As Su Yao’s plan unfolded, Lin Qing became more adept at walking Shirley, the well-trained dog. Shirley’s agility and charm in actions like catching frisbees and playing dead made the walks enjoyable. Though Lin Qing had not seen a cat or dog in ten years, except for cockroaches and centipedes in the cramped basement, he found contentment in this brief period of dog ownership. He favored fluffy, cute animals, especially cats, with their sensitive and proud demeanor. Su Yao’s mysterious feline-like aura intrigued him. Lin Qing imagined a future where, post-graduation, he might adopt a cat to dispel the loneliness of his home.
“It seems they are more cautious than expected!”
As Lin Qing daydreamed about the joy of having a cat, Su Yao’s voice broke his reverie, pulling him back to reality. Since their first walk, Su Yao had been more reserved, except for their shared moments of walking Shirley. Despite their shared goal of luring Wang Fanran out, no progress had been made. Wang Fanran remained elusive, as if testing their patience. Lin Qing could only wait, wondering who would ultimately prevail.
“Wang Fanran’s patience isn’t great. He won’t hold out for long; he’ll show up eventually.”
Walking side by side, Lin Qing sensed someone following them, though without malicious intent. He kept this feeling to himself, not wanting to reveal his sensitivity.
“Tomorrow is the weekend, and with more people around, opportunities will increase. Wang Fanran might seize this chance to create chaos and steal the dog.”
Su Yao’s thoughtful analysis resonated with Lin Qing. The weekend often saw more people in the neighborhood, but if Wang Fanran acted, it would likely cause a commotion. Still, Lin Qing worried about potential harm to others.
“Don’t worry, even with Chen Sen’s protection, Wang Fanran can’t cause too much trouble. If someone gets hurt, the police will get involved, and it won’t be just about a stolen dog anymore.”
Su Yao’s eyes, obscured by her hair, held a hint of annoyance. She preferred staying home, where she could admire Lin Qing’s face and indulge in playful, intimate moments. This would increase Lin Qing’s tolerance for her presence.
“We need to be extra careful over the next two days.”
“I agree. So, why don’t I stay at your place tonight?”
“…”
Lin Qing’s silence spoke volumes of his reluctance. Su Yao enjoyed teasing him, but her playful words hid a serious intent. If Lin Qing agreed, she would move in that very night. After catching Wang Fanran, she would have no reason to stay, yet she adapted quickly to any situation.
“Just kidding. I only mentioned to your neighbors that I’m your girlfriend. Now, everyone in the complex thinks I am. If I moved in, there would be even more gossip.”
Seeing Lin Qing’s discomfort, Su Yao smiled, sharing the neighborhood’s latest gossip. She regretted not spreading more rumors earlier. Lin Qing felt a weight in his steps, realizing the sudden increase in people greeting him, especially men with obvious intentions, ignoring him completely.
“Hey, Lin Qing, walking the dog again?”
A young man in his twenties approached, his eyes fixed on Su Yao despite greeting Lin Qing. His admiration was clear and unhidden. He offered them some yogurt, handing the containers to Su Yao with a subtle attempt at physical contact. Lin Qing, sensing the man’s ulterior motives, stepped in front of Su Yao and took the yogurt, drinking both containers in quick succession.
“Sorry, I was thirsty.”
Lin Qing’s unusual behavior amused Su Yao, who laughed softly, her hand on his back. Afterward, Su Yao declined the yogurt, citing her lactose intolerance, and they continued their walk, hand in hand. Despite the unwanted attention, Su Yao found Lin Qing’s protective instincts endearing.
“I just dislike their hidden agendas.”
“I know.”
Lin Qing’s explanation, though dry, made Su Yao smile even more. She nodded, clearly not believing him. Lin Qing sighed inwardly, wondering about his recent impulsive behavior.
“Come closer, I see one of Wang Fanran’s accomplices watching us!”
Su Yao’s expression remained calm, but she pressed against Lin Qing, her voice low as she spoke, signaling that their wait might finally be over.
