Chapter 72: The Nature of a Wish

Gu Xuanyu hesitated for a moment, observing Duanmu Jin’s outstretched hand of friendship. She then lowered her weapon and gently clasped hands with her.

Even through the layer of her glove, Gu Xuanyu distinctly felt the warmth emanating from Duanmu Jin’s palm.

While it wasn’t the same endearing warmth as holding Ye Qing’s tiny paw, it nonetheless eased much of her vigilance.

“Let’s talk slowly,” Duanmu Jin suggested, her brows furrowing slightly as she surveyed the scorch marks on the wall and the chaotic state of the room. “About your situation… it most likely involves Silver Moon again, doesn’t it?”

Gu Xuanyu nodded softly.

“The situation is a bit complicated,” Gu Xuanyu replied. “Could you allow us to return first, consider things, and then explain?”

With Duanmu Jin present, Ye Qing found it inconvenient to speak. The best course of action now was to get them both away from this place.

“No.”

Unexpectedly, Duanmu Jin’s refusal was remarkably decisive, a stark contrast to the amiable demeanor she had just displayed. Yet, her tone remained far from overtly harsh.

“I can grant you time to think,” she continued, “but you cannot leave. She has ties to an evil organization, doesn’t she?”

Seeing Duanmu Jin point at Ye Qing, Gu Xuanyu’s heart pounded with urgency, but she could only remain silently speechless.

“Then… let’s talk privately.”

***

It was precisely dinnertime. Despite being the mascot of an evil organization, Ye Qing sat in the Magical Girl Academy’s cafeteria, eating with several Magical Girls, a knot of unease twisting in her stomach.

Ye Qing had changed her attire. Unlike her usual casual wear, she had deliberately used her abilities to transform herself into an outfit resembling a Magical Girl’s, much like the one she had worn at An Yueying’s home that day.

She held considerable confidence in her charm, hoping this disguise would lessen and obscure their wariness of her. However, the situation seemed to be backfiring.

After reverting from her transformed state, Fading Star was a remarkably gentle and serene grey-haired girl.

Yet, she remained constantly behind Ye Qing, her faded grey eyes watching Ye Qing with an unsettling intensity that sent shivers down the latter’s spine.

Even at the dining table, the situation had not improved.

Due to the purification and excessive expenditure of magic, Liu Qingruo had fallen into a coma and was now recuperating in a specialized facility.

She would likely be unavailable for several days. Thus, the only familiar face accompanying Ye Qing was Shen Congqing.

However, judging by Shen Congqing’s expression, she didn’t seem to be any more at ease than Ye Qing herself.

“Hey, caught you.”

As Shen Congqing reached for a plate, the grey-haired girl suddenly stretched out a hand and playfully pinched her soft, smooth cheek.

She kneaded it gently, as if poking a delicious pudding with a spoon, her practiced movements suggesting this wasn’t her first time.

After reverting, Shen Congqing was noticeably taller than Fading Star, with a much more mature appearance and demeanor.

Yet, in Fading Star’s grasp, she seemed more like an adorable junior in need of pampering, a sight that left Ye Qing utterly fascinated.

Stared at curiously by the black-haired youth beside her, Shen Congqing’s pretty face flushed visibly. She quickly swatted away Fading Star’s hand, casting a resentful glance at her.

Fading Star broke into a bright smile, like a radiant little sunflower. She then sat directly opposite Ye Qing, fixing her with a pair of vacant, fish-like eyes that made Ye Qing utterly uncomfortable, her hand trembling uncontrollably even as she held her chopsticks.

“Uh… what’s your surname, if I may ask…?” Ye Qing stammered, her face tense, her small mouth babbling nonsense. “Ah, no, that’s not right… How should I address you?”

Ye Qing lightly patted her cheeks with both hands, chiding herself for her clumsy tongue, almost unable to speak coherently.

Seeing her demeanor, Ye Qing unconsciously straightened her back, sitting incredibly meekly. It was as if she feared this quiet Miss Fading Star might genuinely draw a gun and shoot her at any moment.

At the question, Fading Star put down her spoon and delicately arched her elegant brows. After a few seconds of apparent thought, she seemed to understand, and from her cherry lips, two soft words emerged.

“Luo Leng.”

She then resumed eating her rice, taking small spoonfuls, her grey eyes still fixed on Ye Qing. This intense stare left Ye Qing unsure how to even pick up her chopsticks, her own clear amber eyes drifting aimlessly.

Beside Ye Qing, Shen Congqing could only offer a sympathetic glance, clearly having experienced similar situations herself.

The three shared dinner in this peculiar atmosphere. Meanwhile, in another pristine office, Gu Xuanyu placed the notebook containing the novel on the table, slowly pushing it towards Duanmu Jin.

The golden-eyed girl remained silent, deep in thought. After a long moment, she accepted the medium, signifying Gu Xuanyu’s official acceptance as a Magical Girl under her charge.

“According to the contract, I can also grant you one wish.”

The silver-haired girl paused, slightly startled, then gently shook her head.

“I haven’t decided yet…”

Silver Moon’s words still echoed in her mind… *What pet?* What exactly did she mean?

An unsettling shadow lingered, so Gu Xuanyu had to set aside those thoughts for now and address a more pressing matter.

“So, what about Ye Qing?” she asked. “Can I wish to resolve the dark magic within her?”

“You cannot.”

Duanmu Jin met Gu Xuanyu’s gaze calmly, her tone entirely declarative as they conversed.

“A Magical Girl’s wish must center on herself,” Duanmu Jin explained.

“While I can grant you a wish, you cannot expect it to alter your own essence or allow someone else to make a choice for you. In that case, it would no longer be your wish.”

Her words were somewhat abstruse, and Gu Xuanyu frowned, appearing a little perplexed.

“Do you mean I must resolve the ‘Magical Girl’ crisis myself, without violating the ‘Magical Girl’ essence?” Gu Xuanyu clarified.

“In other words, you can only help me solve problems within the ‘Magical Girl’ framework, but you cannot allow me to escape this ‘Magical Girl’ identity?”

Gu Xuanyu tilted her head, looking at Duanmu Jin.

The latter nodded.

“I understand.”

Gu Xuanyu seemed to have a sudden realization, letting out a sigh that suggested partial comprehension.

“So my wish can only be fulfilled within the ‘Magical Girl’ framework?”

“Yes.”

“This means I need to find my own way to overcome the difficulties I face, and you can help me, but you cannot overstep your bounds and make choices for me?”

“Correct.”

Gu Xuanyu’s eyes flickered, clearly still deep in thought.

“For example,” she mused, “if I encounter a villain, you can’t directly eliminate them. You can only help me, perhaps by making the villain turn good?”

“Yes.”

Gu Xuanyu frowned, a thoughtful expression clouding her face.

“In that case… I find it somewhat difficult to grasp.”

She paused slightly, her tone growing a little subdued.

“Then, can a Magical Girl’s wish lift the curse upon me?”

“That depends on how you define ‘curse’,” Duanmu Jin replied, her voice still calm.

“What is the essence of this curse? Is it the deprivation of your freedom, or the alteration of your destiny to become a Magical Girl?”

Gu Xuanyu pondered for a moment, then shook her head.

“I don’t know…”

She looked at Duanmu Jin with a hint of bewilderment and confusion in her eyes.

“Then, can a Magical Girl’s wish release me from the responsibilities I bear?”

“What is the essence of responsibility?” Duanmu Jin’s voice remained calm. “Is it an obligation, or is it your destiny?”

Gu Xuanyu fell silent once more.

She could no longer recall when she had first become this way.

Her earliest memory seemed to begin on the day that man left.

He had betrayed her, abandoned her, and then gone on to live a happy and fulfilling life with another woman.

She, however, had been confined within a cold castle, enduring torment day after day.

‘Was this her destiny?’

She did not know.

She only knew that, from the very beginning, she had never had the right to choose.

‘If that’s the case, then I’ll accept it.’

Gu Xuanyu took a deep breath, a determined glint sparking in her eyes.

“Then, can a Magical Girl’s wish make me powerful?”

“Power is relative,” Duanmu Jin stated, her voice still serene.

“Great power often comes with great responsibility. Are you truly prepared to bear all of it?”

Gu Xuanyu fell silent.

She knew Duanmu Jin was right.

Great power often came with great responsibility.

And she was not yet ready to bear all of it.

“I understand.”

Gu Xuanyu’s voice was subdued.

“I will consider it carefully.”

Duanmu Jin nodded, a hint of approval in her eyes.

“Very good. You truly are a clever child.”

Gu Xuanyu remained silent, simply lowering her head.

She knew that everything Duanmu Jin said was true.

“Then, can a Magical Girl’s wish grant me happiness?”

“Happiness is an internal feeling,” Duanmu Jin replied, her voice still calm.

“Happiness is not given by others; it is created by yourself. Are you truly prepared to create your own happiness?”

Gu Xuanyu fell silent.

Happiness was an internal feeling.

She didn’t know if she was truly ready to create her own happiness.

“Then, can a Magical Girl’s wish grant me love?”

“Love is a matter between two people,” Duanmu Jin replied, her voice still calm.

“Love cannot be obtained through one-sided effort alone. Are you truly prepared to give, to receive, and to experience love?”

Gu Xuanyu fell silent.

Love was a matter between two people.

She didn’t know if she was truly ready to give, to receive, and to experience love.

“Then, can a Magical Girl’s wish grant me friendship?”

“Friendship is reciprocal,” Duanmu Jin replied, her voice still calm.

“Friendship cannot be obtained through one-sided effort alone. Are you truly prepared to give, to receive, and to experience friendship?”

Gu Xuanyu fell silent.

Friendship was reciprocal.

She didn’t know if she was truly ready to give, to receive, and to experience friendship.

“Then, can a Magical Girl’s wish grant me kinship?”

“Kinship is a bond of blood,” Duanmu Jin replied, her voice still calm.

“Kinship cannot be obtained through one-sided effort alone. Are you truly prepared to give, to receive, and to experience kinship?”

Gu Xuanyu fell silent.

Kinship was a bond of blood.

She didn’t know if she was truly ready to give, to receive, and to experience kinship.

“You could try to play some word games,” Duanmu Jin added, “but I advise against it, as a misinterpreted wish could lead to far more severe consequences.”

Listening to Duanmu Jin’s words, Gu Xuanyu’s gaze fell in disappointment, her silvery-white lashes casting shadows beneath her eyes.

“I might need some time to think,” she murmured.

Duanmu Jin nodded slightly.

“Indeed, you should consider it carefully. Moreover, your little girlfriend’s situation is quite troublesome. Our tolerance for those carrying dark magic is extremely low.

I can help you conceal this for now, but it doesn’t mean I can maintain it indefinitely…”

Then, as if a thought had suddenly struck her, Duanmu Jin abruptly lifted her gaze to the conflicted Gu Xuanyu.

“However, there is another feasible method,” she offered, “one you might be willing to try.”

Gu Xuanyu blinked, a little bewildered.

“What is it?”

“Have her become a Magical Girl as well. Her dark magic can be suppressed by pure magic, and then all problems will resolve themselves.”

Duanmu Jin’s suggestion sounded incredibly tempting, yet Gu Xuanyu felt a surge of anxiety, instinctively clutching her sleeve.

“Becoming a Magical Girl isn’t something that can just be ‘said’ into existence, is it…?”

“It’s at least worth a try, isn’t it?”

Gu Xuanyu paused, then found herself involuntarily fantasizing.

‘If Ye Qing truly succeeded in becoming a Magical Girl, it would mean there would be no more barriers between them. They could fully open their hearts to each other, share the same worries, and never be separated again…’

Before her thoughts could fully coalesce, Gu Xuanyu nodded vigorously.

“Thank you.”

But at the same time, she silently apologized to Ye Qing in her heart:

‘I’m sorry, Ye Qing, this is a small selfishness of mine…’
