragged from the basement by the black-faced guards, an iron chain fastened around his neck as they led him upwards, Lin Qing, once a vibrant and lively boy, gradually fell silent, becoming a mere plaything for their amusement.

He was terrified.

He feared he, too, would perish.

To survive and escape this place, to see his mother’s smiling face once more.

Lin Qing knew he could not die, no matter what.

Therefore, others had to die.

Though he hadn’t personally killed these individuals, in situations where one side had to prevail, it was Lin Qing who emerged victorious in the end.

He watched with his own eyes as the black-faced men wielded heavy cleavers, their blades rising and falling, extinguishing vibrant lives before him.

Initially, Lin Qing felt profound guilt, which slowly morphed into numbness.

The weak begging for mercy, those wailing to the heavens, the ones spewing curses…

All transformed into cold corpses.

After that, time lost all meaning for Lin Qing.

Only every agonizing second.

It was then, quite by chance, that Lin Qing discovered the skeletal frame perched on his shoulder was no longer rigid as before; it now emitted a faint red glow.

A thin layer of chilling black bone began to solidify behind it.

Upon noticing Lin Qing’s gaze, it tilted its head in a strangely endearing manner.

It had actually moved.

Regarding the peculiar transformation of the skeletal frame on his back, Lin Qing was no longer the timid boy he once was.

Driven by a desperate need for a mental reprieve, a space to forget his grim reality, he began to delve deeper into the skeleton’s secrets.

Subsequently, Lin Qing noticed that whenever someone died, the shadowy form, which clung to the skeletal frame like clothing, would grow a fraction more solid.

Gradually, it began to obscure the white bones beneath.

Simultaneously, the Scales of Good and Evil began to take nascent form.

This allowed Lin Qing to gradually understand that the changes in the black shadow were related to the deceased, and all of them were people who had died because of him.
