Chapter 19: The Queen’s Garden and a Royal Encounter

The Queen’s chambers were nestled within the largest royal garden in the capital.

This garden boasted nearly eighty percent of the world’s known flower species, making it renowned throughout the entirety of Darke State.

Unless a blossom was a truly rare treasure, it could almost certainly be found thriving here.

Legend had it that the King, in his youth, had commissioned this garden as a grand gesture to court the Queen. He had spared no expense, spending nearly a decade collecting and cultivating flowers from every corner of the globe within its bounds.

The news of the King successfully marrying the Queen had once sent ripples of astonishment throughout the entire kingdom.

All who witnessed that rare and beautiful union were deeply moved by their fabled romance, offering their heartfelt blessings.

“Hmm, eighty percent of flower species? I feel like there might be some good stuff in there.”

After Laura finished her self-indulgent recounting of the story, Su Mu offered his thoughts, a pensive look on his face.

Laura’s beautiful, dreamy mood shattered instantly. She snapped angrily,

“That’s not the point!”

“Oh, well, it’s just a legend anyway. If even half of that story is true, it’s a miracle.”

Su Mu didn’t take it to heart, merely making a mental note of the useful information within.

“Your Highness, don’t you find this story incredibly touching? The sight of His Majesty the King pursuing love with the entire kingdom’s resources at his disposal—how deeply moving!”

Observing Laura’s face, alight with envy, Su Mu offered a merciless critique.

“Touching? Ha. I only find this story utterly idiotic. If it were true, I’d genuinely worry for the future of this kingdom. After all, saddled with such a profligate king, its demise wouldn’t be far off.”

Bai Ji gently tugged Su Mu’s hand, calmly cautioning, “Your Highness, mind your words.”

Laura glared fiercely at Su Mu, complaining, “Your Highness, you’re far too pragmatic! If someone were to pursue me like that, I’d be so moved I’d marry him without hesitation, you know that, Your Highness!”

The strong hint was unmistakable.

Su Mu chuckled. “Go back to sleep. You’ll find everything you wish for in your dreams.”

Laura was enraged, stomping her foot. “You stubborn blockhead! You icy lump! You haven’t changed a bit! Ouch—”

Before she could finish, Bai Ji had already twisted her ear, admonishing, “Show His Highness some respect!”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, Sister Bai, please forgive me~”

Laura winced in pain, instantly changing her attitude, smiling ingratiatingly as she begged for mercy.

“Hmph, no forgiveness. You need a lesson!”

“Ah, I truly am sorry, please let me go…”

Listening to the bickering beside him, Su Mu couldn’t help but let a relaxed smile grace his lips.

Suddenly, a tall, robust man with equally silver hair appeared on the bluestone path directly ahead.

His expression was cold, his eyes sharp as he looked at Su Mu, making no attempt to conceal his disdain.

Laura and Bai Ji noticed him as well, immediately falling silent.

Bai Ji lowered her gaze, following closely behind Su Mu, her demeanor devoid of any further movement or expression.

Laura positioned herself a step behind Su Mu, whispering in his ear, “Your Highness, this is your elder brother, His Royal Highness Sasaki Miston, the First Prince of the Miston Kingdom.”

Su Mu understood. As Sasaki drew closer, he mused, ‘Truly a family, even the hair color is the same.’ He then gave a slight nod in greeting.

However, Sasaki didn’t spare him a glance, completely ignoring him. He offered a gentlemanly smile and walked towards Bai Ji, who was behind Su Mu, saying,

“Bai Ji, how have you considered the suggestion I gave you before?”

“First Prince, I will only ever be His Highness’s attendant.”

Bai Ji kept her gaze lowered, her voice betraying no emotional fluctuation.

Sasaki chuckled. “Who isn’t a Highness here?”

Bai Ji remained silent, but the mockery in her eyes was impossible to conceal.

Sasaki didn’t seem annoyed, stating magnanimously, “There’s no need to rush. You can take your time to consider it. After all, the doors to my chambers are always open for you.”

With that, he looked at Laura nearby, extending a blood-red jade stone, a symbol of the First Prince’s status. “And of course, Miss Saintess, the same offer applies to you.”

Laura giggled as she took the jade. “Alright, I’ll give it serious thought.”

Sasaki offered a knowing smile, then departed with his guards.

From beginning to end, he never once looked Su Mu directly in the eye.

Su Mu merely observed everything with a cold gaze. He wasn’t angered, but silently mourned for three seconds for the First Prince who dared to poach from him, and from a demon at that.

“Let’s go.”

He said calmly once the First Prince had left.

The group continued along the stone path towards the Queen’s palace.

However, the atmosphere was no longer as harmonious as before.

Bai Ji and Su Mu remained silent, while Laura, on the other hand, was engrossed in playing with the newly acquired blood-red, squab-like gem.

Perhaps sensing the unusual tension, Laura glanced at Su Mu, then at Bai Ji, making a nervous expression as she asked, “Your Highness, you’re not angry, are you?”

Su Mu was deep in thought, responding casually, “No, I was just ignored by the First Prince. It’s no big deal.”

“I’m not talking about that!”

“Hm? Oh, about him trying to poach my attendant? Heh, he didn’t succeed, did he?”

Su Mu curved his lips, looking back at the quietly standing Bai Ji.

Laura’s heart suddenly felt hollow at Su Mu’s reaction. She quietly asked, “What about me?”

“What?”

Su Mu hadn’t caught on.

Laura’s eyes reddened. Raising her voice, she asked sadly, “Aren’t you worried about *me* being poached?”

Su Mu tilted his head, slowly forming a question mark in his mind, asking in confusion,

“You’re not *my* person, so what’s there to poach?”

Laura froze instantly.

‘So, had she always just been an outsider?’

****

“Oh, little Mu Mu!”

Furei, who was admiring the seven-colored flowers in the garden, spotted Su Mu and the others at the entrance and called out in surprise.

“Mother.”

Furei jogged over, cheerfully taking Su Mu’s hand. With her usual gentle smile, she asked warmly, “Is little Mu Mu feeling better?”

“I’m almost fully recovered.”

Su Mu suppressed the flush on his face, forcing himself to speak calmly.

Since Furei was in her own chambers, her attire was much more casual compared to when she had visited him last.

Her moon-white, thin gown swayed with her white hair, revealing her fair skin without reservation.

The butterfly knot at her chest adorned her peaks, occasionally fluttering up and down with her movements.

A rich, fresh scent of morning dew clung to her.

Furei’s hand was cool, a comfortable sensation in his grasp.

Even though Su Mu knew this was his original body’s mother, his heart couldn’t help but stir with an inexplicable ripple.

“Little Mu Mu, what made you decide to visit Mama today?”

Furei asked with a smile.

Su Mu cleared his throat, then pointed towards Laura.

Following the direction of Su Mu’s finger, Furei naturally saw the pink-furred little fox struggling wildly in Laura’s hands.

“Jiji jiji…”

The little fox let out a pitiful squeal.

“Pera?”

Furei showed a bewildered expression. “Why is she with you all?”

Su Mu was about to speak when Furei added, “Little Laura? Little Bai Ji?”

Bai Ji stated directly, “Lady Pera attempted a night raid on His Highness, trying to scheme against him, but we subdued her.”

Feeling the little fox’s hateful gaze, Laura quickly added, “It’s an exaggeration, an exaggeration. She just seemed to want to do something to His Royal Highness, and we stopped her, that’s all. After all, His Royal Highness was sleeping soundly, and waking him up wouldn’t have been good.”

Furei looked at the little fox without a word.

The little fox, looking wronged, extended her cute pink tongue and licked Furei’s palm.

Furei lowered her gaze, stroking Pera’s little head without a change in expression. “It seems my Pera has caused little Mu Mu a lot of trouble.”

Su Mu remained silent, quietly observing Furei’s expression.

From the looks of it, she truly seemed unaware of Pera’s attempt to test him.

Su Mu inexplicably breathed a sigh of relief.

Since he had woken up, Furei had been the gentlest and kindest person to him. Most importantly, from her, Su Mu truly felt the warmth of maternal love.

He genuinely didn’t want to believe that such a person would harbor ulterior motives towards him.

Furei placed a silver chain on the little fox, then said to Laura, “Little Laura, undo the curse.”

Laura was stunned. She hadn’t expected her curse, applied so subtly, to be discovered by the Queen.

She hesitated, glancing at the little fox Pera, then at Su Mu.

“Undo it.”

Su Mu also instructed.

Although he didn’t know what curse Furei was referring to, he decided to trust her words.

Laura pouted, looking somewhat unwilling, but in the end, she obediently removed the curse.

Furei stroked Su Mu’s head, saying dotingly, “Little Mu Mu, thank you for trusting me. I’m truly sorry that Pera hurt you. So, as compensation, I’ll give Pera to you as a pet~”

Everyone except Furei was stunned by these words.

“Eh?!!!”
