Chapter 130: The Precursor of the Darkborn

Haozi had been impatient before hearing the words from the little girl’s mouth. He knew a mere child could not possibly possess such detailed information. With a face full of trepidation, he gazed at the little girl. However, she wore a skull mask, completely obscuring her features.

Yet, the sight of the skull mask sent a shiver down his spine. Though Haozi knew he had no reason to fear—Chen Sen’s dog-stealing syndicate had long since dissolved—he hadn’t committed any unforgivable transgressions.

Still, the little girl’s final mention of the slaughterhouse address sent a jolt through Haozi’s heart. He had only ever spoken of it to a few students, so how could this child possibly know?

Her grave tone now suggested she might be pinning the slaughterhouse fire on him. ‘This is completely unjust!’ he thought.

‘Wait a moment,’ he mused. ‘She just said Wang Fanran died. Did he truly perish in that slaughterhouse?’

Ever since he was apprehended in the residential community, Haozi had learned the true name of Shike. It was Wang Fanran.

The bodies at the slaughterhouse had been incinerated in the fire. Chen Sen had immediately dispatched people to retrieve them, leveraging unique influence to prevent further police investigation, making identification impossible.

Haozi had believed the ‘dead fatty,’ Shike, possessed enough cunning to avoid such a gruesome end. He was convinced Wang Fanran would seek him out once the commotion subsided, and they would resume their grand plans for wealth.

Thus, Haozi had always maintained that Wang Fanran was still alive, having escaped the inferno at the slaughterhouse.

However, the little girl’s words now brutally forced Haozi to confront the grim truth.

Wang Fanran was dead.

“Who exactly are you?!”

As these thoughts raced through Haozi’s mind, his voice trembled when he spoke. His height, over 1.7 meters, seemed to shrink before the little girl, gradually becoming insignificant, as if he were fading away.

Liu Ying, standing nearby, sensed the gravity of the situation and wisely remained silent.

However, a wave of confusion washed over her. Had the little girl just mentioned Wang Fanran? Was it the same Wang Fanran she knew?

The one who had instigated harm against Lin Qing, then fled home and remained missing ever since. ‘How could he be dead?’ she wondered.

“Me?” the little girl replied. “I am a Precursor of the Darkborn, managing the experimental zone in Lotus City on behalf of Chen Sen.”

Upon hearing Haozi’s question, the little girl didn’t prolong the suspense. Instead, she calmly revealed her identity, showing no intention of concealment.

Yet, these words only caused Haozi’s body to tremble even more violently.

He had suspected the little girl’s identity was extraordinary, but he never imagined she was Chen Sen’s direct representative. To be on par with Chen Sen meant she was certainly not someone to provoke!

“Oh, Esteemed Lady,” Haozi stammered, “this lowly one was blind and failed to recognize your eminence. I truly deserve to die a thousand deaths!”

Lost in these frantic thoughts, Haozi immediately dropped to his knees, the cold pavement biting into his aching joints.

At that moment, however, Haozi could spare no thought for anything else. With a mournful expression, he cursed his own wretched luck.

This new administrator, who had so openly revealed her identity without any pretense, likely had no intention of letting him off lightly. ‘This is truly the end!’ he thought in despair.

He wondered if there were others lurking nearby. With a single command from this administrator, someone might just appear and snap his neck.

“Indeed, you deserve death,” the little girl conceded. “However, I have matters to discuss with you first.”

As Haozi shrewdly knelt without hesitation, the little girl let out a few soft chuckles, as clear and melodious as ringing brass bells. Yet, her voice remained utterly devoid of warmth, cold and merciless, like a sharp blade poised to leave its sheath.

It was sharp and perilous.

The little girl raised a hand, her black cloak no longer able to conceal a pale, slender wrist. As she extended her index finger to Haozi’s forehead, it felt as though a cold gun was pressed against him.

Haozi’s body convulsed with a shiver, nearly sending him sprawling to the ground in terror. He knew, however, that he absolutely could not collapse now, lest he truly be killed.

With that thought, Haozi nodded repeatedly, like a chick pecking at grain, not daring to defy the administrator before him.

“Who is Lin Qing?”

However, the little girl’s next question caused Haozi to freeze. He couldn’t fathom why she would suddenly bring up a name he didn’t recognize.

‘How could he possibly know who Lin Qing was?’

Liu Ying, who had been standing silently to the side, showed no outward change in expression. Yet, her hands, clasped behind her back, unconsciously tightened, her heart pounding with a mix of shock and apprehension.

While hearing Wang Fanran’s name initially might have been a mere coincidence, hearing ‘Lin Qing’ now signaled that something truly extraordinary was unfolding.

‘What had Lin Qing and Wang Fanran done, unbeknownst to her?’

The sudden mention of Lin Qing’s name left Liu Ying, who had been contemplating escape, rooted to the spot as if nailed to the ground, utterly unable to move.

Her rational mind screamed at her to leave, to avoid getting entangled in something dangerous. Yet, an overwhelming curiosity compelled her to stay and discover the unfolding events.

‘What exactly was this matter involving Lin Qing?’

“Esteemed one, I don’t know…”

“You would do well to consider it very carefully.”

Then, as Haozi racked his brain but still couldn’t recall who Lin Qing was, and just as he began to speak, the little girl’s finger pressed harder against his forehead. The ring she wore scraped against his brow.

Haozi’s heart rate immediately accelerated into a frantic rhythm.

‘He truly had no idea who this Lin Qing was!’ ‘He wasn’t part of his dog-stealing gang, nor was he someone Haozi knew personally.’ ‘How was he supposed to answer?’

‘What was his name… wait,’ he thought, ‘Lin Qing, that name sounds somewhat familiar.’

Haozi, who had been struggling to recall Lin Qing’s identity, suddenly experienced a flash of insight. He remembered being caught by a robust young man in the residential community, and during their conversation, one of them had called out a name.

It was Lin Qing!

“Esteemed one, I remember!” Haozi exclaimed. “Lin Qing is Wang Fanran’s classmate; they attend the same high school! Wang Fanran once swore he would get revenge on Lin Qing!”

Having timely recalled Lin Qing’s identity, Haozi quickly pleaded for mercy. He fervently hoped this administrator would remove her finger and cease terrifying him.

It was excruciating.

“Classmate? Heh,” the little girl scoffed softly. “They’re quick to erase their tracks, and the information was falsified. To think they’re from the same school. So, the people I sent there suddenly vanished because of this Lin Qing…”

After hearing Haozi’s words, the little girl mumbled indistinctly, her words blurring into an incomprehensible whisper.

Eventually, the little girl fell silent, resuming her insistent poking of Haozi’s forehead with her finger.

“What does he look like?”

“About that… I really don’t know what that man named Lin Qing looks like,” Haozi confessed. “His long hair covered his face; I couldn’t see his features at all!”

Witnessing the administrator’s interest in Lin Qing, Haozi desperately tried to recall the circumstances of their encounter. Yet, he found himself utterly unable to conjure any more information about Lin Qing.

Ironically, the beautiful girl and the robust young man who had been present had left a far more vivid impression on him.

He only remembered Lin Qing’s name because of his visual kei-style long hair that obscured his face, which had left a slight impression. Otherwise, such an ordinary person would be indistinguishable in a crowd.

“Does he have any particular background?”

“Esteemed one, I only met him by chance that one time,” Haozi pleaded. “This is all I know!”

Upon hearing the inquiry about Lin Qing’s background, Haozi felt a pang of confusion. That day, Lin Qing had been dressed plainly, hardly appearing to be from a wealthy family. What kind of background could such a person possibly possess?

Moreover, what connection did this Lin Qing have to the slaughterhouse fire? Could it be that these students were the ones who set the blaze?

‘No way!’ he thought. ‘These youngsters couldn’t possibly be that audacious!’

If that were truly the case, then he, who had given them the slaughterhouse address, would surely be unable to escape retribution!

Haozi, consumed by these fearful thoughts, ultimately could not restrain himself from speaking.

“Esteemed one, may I ask if there’s anything unusual about this Lin Qing?”

Upon hearing Haozi’s question, the little girl no longer pressed her finger against his forehead. After retracting her arm, she appeared to ponder seriously for a moment before slowly speaking.

“Yes, there is something amiss,” she confirmed. “Most of those who knew him are dead, and the information has been falsified. However, I’m fortunate to have encountered you; now I finally know where our target is.”

Immediately, the little girl’s voice took on a lighter, more relaxed tone, shedding her previous cold demeanor.

Haozi, too, breathed a sigh of relief, thinking he had divulged everything he knew. He should be safe now, shouldn’t he?

Just as Haozi secretly rejoiced at having escaped danger, the little girl suddenly reached out and seized his neck again.

With a mere, effortless squeeze, the distinct sound of bones shattering filled the air.

Haozi’s eyes widened, and he tried to struggle, but his strength failed him. Soon, his breath ceased.

Having dispatched him with such ease, the little girl contemptuously flicked her hand, as if discarding trash. Haozi’s body immediately slumped to the ground.

The information she sought had been obtained. Such useless individuals deserved to be eliminated.

However, besides Haozi, there was another spectator present. They, too, needed to be dealt with.

As the little girl pondered this, she looked up at Liu Ying. The skull mask on her face appeared even more terrifying under the dim streetlights, and the cold, indifferent black eyes hidden beneath it seemed to silently declare that Liu Ying was next to die.

Yet, Liu Ying, who had just witnessed a murder firsthand, felt no fear. Instead, a peculiar sense of excitement coursed through her.

She herself was surprised by this reaction. In the past, she would have screamed in terror.

It was precisely this calm demeanor that piqued the little girl’s curiosity.

As if something clicked, the girl swiftly approached Liu Ying, then immediately lifted her wrist. There, in the center of Liu Ying’s wrist, was a square red mark.

Just as she had expected. Indeed.

To her surprise, the special experimental agent that the organization was developing was also present here. This woman could not be killed.

“Your luck is quite good. I won’t kill you, but you had best forget everything that happened today. Do not invite trouble upon yourself.”

After seeing the square red mark, the little girl released Liu Ying’s hand.

Having finally found one of the clues to the slaughterhouse’s eradication, she no longer needed to remain here. Once she investigated this Lin Qing, she might finally understand what truly happened at the slaughterhouse.

That good-for-nothing Chen Sen was now missing, his fate unknown, leaving behind a heap of problems. If Chen Sen hadn’t failed to leave any useful information, she wouldn’t have to start her investigation from scratch, causing her immense headaches since her arrival in Lotus City.

“Who are you?”

However, just as the little girl turned to leave, Liu Ying, who had remained silent, suddenly spoke.

The little girl smiled softly, leaving behind a fleeting remark.

“My name is Bai Lengleng.”
