Chapter 36: A Familiar Face in a Dark Alley

Under the dim moonlight, the newcomer was clad in an extremely bright pink coat, with overly long bangs obscuring his eyes, faintly revealing a hint of his facial contours, while a white face mask covered the lower half of his face.

He looked down at them from a superior height, holding a dustpan in one hand and a broom in the other; far from looking clumsy, he instead exuded the air of a heroic swordsman holding dual blades.

Jiang Yan stared at Mu An, completely dazed.

How could anyone be this beautiful?

Staring at Jiang Yan’s familiar face, Mu An was even more shocked into speechless silence.

The slender, sword-like eyebrows, the cold outline of his eyes, and even those pale lips looked exactly like Shizun’s.

‘System, who is this person?’

He asked in shock within his mind.

The system was clearly also shocked by Jiang Yan’s appearance, pausing for a few seconds before replying, [He is the male lead of this world—Jiang Yan. He is not Shen Shengqing.]

Mu An’s eyelashes trembled slightly.

Glancing at Jiang Yan’s blood-stained hand, he threw down the dustpan, grabbed the other’s elbow with one hand, and pulled him up from the ground.

“Great Hero, we didn’t provoke you, did we? You…”

The leader of the thugs supported his two companions as they rose, his eyes full of wariness.

Before he could finish his sentence, a broom came flying violently before his eyes.

The head of the broom slammed straight into the wall with a dull thud, causing a small patch of wall plaster to rustle and fall off.

The burly man had no doubt that if it had been a sword, it would be firmly impaled in the wall right now.

In an instant, the three men stood up straight in terror.

Mu An gave Jiang Yan a gentle nudge, “If you want compensation or something, speak up quickly.”

He did not want to get too involved in Jiang Yan’s business.

At this moment, he was only glad that he was wearing a face mask; otherwise, if the male lead recognized his identity in the future, it might affect his mission.

With this thought in mind, he lowered his head slightly, hiding his eyes in the shadows.

Jiang Yan stared at Mu An with bright, shining eyes, his heart starting to race uncontrollably.

How could this person be so handsome?

However, Mu An kept his head lowered, appearing quite impatient.

Jiang Yan could not help but avert his gaze to look at the burly men, his voice suddenly turning cold and stern.

“Su Jicheng sent you?”

His tone was not a question but a statement of certainty.

The thugs exchanged glances.

Mu An quietly took a step forward, and they immediately retreated, speaking hesitantly, “We don’t know. We were all contacted anonymously.”

A flash of disgust crossed Jiang Yan’s eyes, “Aside from telling you to slash my face, what else did he have you do?”

“He also said to break your legs so you could never dance again,” the burly man confessed directly, realizing that they would likely have a hard time escaping if they didn’t tell the truth now.

The leader of the thugs glanced at the pink-clad youth behind Jiang Yan, his eyes full of wariness.

Could this person be Jiang Yan’s friend?

They had been lurking around for these past few days but had never seen him approach Jiang Yan.

Sensing his gaze, Jiang Yan instinctively took a step forward, blocking their view.

For some reason, seeing the burly man staring at that person caused a surge of baseless frustration to rise within his chest.

With lowered eyelashes, he shifted his expression, putting into use the fan-service tutorials he had learned over the past few months.

He looked at Mu An with a pair of clear and innocent eyes, as if the other man were his sole salvation, yet the words that came out of his mouth were incredibly jarring.

“Can I hit them?”

Mu An was stunned for a moment and nodded hesitantly; this was his first time seeing such an expression on a face that looked exactly like Shizun’s.

Those people had beaten Jiang Yan, and based on the blood all over Jiang Yan’s hand, it was perfectly reasonable for him to want to hit them back.

Receiving Mu An’s approval, Jiang Yan’s heart stirred, but just as he reached out with his bloody hand to grab the dustpan, Mu An stopped him.

“Your hand is injured. Let me do it.”

Mu An stepped forward, disassembled the dustpan, and held up the metal handle in front of the thugs.

“One leg for each of you. I won’t overdo it—just a fracture. Does that sound good to you?”

Cold sweat poured down the burly men.

How could anyone say such brutal words so calmly?

While they were hesitating over whether to resist, Mu An jabbed the stick into the ground, “Or, you can pay some money.”

The thugs were startled, while Jiang Yan continued to stare at Mu An’s back with bright, sparkling eyes.

Seeing that Jiang Yan didn’t object, Mu An simply spoke up, “The minimum cost of treating a bone fracture is 1,500 to 3,000. For three people, that’s about ten thousand. Plus, you injured my guy and his hand is bleeding, so another ten thousand in compensation—that makes twenty thousand total.”

“Do you want broken bones and disfigurement, or do you want to pay?”

Mu An didn’t dare to ask for too much, fearing that they wouldn’t be able to produce it; after all, those who came out to do this kind of dirty work were usually short on cash.

The thugs exchanged looks, huddled together to consult, and in the end actually reneged, launching a coordinated attack at Mu An, apparently believing that three of them might not lose to a single person.

Jiang Yan’s pupils dilated, and he wanted to shield Mu An, but Mu An found him in the way and shoved him aside.

Within a few moves, Mu An beat the three burly men until they were wailing on the ground.

Mu An was thoroughly annoyed and glared at Jiang Yan, “Call the police.”

Jiang Yan nodded repeatedly, while the burly men on the side panicked and begged continuously not to call the police, but in the end, they were still escorted onto a police cruiser by the police officers.

Mu An had originally wanted to resolve the matter privately with the thugs because he didn’t want to expose his identity before the mission even began, but they had clearly failed to appreciate his leniency, leaving him with no choice but to let the official procedures take their course.

After finishing the police statement, Mu An learned that those burly men actually had criminal records; this counted as a repeat offense, meaning they would be eating prison food for a long time.

As for the mastermind behind the scenes, the police had also locked onto them for investigation.

Stepping out of the police station, Mu An carried his shopping bag and let out a deep sigh.

“Mu An…” A clear, resonant voice sounded from behind him.

Mu An thought to himself that he was done for.

Now that the male lead knew his name, it meant he had no choice but to start maintaining his character setting.

Seeing that the other person was still wearing a face mask, head lowered, and looking entirely unwilling to converse with anyone, Jiang Yan felt a pang of disappointment.

“Thank you so much for today. If it weren’t for you, I might have…”

“Shut up!” Mu An picked up the original host’s persona, putting on an irate expression.

“You’re such a grown man with zero survival skills, yet you still walk down dark alleys at night, making me this late to get home.”

He brandished his shopping bag at Jiang Yan. “The chilled beer is room-temperature now, and you’ve ruined my wonderful evening.”

According to the original host’s plan, he should be sipping fine wine and watching his favorite internet celebrity’s livestream right now, instead of freezing in the cold wind outside.

Jiang Yan’s eyelashes fluttered under the shouting, a wave of inexplicable panic welling up in his chest. “I’m sorry… I’ll buy you some more beer as compensation.”

“Don’t! Just stay away from me from now on!” Mu An rolled his eyes at him without hesitation, turning to walk toward a ride-share car waiting nearby.

Jiang Yan tried to follow him inside, but Mu An blocked him with one hand, shutting him out. “Trying to hitch a free ride? Book your own!”

Jiang Yan said anxiously, “I can transfer the money to you, we live in the same area…”

“No need.” Mu An refused coldly, lifting his chin at the driver. “Driver, let’s go.”

“Got it.” The driver was equally straightforward, zipping away and leaving Jiang Yan stranded in place.

In the cold wind of the frigid night, the man stood hugging his arms, looking utterly wretched and desolate.

Yet Mu An didn’t have the bandwidth to care; after telling the driver to wake him upon arrival at his destination, he closed his eyes to catnap.

“System, wahhhh, I think I stuck my nose into things I shouldn’t have. Quick, give me the mission details, I need to see how to fix this.”
