Chapter 28: Parting Approaches

The cave was cold and damp; even though fire crystals had been used to decorate and warm the bed frame, Shen Shengqing still felt cold.

Shen Shengqing could clearly feel his physical condition deteriorating day by day; at first, he had merely been unable to speak, but recently he had grown increasingly lethargic and weak.

He could not help but let out a cough.

Mu An rushed to his side upon hearing the sound and gently fed him a medicinal pill, but the medicine, after all, only treated the symptoms and not the root cause.

Shen Shengqing fell silent for a long time, then gestured to Mu An for paper and a brush.

[An’an, my body might need to be looked at by a medical cultivator.]

Mu An froze for a moment, looking at the handwriting on the white paper that had lost its past strength, and the hand hanging at his side clenched slightly.

“You want to leave me again, don’t you!”

Mu An roughly turned Shen Shengqing’s face, forcing him to meet his gaze.

“Do you think I am so foolish that I would let you contact anyone else? You might as well save yourself these little tricks!”

Mu An flung Shen Shengqing away, his eyes rimmed with red in a perfect picture of betrayal, and swept out of the room with a flick of his sleeve, utterly disregarding Shen Shengqing’s feelings.

In his anxiety, Shen Shengqing coughed a few more times, clutching the bedpost and breathing heavily for a long while before his racing heart finally calmed down.

He wanted to explain to Mu An that he had no intention of running away.

But by the time he caught up to the living area, Mu An had already left the cave, his whereabouts unknown.

Staring at the empty cave dwelling, no wind from the outside could blow in, yet his heart felt utterly cold and damp.

Did An’an love him?

If he loved him, how could he show so little concern for his health?

Unwilling to see Mu An’s angry face again, Shen Shengqing resolved never to mention it again.

Supporting himself on the armrest, he sat down slowly, yet could not help but cough once more.

After he finished coughing, he noticed threads of blood on his handkerchief.

His eyelashes trembled, and he fell into a long, silent contemplation.

Pricking his fingertip, he used a drop of blood to activate his storage ring and retrieved his token, using the faint spiritual energy contained within the blood to send his location to the Sect Master of the Qingyun Sect.

An’an was always running off; perhaps it was better to let himself be the one to take control of this relationship.

Once the Sect Master and the others found him, he would protect An’an, and after the poison was neutralized, he would confess his feelings to An’an so they could stay together forever.

On top of Mutian Cliff.

Mu An lay flat on the ground in a set of black clothes, the gentle breeze stirring his hair as he stared at the vast, boundless sky with a complex swirl of emotions.

The mission required him to refrain from curing his master’s poison, but the moment he met his master’s pleading eyes, he could not help but soften.

After uttering those harsh words, he felt like an utter scoundrel, leaving him with no choice but to hide outside.

In his heart, he prayed silently for the female lead and her companions to arrive in Muyan City as quickly as possible.

Mu An lay on the cliff top for an entire day, and only when the night grew deep and the moon shone bright amidst sparse stars did he rise to return to the cave dwelling.

The moment he walked through the door and saw his master asleep on the recliner, his heart softened instinctively.

He strode forward and carried him back to the bed.

During the transition, Shen Shengqing opened his eyes, staring at Mu An without uttering a single word.

That night, Shen Shengqing did not initiate another embrace with Mu An.

After Mu An fell fast asleep, the two of them slept on opposite sides of the bed.

Perhaps it was his physical discomfort that made Shen Shengqing’s heart turn fragile and sentimental; what exactly did Mu An mean by all of this?

If he didn’t like his body, why had he stolen glances at him so frequently in the past?

If he did like his body, why had he hesitated so long to touch him?

On his lips, Mu An claimed he had confined him because he couldn’t bear to lose him, yet now he paid no heed to his physical condition.

Mu An’s affection was truly so shallow; rather than love, it was more as if Mu An had merely found a favorite toy, playing with it when he was amused but harboring no deep affection.

Shen Shengqing’s eyes gradually darkened as a metallic, rusty taste rushed up his throat.

Unprepared, he spat out a mouthful of fresh blood.

The crimson splattered onto Mu An’s eyelashes, jolting the youth awake from his sleep.

Shen Shengqing could clearly see the stunned daze in An’an’s eyes.

“Shizun!”

Mu An’s heart raced frantically, and he scrambled out of bed, hurriedly tapping acupoints on Shen Shengqing’s body.

Shen Shengqing watched the youth’s eyes, which had reddened with panic, in silence, and his heart suddenly felt a wave of relief.

An’an did care about him after all.

Mu An frantically poured out medicinal pills and fed them to Shen Shengqing all at once, while the system’s mechanical announcement echoed in his mind.

[The plot point is approaching. Please be prepared, Host, to complete the plot mission: die under the female lead’s arrow.]

Mu An’s heart skipped a beat, and his mind went completely blank.

Shen Shengqing reached out to grab his hand, pressing it against his cheek and rubbing slightly as if to comfort him.

Mu An stood completely frozen, passively allowing Shen Shengqing to make his moves, but tears unexpectedly spilled from his eyes.

“Shizun, I will find a medical cultivator for you tomorrow. You will be fine,” Mu An said, channeling his spiritual energy to enter Shen Shengqing’s body and suppress the poison.

Looking at the bleak darkness in Mu An’s eyes, Shen Shengqing felt an intense ache of tenderness in his heart.

He leaned in and kissed the youth’s forehead, wishing to convey a message.

Even if his poison was cured, he would not leave Mu An.

He would stay by Mu An’s side forever.

Though he did not understand what kind of feelings Mu An harbored for him, he would fulfill everything Mu An desired.

Feeling the warmth on his forehead, grief and bewilderment intertwined deep within Mu An’s heart.

He was about to complete his mission.

He would likely never return to this world in his lifetime, and he would ultimately say goodbye to his master forever.

Having spent so many years in this world, it was now drawing to a close.

He was about to die when Shizun thought of him in the future, would there still be a trace of reluctance to let go?

Was Shizun’s kiss at this moment born of heartfelt pity, or was it merely an act to comfort him?

***

The next morning.

Shen Shengqing was sleeping deeply, his complexion still pale and devoid of strength, likely due to vomiting blood last night.

Mu An brushed the bangs aside from Shen Shengqing’s forehead, staring at his face as if bidding a final farewell.

He stood up, tucked the blankets in tightly, finished cooking the porridge, and placed it on the table in a temperature-preserving magical vessel.

“System, you’re saying the female lead is currently inside Muyan City?”

[Yes, Shen Shengqing previously used a communication token to send his location information back to his sect.]

[Now that the conflict between the demon clan and humans is intensifying, humans want to wage war against the demons. As one of the few cultivators at the Spiritual Transformation stage across both the human and demon realms, humans need to find Shen Shengqing for assistance, and the female lead and her companions are currently rushing toward Muyan City to find him.]

Mu An looked back at Mutian Cliff, steadying his resolve. “Give me the female lead’s location; I’ll go draw her over.”

He swallowed the drug Qing Ya had previously given him, completely lifting the seal on his demon bloodline.

In the plot, when he died, he died with the identity of a demon. For the sake of his mission score, Mu An ultimately removed the seal on his body.

After coughing up a mouthful of fresh blood, a surging, turbulent wave of demonic energy erupted from Mu An’s body.

He could feel his cultivation realm loosening; with just a tiny bit more effort, he could break through to the Nascent Soul stage.

Yet at this point, whatever his cultivation level was meant nothing to him anymore.
