“Alright, Brother Bai! I’ve found— Ah! My goodness! You scared the life out of me!”
While Feng Qie was being reminded to watch his step, a small plant stealthily climbed up his leg.
Before he could notice, it suddenly split open from its stem, revealing a wide maw filled with sharp teeth, poised to tear a chunk from his thigh.
Entangled by the mutated plant, Feng Qie naturally sensed the abnormality on his leg.
When he looked down and saw the gaping mouth full of razor-sharp teeth, he immediately let out a startled cry, his speed ability activating in an instant.
As his speed instantly accelerated, Feng Qie bolted forward in a frantic dash.
It was as if his backside were on fire, making him jump and twitch, desperate to shake the plant from his leg.
Fortunately, his impulsive action proved correct.
The mutated plant, flung off by his sudden burst of speed, quickly burrowed into the dense undergrowth nearby and vanished upon hitting the ground.
“This world truly has everything imaginable now! Not only have people turned into flesh-eating zombies, but even these plants, which used to only photosynthesize, can now devour humans!”
“If you had been more cautious just now, you could have avoided that. Remember to be careful from now on; we’ve already entered the botanical garden.”
“Brother Bai, since we entered this botanical garden, I haven’t seen so many mutated plants anywhere else outside! It’s enough to make your scalp tingle!”
“That’s normal. There are rare natural treasures buried here that can enhance the mutation of the virus.”
After shaking off the man-eating plant, Feng Qie immediately ran back cautiously. He patted his chest, letting out a sigh of relief, then spoke to me with a look of lingering fear on his face.
I merely offered a slight smile, then explained the situation to Feng Qie.
It wasn’t just Feng Qie; my sister and Wang Ming, who were walking beside me, had been wide-eyed with astonishment the entire time since entering the botanical garden.
They likely felt as though they were still trapped in an absurd dream, watching the plants scamper about the garden.
“Huh, Brother Bai, look at this plant. It’s so disgusting!”
“Ugh! How repulsive!”
“What in the world is this thing?”
As I observed our surroundings, Feng Qie, unable to stay still, suddenly bent down. He then pinched a palm-sized plant between his thumb and forefinger, holding it up before me.
My sister and Wang Ming, hearing Feng Qie’s words, also turned their gaze to see what this ‘disgusting plant’ looked like.
Upon seeing the plant dangling in mid-air, expressions of revulsion spread across their faces; they clearly found it disgusting as well.
When I looked closer, I noticed that in the center of the plant hung a massive tongue, disproportionate to its size, surrounded by numerous eyes.
As Feng Qie held it aloft, the eyes on the mutated plant constantly darted about, causing immense discomfort for both my sister and Wang Ming.
“Huh? Brother Bai, I noticed this mutated plant isn’t attacking me! What’s going on?”
Feng Qie held the mutated plant not just because it was repulsive, but because it hadn’t actively attacked him. Even now, it merely dangled, its tongue swaying in mid-air, which struck Feng Qie as extremely odd. He turned his questioning gaze toward me.
“Not all mutated animals and plants eat humans; they merely crave energy. In nature, there are herbivores and carnivores. Just like the one you’re holding, it typically consumes rocks, plants, and similar things as energy for survival.”
“But rocks and plants don’t contain energy that can lead to upgrades, do they?”
“Studies show they do, but not as much as is found in flesh and blood—only trace amounts. So, in the future, when zombies can’t find humans, they will also consume rocks and plants to maintain their mobility.”
“Heh heh, hearing that, they sound like robots! They need to be charged!”
“Just keep an eye on your surroundings! Be careful not to get bitten by another mutated plant.”
After my explanation cleared up their doubts, our group continued to advance swiftly.
Had this been our first time entering this perilous botanical garden, we wouldn’t have moved so quickly. We would have meticulously scouted the environment before slowly exploring forward.
However, the situation was different now. A mysterious group had already escorted a large number of survivors along this very path ahead of us.
Therefore, there was no need to fear any fatal dangers, though we still had to be extra careful of the mutated plants scurrying about. One moment of inattention, and one could easily get bitten.
“My god, there’s a leftover thigh here!”
“It seems it’s time for the great King Feng to emerge and save these people from their suffering.”
“You dare bite my ‘golden member,’ you plant? I’ll stomp you to death.”
“Haha, this plant looks so strange, like a big red nose!”
Throughout the journey, Feng Qie continued to chatter incessantly. Though annoying, his words served as an excellent distraction, alleviating the agitation in my sister and Wang Ming’s hearts.
During our trek, human limbs and severed body parts constantly appeared on the path beneath our feet. From these bloody remnants, one could imagine the ferocity of the battle that had taken place.
I was relatively unaffected, having witnessed far too many brutal scenes before my rebirth.
Feng Qie, however, possessed an incredibly carefree spirit. His current fearless demeanor was strikingly similar to the village chief’s carefree,傻儿子.
Wang Ming, on the other hand, grew increasingly worried about her mother upon seeing these severed limbs. Her tears had not ceased throughout the journey.
Even now, her eyes were red and swollen, like a frightened rabbit’s.
My sister, however, simply wasn’t accustomed to such gory sights. This surprised me, as before my rebirth, she had been the Faceless Butcher, notorious for dismembering people in gruesome ways.
Yet, after a moment’s thought, I realized that my sister hadn’t yet activated her splitting ability. Thus, she was still the pure and kind Bai Xia.
‘What exactly did my sister go through before my rebirth to become such a ruthless entity, a butcher?’
Just as I pondered what had happened to my sister before my rebirth, Feng Qie’s excited voice suddenly rang out.
“Brother Bai, there’s a whole person up ahead!”
