Chapter 45: A Rose, a Camera, and Growing Obsession

Upon returning to the university, Mu An happily received warm greetings from his counselor.

“Mu An, even though the university doesn’t have strict requirements for you in your senior year, you can’t just ask someone to attend classes on your behalf every single time.”

Mu An scratched his fingers guiltily, “Teacher, I was wrong. I won’t do it again.”

“Prepare for next week’s exams. If you fail a course, you’ll have to take makeup exams, which will affect your subsequent graduation thesis and internship…”

After listening to the counselor’s earnest and well-meaning lecture, Mu An halted his star-chasing footsteps and began to focus entirely on his exams and graduation thesis.

Even the update frequency of the “Chief Manager Mu Mu” account became unstable.

Watching Mu An’s increasingly low update frequency, Jiang Yan grew more and more anxious, taking out his phone every day to check if the other’s account had updated.

From time to time, he would even post a selfie on Weibo just to test if Mu An was still following him.

Fortunately, even though Mu An rarely updated his videos anymore, his speed in liking Weibo posts was as fast as ever, as though he was using some cheat code.

After finishing the filming of “Heartless Sword Villa,” Jiang Yan finally found some rare free time and returned to the urban village where he used to live.

Nighttime.

A few sparse stars hung on the canopy of the sky, and bright lights shone from the high-rise buildings, yet the walkways were completely dim, save for the illumination radiating from the street-side shops.

Jiang Yan made his way to the downstairs of Mu An’s apartment.

Tilting his head up slightly to look at the faintly lit apartment, the surging longing in his heart caused his heartbeat to accelerate abnormally.

He really wanted to see An’an.

But he had no reason to meet with An’an; he could not even be certain if An’an truly liked him.

After pondering for a long time, he walked up to Mu An’s door and slowly knocked a few times.

“Wait a moment!”

The sound of a boy’s footsteps came from inside the room.

Jiang Yan lowered his head slightly, and as the footsteps drew closer, he slowly exhaled a breath of hot air.

“Who is it?”

Mu An opened the door, only to find no one outside.

In the empty corridor, there was only the sound of the wind blowing fallen leaves.

“Did they get the wrong door?”

Mu An looked around in confusion, failing to notice the tiny red dot flashing on the potted plant by his door.

By the stairwell, Jiang Yan leaned against the wall, silently watching the surveillance footage transmitting to his phone.

The boy sported messy hair, looking as though he had just finished a shower and his hair hadn’t completely dried yet, staring around with an innocent and bewildered expression, adorable as a domesticated kitten.

Unable to find anyone, Mu An gave up and closed the door.

Jiang Yan’s lips curved up slowly, his fingers caressing the image on the surveillance screen as the unease in his heart was gradually smoothed away.

This way, even if An’an didn’t come to see him, he would still be able to know whether An’an was obediently staying at home.

Early the next morning.

Mu An opened his door, only to find a beautiful rose tucked into his doorplate.

He checked the surrounding doorplates in confusion, but discovered that no one else had one; only his door did.

“A thief scouting the place?”

He let out a cold sneer and tossed the flower of unknown origin into a passing trash can.

“Thinking that by disguising it as a romantic flower, I wouldn’t take it down? You underestimate me!”

If no one had knocked on his door yesterday, Mu An wouldn’t have been suspicious.

But someone deliberately knocked, and the very next day a marker appeared—it was clearly a thief scouting his apartment.

After thinking for a moment, Mu An returned inside and packed all his valuables into his backpack.

Evening.

Jiang Yan finished his day’s work, poured himself a glass of red wine, and opened the surveillance feed, preparing to soothe his exhausted soul.

However, the moment the feed opened, the first thing he heard was a voice that did not belong to Mu An.

Chen Tong carried a bag of barbecue skewers and wrapped an arm around Mu An’s shoulder, boasting shamelessly, “With me here, you can rest assured!”

“I will definitely protect you.”

Hearing this, the red wine glass in Jiang Yan’s hand screeched sharply as he rubbed it.

Mu An didn’t push away his good friend’s arm around his shoulder, smoothly opening the door, “Alright, you’ve said that eight hundred times already!”

In the morning, Chen Tong had heard that his place had been scouted by a thief and insisted on coming over to protect him.

He claimed that in case they encountered the criminal, the two of them could shout him down, making the thief too afraid to covet a single man’s apartment again.

“If you ask me, it’s too dangerous for you to live alone. Why don’t I move in and share the rent with you?”

Chen Tong said as he closed the front door.

Mu An’s response was cut off behind the closed door, while a dark shadow crept into Jiang Yan’s eyes.

He remembered this person; he had spent the night at Mu An’s place before.

Out of nowhere, suddenly talking about wanting to protect Mu An—his real goal was actually to become An’an’s roommate, wasn’t it?

Jiang Yan could not hold back any longer.

Grabbing his coat, he drove back to the urban village.

But when he arrived downstairs at Mu An’s building, he suddenly woke up to reality; with his current status, he could not even appear in front of Mu An.

He slowly leaned against the corner of the wall, looking up at the light on the top floor.

What were the two of them doing in the room?

Would that man find an excuse to deliberately lean against An’an?

Would he do something to An’an?

In the end, he sought out the landlord of the building, “The tenant in 302 is my cousin. Our family does not want him sharing an apartment with someone else, afraid he might meet the wrong kind of people.”

He added the landlord’s WeChat and sent a red packet, “If you find him sharing the apartment with someone else, please stop him using the contract clause that forbids unauthorized additional tenants as an excuse.”

The landlord had originally been too lazy to bother, but upon seeing the red packet on her phone, her eyes lit up. “I understand. As parents caring for your child’s safety, of course I’m going to help out.”

Auntie Landlord nodded happily and agreed, “I’ll go tell him right now!”

With that, she cast a sneaky glance at Jiang Yan’s tightly wrapped face, getting the distinct impression that he looked much more like a malicious bad guy.

Yet Jiang Yan was able to recite Mu An’s phone number, so he had to be an acquaintance of Mu An’s.

Seeing the suspicion in the landlord’s eyes, Jiang Yan didn’t linger any longer, turning to walk out of the building. “Please trouble yourself not to tell Mu An that I’ve been here; I’m afraid he’ll throw a tantrum if he finds out.”

The landlord nodded perfunctorily, got up, walked over to Mu An’s door, and banged on it with a massive commotion.

“Could it be a thief?” Chen Tong grabbed a broom from the side without a second thought and strode over.

Mu An was too late to stop him, and could only hurry to follow.

“Who is it?!” Chen Tong jerked the door open, slammed the broom hard against the floor with a sharp crack, and roared viciously.

Mu An poked his head out from behind him, and the moment he saw Auntie Landlord at the door, he hurriedly pushed Chen Tong aside.

“It’s the landlord!” Mu An offered an awkward smile to Auntie Landlord, who had been startled by the entrance. “Is there something you need, Auntie?”

The landlord blinked slowly, suddenly feeling that Jiang Yan’s worry about his “cousin” running around messing with strangers actually made some sense.

She glanced sideways at Chen Tong, who was still holding a broom, feeling that he didn’t look like a very good person.

“The contract stipulates that unauthorized additional roommates are not allowed!”

Mu An froze for a moment, exchanged a look with Chen Tong, and quickly explained, “No, no, no! He’s just here to hang out and is heading back tomorrow; we’re not rooming together.”

The landlord swept a skeptical look over the two of them, remembering Jiang Yan’s admonition, “Young people should still mind their safety and not worry their families.”

Mu An was left completely baffled by her words. Until they sent the landlord off, both of them remained somewhat dazed.

From start to finish, neither of them had any intention of rooming together. Chen Tong had only been running his mouth—after all, the room wasn’t large and only had a single bed, with Mu An always making him sleep on the sofa, so there was no way he would agree to share the rent.

Chen Tong pointed at himself in confusion, “Am I visiting too frequently? She can misunderstand even this.”

“Once every two months—is that frequent?” Mu An hesitated.

“Forget it, the soccer match is about to start. Let’s watch the game, watch the game!” Chen Tong shoved Mu An into the room with his carefree attitude.

Little did they know, the moment the door closed, a figure quietly materialized behind it.

Jiang Yan’s eyes were slightly red as he stared dead at the doorknob.

How could An’an share a room with another man?
