The Young Master pulled the cross from her pocket. I had no idea where the box went, but she took it out directly, lacking a bit of ceremony. Still, I seemed to have forgotten about the necklace.
She grabbed my arm and led me to a bench by a small path.
“Didn’t you say before it would hurt me?” I asked, even though Ashiya had already explained its purpose. I wanted to hear it from her.
“I asked He Yizi. She said this can make you more human-like! So… no… no… it’s even more… um…” She stumbled over her words for a moment.
Seeing her flustered, I said, “Make me closer to your features? Give my body warmth, and make it so my hair doesn’t wither the moment it falls out?”
“Huh? How did you know?” Her face lit up with realization.
“Well…”
Damn. I spoke too quickly. How was I supposed to answer her?

She wrapped the necklace around my neck and fastened the clasp.
“No wonder Father’s gifts, even if ordinary, are always so beautiful!”
I gently picked up the silver cross and examined it closely. In the center of the plain cross was a striking ruby-like gem.
“Your identity has already been exposed in the royal court!” I suddenly remembered what Magic Box Ashiya had told me in the spirit world.
But the Young Master didn’t seem to realize how serious that was.
“Young Master, why would the King give me this?” I asked, choosing my words carefully.
“Hmm… good question! This necklace is beneficial to vampires. Why would Father give it to you? Could it be… could it be that Father gave the wrong one?”
I tapped her lightly on the shoulder. She giggled.
“Just kidding…”
“This is serious business, you know? Be serious.”
“Well… that means Father probably knows you’re a vampire?”
“Probably.”
“But since he gave you something that helps you, it means he’s not out to hurt you! So don’t worry about it. Let me suck your blood!”
“No way… How do I use this?”
“This…”
She took off the necklace again, held it outside the umbrella for a while, then brought it back. It wasn’t so much cloudy as overcast, since the sun kept peeking through.
“Put it on!”
“Okay…”
She helped me put it on again. This time, a wave of warmth flooded my body.
She grabbed my hand, felt the warmth, then reached up and touched my face, smiling dreamily.
“It works! You’re warm! It’s a bit lower than a human’s temperature, but that’s probably because of the weather. If you wear it after sunbathing for a while, it’ll be even better!”
She stood up, and I followed. She took my hand.
“Now that you have your cross, will you go shopping with me?”
“Can I… get something to eat first? I’m a little hungry…”
My stomach growled audibly.
“Sure. You actually asking to eat is rare…”
“Well, I haven’t eaten since last night, and He Yizi sucked a lot of blood from me this morning…”
Suddenly, a voice came from above.
“Oh… He Yizi! You know He Yizi!”
