Chapter 40: A Familiar Threat

I had barely reached the vicinity of my home when I heard my sister’s frantic screams for help.

A surge of anxiety gripped my heart, and without daring to delay another moment, I rushed back.

By the time I sprinted back, a knife clutched in my hand, I realized the situation wasn’t as dire as I’d initially feared.

My sister’s loud shouts had drawn over a dozen zombies to our doorstep. Their faces contorted into grotesque snarls, they roared, seemingly intent on breaking down the door.

Wait a moment…

These zombies weren’t actually trying to break down the door! Instead, they were all clustered beside it, their hands reaching frantically upwards, clawing at something unseen.

As my gaze followed their frantic movements, curiosity piqued, I spotted three unfamiliar men clinging to the tree right by our front door.

The tree stood a certain distance from the house, making it impossible for these men to simply leap inside.

Thus, they could only cling tightly to the large tree, not daring to let go.

With so many zombies below, the men clutched the tree trunk desperately, their eyes wide with fear, refusing to release their grip.

Their feet dangled in mid-air, relentlessly clawed at by the ravenous undead.

“Hmph, you bastards! Trying to pick my family’s lock, are you? Go to hell!”

From the second floor, my sister poked her small head out the window, simultaneously flipping a middle finger at the men in the tree.

A triumphant smirk played on her face, clearly oblivious to what she would do once the zombies inevitably devoured these men.

Our home’s wooden front door would not be able to withstand such a large number of zombies.

“Bai Xia, quickly! Throw us a rope and let us in!”

“That’s right! Otherwise, even as ghosts, we won’t let you off!”

“Wang Lili is still in our hands! If we can’t get back, be careful, that woman might be gang-raped and killed.”

While the three men clinging to the tree wouldn’t be killed by the zombies immediately, they couldn’t endure indefinitely, their strength bound to give out.

At that point, only death awaited them.

Peeking out from around the corner, I cast my gaze towards my home. From the looks of it, my sister appeared to be out of immediate danger.

However, the current turn of events had caught me completely off guard.

Who exactly were these men who had suddenly appeared? And how had they ended up right outside my house?

Then there was Wang Lili, the name they kept mentioning. It stirred a strange sense of familiarity within me.

I had definitely heard that name before.

“Pah! I don’t care if you live or die! And as for that Wang Lili woman, I already told you, she’s not my friend anymore!”

Listening to the three men, an angry scowl marred my sister’s face.

She retorted loudly, her voice echoing and quickly attracting even more zombies.

“My dear ancestor, please stop shouting!”

“Can’t you just lure the zombies away? We’ll leave right after that, alright?”

“Hmph, how am I supposed to know how to lure zombies away?”

Listening to their exchange, I couldn’t help but shake my head.

However, what my sister had just said suddenly brought a memory rushing back to me with perfect clarity.

On the very first day of my rebirth, I had encountered my sister entangled with a group of hoodlums outside a coffee shop. Only after I had knocked those delinquents down did she explain the full situation to me.

It turned out that Wang Lili, my sister’s best friend, had angered the hoodlums’ boss and actually ‘mortgaged’ my sister to him as collateral.

Fortunately, my sister was clever and wasn’t taken away by that group of ruffians.

And fortunately, after my rebirth, I hadn’t been late…

Before my rebirth, my sister’s running away from home had absolutely been connected to these very hoodlums!

Perhaps because I had been delayed at the coffee shop, retrieving money for Mother, my sister had been forced to succumb to the hoodlums’ coercion, which led her to leave home just as the apocalypse erupted.

For a full decade, I hadn’t encountered my sister even once.

It was highly probable that my sister had perished right at the onset of the zombie virus outbreak.

Since heaven had granted me this chance to be reborn, I would not allow history to repeat itself.

Now, these hoodlums had actually found their way to my home, sparking a fresh wave of vigilance within me.

This indicated that their boss, Brother Li, still hadn’t given up his designs on my sister.

At this realization, alarm bells rang loudly in my mind.

The conversation between Li Fenghua and the other two men outside the mall earlier suddenly ignited a bold conjecture in my mind.

The name ‘Brother Li’ had also come up in their discussion.

Moreover, the factory address Li Fenghua mentioned was the exact same location where my sister had told me the hoodlums had arranged to meet her previously.

Even if it were a coincidence, it couldn’t be this uncanny!
