Chapter 56: Seeking Answers

After wrapping up her late-night duties, Murong Fanghua returned to the bedchamber. Following an intense, passionate encounter, the two shared a warm bath before falling asleep in each other’s arms.

The next morning, Ye Feng opened his eyes. He didn’t make a single sound or movement, remaining motionless in Murong Fanghua’s embrace.

He could distinctly feel that his lower abdomen had grown noticeably rounder. This was definitely not the result of sleeping for just a single day; at the very least, a full month must have passed.

How could I have slept for an entire month? Something was fundamentally wrong here. Knowing this wasn’t the time to investigate, he closed his eyes and feigned sleep.

As long as he pretended to be asleep, he wouldn’t expose himself. Once Murong Fanghua left, he would have time to seek out the truth. Even if the odds of finding answers were slim, it was worth a shot.

After roughly half an hour of pretend sleep, Murong Fanghua finally stirred.

Feeling her awaken beside him, Ye Feng’s heart hammered against his ribs. If she caught on, everything would be ruined.

Fortunately, perhaps due to morning grogginess, Murong Fanghua noticed nothing amiss.

After carrying out her usual morning routine, she pressed a soft kiss onto Ye Feng’s forehead and stepped out of the bedchamber.

Ye Feng didn’t wake up immediately. Exercising extreme caution, he stayed still for a while longer, opening his eyes only after confirming no one else was entering the room.

Sitting up in bed, he scanned the surroundings for any clue. His gaze finally settled on the smartphone resting on the nightstand.

Reaching over, he discovered the phone was unlocked. A wave of nervous excitement washed over him as he unlocked it and began frantically searching through its contents.

Unfortunately, he found nothing. It was merely a clean, ordinary new phone containing only a few preinstalled apps and a couple of games that appeared to have been downloaded recently.

He had no choice but to abandon the smartphone as a dead end.

Propped up on the edge of the mattress, Ye Feng plunged into deep thought. Initially, he had been sent away for reconditioning. Locating those two specialists was impossible, so that lead was completely cold.

That left Murong Fanghua as his only remaining lead. But if he wanted to keep her in the dark, what should he do?

He couldn’t have remained asleep for an entire month straight. Something unexpected must have happened. He needed to understand what state he was in during that month—or rather, whenever he was “asleep.”

His eyes drifted back to the clock app icon on the smartphone screen.

Opening the app, he saw a recently created alarm entry. With a racing heart, he tapped to open its settings.

The moment he opened it, that haunting, familiar tune began to play. The second he recognized the melody, Ye Feng immediately closed the app.

Yet even those few seconds of exposure left his mind feeling hazy and disoriented.

Shaking his head violently to regain clarity, he locked the phone screen. Simply finding this music didn’t offer a real breakthrough, and relying solely on himself wouldn’t yield the answers he desperately needed.

Unless…

Meanwhile, Guen stepped out of the Hild family manor, driving his car toward the royal palace before pulling over a hundred meters from the main entrance.

The moment he stepped out, an attendant stepped forward to take his keys, driving the car toward the parking area.

Gazing up at the grand palace, Guen walked inside with light, measured steps. He wanted to visit Ye Feng again, hoping to offer him sincere comfort and guidance.

He felt his previous conversation with Ye Feng had gone relatively smoothly. With a few more talks, he believed he could help the boy accept the situation.

However, when he entered the main hall and met Murong Fanghua, she turned him down cold.

“I’ve already brought this up with Mother. Once a suitable date is chosen, we will hold our wedding. As for him, you don’t need to concern yourself with it.”

Murong Fanghua spoke with absolute detachment, her eyes void of any emotion.

“But… won’t this be unfair to him?”

“I said you don’t need to get involved. Do you not understand plain words?”

“Alright… then can I at least see him?”

“Didn’t I tell you to stay out of it? Why do you insist on seeing him?”

Guen could clearly hear the sharp impatience in Murong Fanghua’s voice, yet he still wanted to meet Ye Feng. During their last meeting, he had felt profound pity for the boy, assuming Ye Feng was born into servitude and suffered a tragic life. Guen wanted to offer comfort and become his friend.

Growing up as a male noble, Guen had often been teased and manipulated by peers at school. Only Sister Murong, Qingning, and her sister had protected him and provided warmth during those lonely years. Now, he wanted to pass that same warmth along to Ye Feng.

“I know you don’t love me, but I just want to see him—as a new friend. Is that alright?”

Guen’s humble tone softened Murong Fanghua’s stance slightly. In truth, she didn’t want to overthink these matters anymore; she simply wanted to push forward and get it over with.

Yet reality kept reminding her that brute force alone couldn’t resolve everything.

“Fine. You can go see him. Furthermore, you may visit him whenever you like from now on—there’s no need to ask my permission every time.”

“Thank you, Sister Murong!”

Guen offered a warm, bright smile. Seeing his smile, Murong Fanghua dismissed him with a subtle wave of her hand.

She couldn’t bear to look at that smile—because she wore a similar smile herself. The difference was that his smile came genuinely from the heart, while hers was merely a hypocritical mask.

Guen walked alone through the palace corridors, completely indifferent to the curious glances of the passing staff.

Before long, he arrived at the bedchamber door and knocked gently.

Knock, knock, knock! Knock, knock, knock!

Inside the room, Ye Feng—who was racking his brain for a way out—froze as the knocking echoed through the room.

A second later, he forced himself to relax. It couldn’t be Murong Fanghua. If it were her, she would never bother knocking; she would walk straight in unannounced and have her way with him.

Since it wasn’t Murong Fanghua, he had little reason to panic. But if it wasn’t her, who could it be?

After knocking for a while with no response, Guen assumed Ye Feng was busy inside. Noticing the door was unlocked, he gently pushed it open and stepped in.

During those few moments, Ye Feng mentally prepared himself for whoever might walk through the door—perhaps Qingning, Murong Fanghua’s bodyguard.

To his utter surprise, a handsome blonde young man stepped into the room.

“Hello there, we meet again.”

The blonde young man offered a gentle smile, but Ye Feng’s brow furrowed in confusion.

We meet again? That implied they had met before. Yet Ye Feng had absolutely zero memory of this person.

Before Ye Feng could process the thought, the blonde young man stepped closer.

Gazing at Ye Feng, Guen felt a mixture of deep pity and agonizing guilt. If I didn’t exist, perhaps Sister Murong would have married him instead. Carrying that heavy guilt, he bowed deeply before Ye Feng.
