Chapter 50: The Descent

We sat in the “ruins” for the rest of the time, waiting for the Young Master and the others to return.

I kept wanting to ask the Knight Lady, who was leaning against the wall and looking out the window, what had happened to that vampire. But I couldn’t bring myself to say it.

“So… so, does no one live in this building?” I finally found a topic and tossed it over to the Knight Lady.

“When the Young Master told me to come, I had already relocated everyone. I trust the Young Master’s decisions.”

“I see…”

The Knight Lady in front of me kept staring out the window, her face full of joy.

He Yizi and I sat on the chairs. She was flipping through a book on the Young Master’s desk. Curiosity made me lean in.

“What are you doing?”

“Reviewing, of course… I have exams too, you know… and don’t get so close.” She pushed me, chair and all, a yard away with one hand.

“She’s much stronger than you, isn’t she?”

The Knight Lady, who had been looking out the window, suddenly turned to us and said.

“Yes…” I replied weakly.

“After all, she’s tasted human blood. She’s naturally much stronger than a vampire like you who’s never tasted it.”

“Mm…”

I had ended up in her hunting range before, and she had ended up in another vampire’s hunting range. So vampires had a strong sense of territory, didn’t they?

But I would never touch human blood. I looked at the huge crack cutting through the world outside and shuddered.

“Knight Lady, why do you help protect vampires like us for the Young Master?”

“Because I follow Lady Fuwelle’s orders.” It was a mechanical, standard answer. But maybe that was the right answer.

For the rest of the time, we didn’t say a single word. I pulled a random book from the Young Master’s shelf and flipped through it, until the sound of people chatting downstairs interrupted my thoughts.

“How did the dorm end up like this?”

“Did something change?”

“Idiot Kelo, don’t you see that huge crack?”

That was Xiao Linlin and the Ke Ying and Kelo sisters. Then the Young Master was…!

I jumped up from the chair. The Knight Lady who had been leaning against the bed was already gone. I hurried to the door, but the hallway was exactly where the building had been sliced. With no stairs, how was I supposed to get down?

“Getting down is indeed a problem…”

He Yizi suddenly appeared beside me, startling me. Had I said that out loud while thinking? How did she know? I thought she was still reading. She blinked at me.

“Then I guess I’ll reluctantly help the little house pet.”

With that, black bat-like wings sprouted from her sides. She grabbed me by the waist and leaped down before I could react. I hit the ground before I even knew what happened.

She hovered in the air, scratched her head, then crossed her arms over her chest and looked down at me with a haughty expression.

“I’ll be going now.”

She turned and flapped her wings, but she stayed right where she was.

“He Yizi, didn’t you promise to stay by my and Chuye’s side? How can you go back on your word?”

The Young Master appeared beside me. Kelo was using that wind-pressure control magic she had used when she first caught me to trap He Yizi. But somehow, that line sounded like something a villain would say coming from the Young Master’s mouth.

“I… I… I think I did say that… hehehe…” He Yizi stammered from the air, still restrained.

“So, shall I help you down, or…”

With that, the pale blue magic patterns in Kelo’s hand slowly faded. He Yizi descended gently to the ground and retracted her wings.

“Alright, little Chuye, we can go home now.”

I looked at the broken walls around us. That little girl like a schoolkid should…
