Chapter 31: The Lamp in the Dark

The Valley Master merely sighed deeply upon hearing this, “It is not just a matter of the poison. At this moment, his heart meridian is severely damaged, and I fear his Dao heart is unstable, making it easy for him to fall into depravity and lose his sanity.”

He lowered his eyes to look at the person in Shen Shengqing’s arms, “Let us take him back first.”

Wei Nianqin remained silent as she stepped forward and supported Mu An, trying to pry him from Shen Shengqing’s embrace, but she met with stiff resistance.

Looking at Shen Shengqing’s hands tightly locked around Mu An, she fell silent for a moment before resolutely prying them open.

The deceased had already passed away; if Shen Shengqing were to wake up and immediately see a cold corpse in his arms, he would likely be driven to madness by the shock.

Wei Nianqin scooped up Mu An’s body, then turned around to command Yunnan You to lift Shen Shengqing.

Fula Inn—

As night fell, a candle burned silently, its flame flickering.

Within the white gauze curtains and upon the blue-green bedding, the unconscious man’s brow was tightly knit, cold sweat streaming down continuously, his face as pale as snow.

Shen Shengqing’s consciousness was trapped within a vast, white mist, where he repeatedly relived the moment of Mu An’s death.

He had swapped positions with Mu An, yet it had ended up causing Mu An to be struck by the arrow and die.

In his dreams, Mu An stared at him, asking over and over, “Why did you harm me?”

“Shizun, your heart is so cruel!”

The youth, spitting fresh blood, questioned him with bloodshot eyes.

“If not for you, how could I have died?”

“An’an hurts so much…”

“So much blood… Shizun, An’an is so scared… Shizun.”

Shen Shengqing wiped helplessly at the blood constantly spilling from the youth’s mouth, his heart aching as if pierced by a thousand knives, yet he could not utter a single sound.

Yunnan You watched by the bedside, mechanically scooping up the medicinal decoction and slowly pouring it into Shen Shengqing’s mouth.

Suddenly, he saw a warm tear slide down the corner of Shen Shengqing’s eye.

Yunnan You froze for a moment, and after a short while, he also raised his hand to wipe his own eyes.

Shen Shengqing fell into a prolonged coma, and the group carried him directly to Medicine God Valley.

Every day, they regularly administered acupuncture, fed him medicine, and channeled their energy to heal his wounds.

Finally, just as the conflict between the demon clan and the human race was about to erupt, Shen Shengqing woke up.

Upon waking, his eyes were devoid of life and his voice was raspy, yet he did nothing but call out for An’an continuously.

Having no other choice, the Valley Master led him to the ice bed, allowing him to see Mu An’s perfectly preserved body.

Barefoot, Shen Shengqing took step after step onto the freezing floor, his disheveled black hair now somehow streaked with many strands of silver.

He leaned down close to the ice bed and reached out, gently touching Mu An’s completely bloodless face.

The piercing cold sent a sharp pang of sorrow through his heart.

He suddenly laughed, laughing even as tears streamed down his face, “An’an, walk a bit slower.”

He leaned further down, pressing a light kiss onto Mu An’s lips, his movements both devout and obsessive, “Shizun is coming to make amends to you right now.”

“Shizun will never leave you alone.”

Shen Shengqing suddenly gathered a weak spark of spiritual energy in his hand, preparing to pierce his own throat with it.

The Valley Master’s pupils contracted sharply, and he abruptly unleashed his spiritual energy to bind Shen Shengqing’s hand, feeling a sudden chill run down his spine.

The person before him was no longer the Shen Shengqing he once knew.

“Have you lost your mind! You would throw away your hundreds of years of cultivation for a single disciple!”

“Cultivation… what meaning is there to it?”

Shen Shengqing’s eyes were hollow and vacant, staring directly at Mu An’s lifeless body.

The Valley Master’s heart was filled with shock and uncertainty; on one hand, he was stunned by the taboo love between Shen Shengqing and his disciple, and on the other hand, he was shaken by the sheer depth of Shen Shengqing’s devotion.

Ultimately, the Valley Master relented, “Resurrecting the dead is not entirely impossible.”

Shen Shengqing’s expression froze for a moment, and he abruptly turned to look at the Valley Master.

Back when Shen Shengqing was still at the Golden Core stage, the Valley Master had met him once.

At that time, Shen Shengqing was ruthless and reticent, possessing an innate, unyielding pride; the Valley Master had predicted back then that he would surely achieve an exceptionally high realm of cultivation in the future.

Yet at this moment, the almost pleading look in the man’s eyes made his mind drift in disbelief.

“The City Lord of Muyan City once possessed a Soul-Gathering Lantern, which was previously seized by Qing Ya. After Qing Ya met his demise, Wei Nianqin took the initiative to borrow the Soul-Gathering Lantern to gather your disciple’s shattered soul.”

“If your disciple’s soul still exists in this world, there is a chance for this lantern to gather it back. When that time comes, his physical body must be nourished with spiritual medicine so his soul can return to its proper place and regain life.”

A look of madness unconsciously surfaced on Shen Shengqing’s face, his eyes fixed tightly on the Valley Master, “Where is the lantern? The lantern—”

The Valley Master hurriedly produced the Soul-Gathering Lantern.

Shen Shengqing accepted it with utmost care, his fingers tightening as he stared at the swirling cloud of white mist within.

“This lantern requires a daily infusion of spiritual energy. You must recover your body as quickly as possible to be able to sustain it.”

Shen Shengqing nodded repeatedly, his voice hoarse, “What spiritual medicines are required to nourish An’an’s body?”

“With your current state, telling you would be of no use,” the Valley Master sneered softly.

Shen Shengqing froze for an instant.

Examining his own body internally, his spiritual energy was still obstructed and could not be channeled as usual, causing a sudden panic to grip his heart.

In this state, how could he possibly save An’an?

Without any hesitation, he bent his knees to kneel, which startled the Valley Master into stepping forward quickly to support him.

“I beg the Valley Master for your assistance. In the future, Shengqing will surely repay this immense debt of gratitude in any way possible.”

Looking at the flicker of hope reignited in Shen Shengqing’s eyes, the Valley Master’s heart was filled with complex emotions.

The claim that the Soul-Gathering Lantern could gather shattered souls was merely a rumor; to this day, no one had ever actually used it to resurrect anyone.

Everything he had said was merely to buy time, giving Shen Shengqing a reason to willingly accept treatment.

“You only need to recover your body and go fight the demon clan. That will serve as both avenging your disciple and repaying your debt to me.”

At the mention of the demon clan, Shen Shengqing’s eyes grew as dark and murky as ink; Qing Ya and the Demon Lord behind him all deserved to die!

Yet who deserved to die more than himself? If not for him, how could Mu An have died?

Time flowed like water, and the years flew by.

The bright night-luminescent pearl on the ceiling cast cold glints off the ice surface, and the entire cave dwelling was built entirely of freezing ice, its chill biting to the bone.

A massive ice bed rested quietly in the deepest part of the main hall.

Thick white gauze curtains completely blocked the view inside. At the head of the bed, a single lamp emitted a soft, gentle glow.

The person inside the bed had skin as white as snow, dressed in green robes as he lay quietly, his dark hair cascading like a waterfall, lifeless yet serene.

Not far beside him lay a man in white robes with snow-white hair and a cold, aloof expression. His eyes were like a pitch-black rainy night curtain, staring unblinkingly at the youth beside him without even a blink.

He didn’t even dare to reach out and touch the other’s body, worrying it would affect the preservation state.

He lay there quietly for a very long time, as if he had already looked at this countless times, until physical exhaustion forced him to slowly close his bloodshot eyes.

Suddenly, the green-robed youth’s eyelashes trembled slightly, and he slowly opened his clear, dark eyes.

Mu An blinked sluggishly. “System, have we arrived at the second world yet? Why is it so dark?”

Yet there was no response from the system in his mind, leaving him puzzled.

Mu An stiffly raised his own hand and slowly sat up. “What kind of ghost body is this, so stiff.”

With that, he turned his head and locked eyes with a pair of bloodshot, utterly astonished eyes.

“Shizun!” Mu An cried out in shock.
