Mu An shook his head and offered her a smile, “I’m going to be Jiang Yan’s assistant.”
Chen Xi looked up at the sky, “It’s almost evening, isn’t it a bit too late to be daydreaming?”
“Tsk! Don’t underestimate me! I’m going to find the floor supervisor and resign right now.” Mu An’s eyes carried a smile he couldn’t hide, looking entirely pleased with himself.
Chen Xi felt a twinge of anxiety and hurried to follow him, “You’re really resigning? No way! If you leave, who am I going to have lunch with?”
Chen Xi didn’t believe for a second that Mu An could become an assistant, but she was afraid that if Mu An quit, she’d have no one to vent to while working alone.
The two found the floor supervisor on the way, only to see him looking extremely agitated.
“Brother Yang, what’s wrong?” Chen Xi asked in confusion.
Brother Yang glanced at the two of them, ultimately locking his gaze on Mu An, “Where did you go just now?”
Mu An felt a bit guilty, “To the restroom, and while I was at it, I slacked off a bit.”
He scratched his head, “Brother Yang, I want to resign. I don’t think I’m very suited for this line of work.”
At these words, Brother Yang’s face darkened instantly. He let out a cold sneer, looking Mu An up and down.
“The restroom? I didn’t find you there just now. Speak the truth! Did you mess with the props?”
“What props?” Mu An looked blank.
“The prop umbrella used by Jiang Yan was spilled with osmanthus water. Now he says he’s allergic to it, and our prop team is going to be held responsible.” Brother Yang’s tone was nasty, “I’ve been looking for you all over the place, and now you want to resign? Are you feeling guilty because you’re a thief?”
Mu An knit his brows tightly. He had assumed that Jiang Yan saying he was allergic was just an excuse to send the makeup artist away; he hadn’t realized he was actually allergic.
Facing Brother Yang’s suspicious gaze, Mu An quickly explained, “I really didn’t do it! I have no grudge against him!”
“Exactly! How could it be Mu An? Mu An is Jiang Yan’s number one fan!” Chen Xi quickly tried to clarify for him.
“That means nothing to me!” Brother Yang grabbed Mu An’s hand, attempting to drag him toward the director, “If you don’t come clean about your whereabouts, you can go to jail!”
Mu An yanked himself free from the other’s grasp, rubbing his reddened wrist, “What’s with the handsy behavior! Just because you couldn’t find me means I did it? I could just as well say your dad did it! I can’t find your dad either!”
“You!” Brother Yang pointed a finger straight at Mu An’s forehead in fury, “Is this the quality of a university student?”
Mu An was instantly enraged, his heart racing, “What do you mean by the ‘quality’ of a university student! What’s wrong with my quality? What evidence do you have to just go around grabbing me!”
“I told you I didn’t do it. Instead of clinging to me, you’d better look and see if anyone recorded the incident!”
The argument eventually attracted the attention of quite a few people.
Seeing this, the director walked over with a group of people, his gaze sweeping over Mu An, “Is he the one who messed with the props?”
“I didn’t!” Mu An interrupted Brother Yang’s words before he could even utter them, “I just went to the restroom and wasn’t at the scene. How does that make it my doing?”
“I checked the restroom; you weren’t there!” Brother Yang immediately retorted.
“Because I didn’t go to the public restroom. I went to Jiang Yan’s lounge.” Mu An was forced to tell the truth.
Jiang Yan hadn’t exposed him for hiding in the restroom back then, so he assumed he wouldn’t harm him over such a trivial matter now.
Hearing this, Chen Xi’s eyes widened in sheer shock.
Was her fan buddy really a normal star-chaser? Going to his idol’s lounge to use the restroom while he was away—was it really just to use the restroom?
The director knit his brow, “You went to Jiang Yan’s lounge without his permission?”
Mu An’s eyes flickered, “Regardless, I didn’t touch the props.”
The director scanned Mu An with a sharp gaze, and Mu An met his look without any guilt.
“Director, what are you all gathering around for?” A cold, clear voice instantly shattered the stagnant atmosphere.
Jiang Yan was wearing a mask, clad in a plain blue hoodie with a backpack on his back, clearly intending to leave the set.
His gaze swept inadvertently over Mu An, who was surrounded by the crowd.
“Jiang Yan, you’ve come at just the right time. This young man says he went to your lounge. Check and see if anything is missing.” The director pointed at Mu An.
Mu An’s face darkened, a gloomy shade filling his eyes. Although he had indeed gone there to steal things, being treated like a common thief still hurt.
Jiang Yan lowered his eyelids, a flash of darkness passing through his eyes, “Director, I think there’s been a misunderstanding. He is my newly hired assistant.”
“He went to my lounge with my permission.”
The moment these words fell, everyone looked between Mu An and Jiang Yan with astonished eyes.
How could a lowly general laborer suddenly become Jiang Yan’s assistant?
“An assistant!” Brother Yang’s eyes widened, “He’s just a laborer; how could he be your assistant?”
Jiang Yan, assuming Mu An hadn’t resigned yet, spoke first, “I just poached him. I’m terribly sorry; he won’t be coming to work for you starting tomorrow.”
Brother Yang was speechless, and Chen Xi immediately followed up, “Mu An just came to resign, but Brother Yang thought Mu An was acting guilty!”
“Acting guilty?” Jiang Yan looked at Mu An, whose face was flushed with anger, his own mood souring as well.
“An’an is incapable of doing bad things. Did you all misunderstand something?”
That single “An’an” startled Mu An so much that he raised his eyes to look at Jiang Yan.
Are we really that close?!
Seeing this, Brother Yang’s eyelid twitched. Someone personally defended by Jiang Yan couldn’t possibly be trying to frame him. He let out an awkward laugh, “Apologies, it seems I misunderstood.”
Jiang Yan’s eyes turned slightly cold, “Next time, don’t make things difficult for someone so easily without evidence.”
Brother Yang nodded repeatedly, turning back to offer Mu An a smirking, groveling apology.
In his heart, he assumed Mu An must have some kind of relationship with Jiang Yan; having offended him, he feared he might be made life difficult for during the remaining shoot.
Mu An felt angry inside, but with so many people watching, and considering he would be working as Jiang Yan’s assistant moving forward, if he proved unreasonable despite being in the right, it wouldn’t be good if some malicious person posted it online to frame Jiang Yan.
He could only nod slightly, accepting Brother Yang’s apology.
Jiang Yan stared at Brother Yang with dissatisfied eyes, silently taking mental note of the man.
“An’an, call me after you finish up; we’ll discuss the contract details.” Jiang Yan’s eyes curved slightly with boundless softness.
Mu An was actually somewhat afraid of Jiang Yan in his heart, but constrained by his persona, he nodded excitedly with an expression of pure delight on his face.
It was only when Jiang Yan and the director had left that Mu An restrained his expression, casting a glance at Brother Yang, “Pay me my wages, I’m quitting.”
Brother Yang nodded with a smile, “Rest assured, I misunderstood you just now. I’ll settle your wages by the day and send it over, without deducting any breach of contract fees. Please look out for each other on set in the future!”
After Brother Yang finished speaking, seeing no good look from Mu An, he found an excuse to leave, leaving behind Chen Xi, whose eyes were practically filled with stars.
“Heavens! How on earth did you do that?! You actually got Jiang Yan to agree to make you his assistant!”
Mu An raised his eyebrows slightly, putting on airs as he straightened his collar, “My charm, my educational background—isn’t becoming an assistant only natural?”
“Oh, please.” Chen Xi laughed and nudged him, “Be honest, how did you pitch yourself?”
She also wanted to apply to be her goddess’s assistant and spend every waking moment together~
Mu An felt inexplicably guilty; he truly didn’t know how to explain it.
Even he hadn’t figured out how he had suddenly been hired as Jiang Yan’s assistant.
Facing Chen Xi’s expectant gaze, he could only confess, “Jiang Yan took the initiative to invite me to be his assistant. I didn’t do anything.”
“Huh?” Chen Xi’s gaze lingered on Mu An’s naturally handsome features.
It didn’t seem entirely impossible. If Jiang Yan were someone who valued looks, hiring Mu An as an assistant because of his face wasn’t completely out of the question.
After quitting his job, Mu An walked out of the filming location feeling relieved. He touched the business card Jiang Yan had handed him inside his coat pocket.
He really didn’t want to call the other party in his heart—proof that a person truly shouldn’t do guilty deeds.
Right now, whenever he thought about sharing a space with Jiang Yan, he felt terrified, worried that Jiang Yan might suddenly drop a line like, “You’re the one who stabbed me, aren’t you?”
