Chapter 26: The Stolen Soul Lamp

How to Consolidate Your Family Status as a Live-in Son-in-law?

Could An’an be implying something to him?

With this thought in mind, Shen Shengqing opened the book.

Chapter One: Remain Neither Haughty nor Humble, Guard Your Bottom Line

Chapter Two: Let Your Capability Do the Talking: Make the Household Unable to Function Without You

Chapter Three: Understand the Family Structure: Who to Win Over

Chapter Four: What to Do When Your Wife Doesn’t Come Home? Don’t Ask

Chapter Five: How to Drive Out the Third Party in Your Marriage

Shen Shengqing stared at the table of contents for a moment, then turned to Chapter Four with a cold expression.

[If your wife doesn’t come home, do not be in a hurry to question her. The less you pursue, ask, or get angry, the more she will actually panic first. The calmer you are, the harder it will be for her to read you. The moment you show panic, she will think you cannot live without her, and she will only get worse.]

Shen Shengqing’s brow furrowed slightly; there seemed to be some truth to this.

An’an had confined him precisely because he didn’t know how Shen Shengqing truly felt.

This proved that the colder he acted, the more anxious An’an would become, and the more clingy he would be.

[If she runs out, it is mostly because she is bored at home or feels that you lack attraction. You only need to do three things: first, make money; second, improve yourself; third, handle all the household affairs perfectly without revolving entirely around her. Gradually, she will discover that it is not you who cannot live without her, but she who cannot live without you.]

Shen Shengqing’s eyes flickered, and he stood up, putting the book down.

Looking around this newly renovated home, he realized he had to show An’an his worth so that An’an could not live without him.

Although he had currently lost control of his spiritual energy, as the male head of the household, how could he just sit around and wait for death!

Shen Shengqing grabbed a broom from the side and began to sweep up.

On the other side, Mu An had no idea that his master was currently studying “How to Consolidate Your Family Status as a Live-in Son-in-law” which he had purchased purely out of curiosity; at this moment, he was placing an order for a carpet with a merchant.

“The shape of this carpet is far too bizarre,” the bearded middle-aged man muttered, studying the blueprint for a moment. “Are you sure you want it made this way?”

Mu An nodded vigorously.

The bearded man had no choice but to accept the deposit and told him to return tomorrow to collect it.

Mu An nodded in agreement and walked out.

People bustled back and forth on the street, the air filled with the continuous cries of street vendors.

Mu An walked up to a steamed bun stall, “Boss, give me two buns.”

“Coming right up!”

The boss replied as he picked up the buns, while responding to the person behind him, “The city gates have been sealed! Why is that?”

Hearing this, Mu An felt a jolt of alarm, casting a sideways glance.

“A demon spy snuck into the City Lord’s Estate. Just moments ago, the estate’s treasures were stolen! They’ve sealed the city gates now and are going to inspect everyone one by one!”

Hearing this, Mu An’s heart trembled.

Why did they have to seal the gates for a search at this of all times, when he hadn’t even returned home yet?

Thinking of the demon bloodline within his own body, he could not help but chime in, “Demons have always been adept at hiding their identities. How is the City Lord going to inspect everyone? Surely they can’t check everyone’s pulse with spiritual energy one by one?”

Hearing his question, the speaking man glanced at him, “You’re really out of the loop. Ever since the Ten Thousand Artifacts Pavilion developed the demon-expelling bell, what noble family or great clan doesn’t have one? As long as a demon does not possess an Earth-rank treasure or higher to conceal their identity, the demon-expelling bell will ring as soon as they draw near.”

Mu An put on an expression of delight, “That’s wonderful. They should be able to catch the demon very quickly then, so it won’t delay my journey home.”

Internally, however, he was crying a river.

Dammit!

He didn’t have an Earth-rank magical item to conceal his identity; he was utterly doomed.

Carrying his buns, he walked down the street, turning his grief and anger into an appetite as he took a huge bite, pondering how to evade the search.

Suddenly, a wave of strange fragrance drifted past him.

He raised his eyelids slightly and looked back, only to see a man in black wearing a bamboo hat, behaving like a traveling swordsman.

If he was a swordsman, why would he carry such a peculiar scent?

Mu An asked casually in his mind, ‘System, is this person a demon?’

[Host, it is not as if every random person walking past you is a demon.]

Mu An nodded; it had indeed been just a casual query.

[But he really is a demon.]

“Huh?”

Mu An’s eyes lit up.

This was perfect!

If he helped the City Lord’s Estate locate the demon who stole the treasures, they would surely open the gates and let people pass!

‘System, what treasure did the City Lord’s Estate lose? Is it on this person?’

[What was lost is a Soul-Gathering Lantern. It will be used in the later stages when the male lead resurrects the female lead, and it is currently on this person.]

‘So, in the original plot, did the demons successfully carry this lantern out of Muyan City?’

Since it involved the main storyline, Mu An could not help but ask further.

The system fell silent for a moment, seemingly retrieving information.

[In the end, this lantern was taken by Qing Ya. In the later stages of the plot, the male lead reclaims it after killing Qing Ya, using it to resurrect the female lead.]

Hearing this, Mu An hesitated.

If he were to capture this demon now, preventing the lantern from reaching Qing Ya’s hands, would it cause changes in the subsequent plot?

However, before he could think any further, a commotion arose in the distance.

“The city guard is here…”

The commoners buzzed with discussion.

“Is that the demon-expelling bell in their hands?”

Mu An’s heart tightened.

Seeing the black-clad man ahead quickly duck into a dark alleyway, he followed closely behind.

The black-clad man was highly vigilant, turning through countless twists and turns within the dark alleys.

Mu An followed right behind him while staying concealed, nearly losing him a few times.

Soon, the black-clad man arrived at a desolate courtyard.

Mu An squatted below a corner of the wall, waiting to see his next move.

The black-clad man strode quickly toward the main hall, but he seemed to spot something; his movements froze, and he began backing out of the door step by step.

Although he could not see the man’s expression, Mu An could clearly discern his terror from his movements.

At the same time, a figure draped in dazzling red garments slowly stepped across the threshold, and the crisp, tinkling sound of bells chiming on their person rang out in the air.

At this moment, those crisp rings didn’t sound playful at all; instead, they felt like death tolling bells.

The figure in red suddenly paused, an effeminate voice carrying a hint of a smile. “Come out, little thing.”

Mu An’s heart tightened, but he still didn’t make a move.

Seeing that he wouldn’t come out, the figure in red slowly turned his face to the side, revealing a white mask.

Mu An’s pupils contracted slightly. A hidden weapon shot fiercely toward him, and he mobilized his spiritual energy to dodge sideways with extreme speed.

The dart instantly embedded itself into the wall behind him, kicking up a flurry of stone dust in an instant.

Before Mu An could even react, the other had already closed in right in front of him, his throat violently grabbed and tightly choked by the person in red.

Mu An’s pupils dilated violently, and just as he attempted to resist, he abruptly heard the system’s broadcast.

[Host, this person is Qing Ya.]

Since it was Qing Ya, it was naturally impossible for him to take his life right here, so Mu An stopped intentionally resisting.

Seeing that he wasn’t fighting back, Qing Ya let out a soft chuckle. “Interesting.”

The hand around his neck slowly loosened, allowing Mu An to draw a breath. Gasping for air, he looked at Qing Ya, who looked the absolute part of a major villain, and then glanced at the black-clad man standing behind him.

“Aren’t you afraid of me?” Qing Ya’s voice pulled his attention back.

Mu An’s Adam’s apple bobbed slightly, and a cold sneer overflowed from the corner of his lips. “Elder Qing Ya loves helping others the most; why would he ever slaughter the innocent indiscriminately?”

Qing Ya froze for a fraction of a second before bursting into another series of soft laughs. “To think you’d actually be able to recognize me.”

He lightly lifted Mu An’s face, looking at the youth’s flushed cheeks from the oxygen deprivation, and felt a stir of desire in his heart. “Well? Have you slept with your master yet?”

Mu An pressed his lips together slightly. He didn’t dare answer truthfully, fearing Qing Ya would think he had already completed the poisoning mission and, considering him a useless pawn, summarily execute him on the spot.

Seeing this, Qing Ya assumed he hadn’t succeeded yet, and the pressure on his hand involuntarily increased. “Truly a useless thing.”

He looked Mu An up and down, taking in the red robes, and suspicion arose in his heart. “Could it be that you’ve already been expelled from your master’s sect?”

Sorry, there are rough skips from chapter to chapter. Is this the same in the original work or possibly a bug on the website?
