Chapter 25: The Strange Dolls in Laura’s Room

“May I go in and take a look?”

Su Mu asked, his gaze fixed on the tightly shut door of the room.

The girls were struck speechless.

“Our Saintess absolutely detests anyone entering her room, Your Highness, you really shouldn’t…”

“It’s fine. She already dislikes me anyway, so a little more won’t hurt.”

Su Mu’s resolve was unwavering. Disregarding the girls’ words, he set off towards the dormitory building.

“Oh, and remember to keep this a secret.”

He paused, uttering the words without even turning his head.

The girls watched Su Mu’s retreating figure, their expressions filled with disdain.

‘That shameless prince! Before he lost his memory, he clung to that little hussy at the Sanatorium like a piece of gum. Now that he’s forgotten everything, he’s only gotten worse, barging into others’ rooms like some pervert. It’s truly disgusting.’

‘To think Laura used to flaunt her closeness to him so triumphantly before us!’ Their hearts burned with a mix of fury and resentment, wondering why they weren’t the ones he was so infatuated with.

Of course, Su Mu remained blissfully unaware of the complex, twisted thoughts swirling in their minds.

Su Mu’s head was currently filled with all the strange peculiarities surrounding Laura.

Perhaps, within Laura’s room, he might uncover some details about his original self’s past with her.

He fumbled his way to the door and gently pushed it open.

The wooden door slowly creaked ajar.

The door was unlocked.

This confirmed some of Su Mu’s observations and earlier suspicions.

Lack of privacy might well be one reason why the healing mages who came here to study were reluctant to live in the dormitories.

The room was devoid of light, incredibly dim. Coupled with the backlighting, it was impossible to discern anything inside.

Su Mu looked up at a magic crystal suspended high above. Following the connecting wires, he reached out to touch the wall.

There was a recessed device interface.

Su Mu injected his meager remaining magic into it, and the magic crystal lamp on the dome immediately burst into brilliant light.

However, the sight within the room made Su Mu’s heart stop.

Inside the room, it was as if countless scarlet eyes had opened, all staring directly at him.

Su Mu jumped, goosebumps erupting across his skin, though he managed to stifle a scream.

Only when he calmed down did he realize that the eyes staring at him were actually a pile of small black wooden dolls. Each was adorned with varying amounts of hair of different colors, some even stained with blood, emanating an eerie aura.

Su Mu swallowed, his scalp tingling.

Such a scene evoked a terrifying sense of déjà vu, reminiscent of medieval dark witches, sending a chill down his spine.

This was completely different from the girl’s boudoir Su Mu had imagined.

Why were there so many bizarre dolls in Laura’s room? What were these dolls used for? What exactly was Laura hiding?

A torrent of questions erupted in Su Mu’s mind.

He suppressed his fear and picked up one of the dolls from the table.

Carelessly, he felt a sharp prick on his hand.

Tiny, sharp needles were actually embedded in the doll.

Fortunately, Su Mu reacted quickly, dropping the doll in time. The wound on his hand wasn’t too deep, not even drawing blood.

But the doll he had dropped suffered a worse fate.

Perhaps its material wasn’t very durable, for with that single fall, its head snapped clean off.

Su Mu, still shaken, quickly picked up the broken doll, utterly terrified.

‘Oh no, I broke Laura’s doll! What am I going to do?’

Su Mu felt a touch of awkwardness, but he didn’t dwell on it. After all, he had no intention of keeping his visit to Laura’s room a secret.

In fact, he would deliberately let Laura know about it.

He wanted to see the true limits of Laura’s endless flattery towards his amnesiac self, and what her underlying motives truly were.

Being careful not to get pricked by the needles on the doll, Su Mu cautiously brought it closer to his eyes, examining it thoroughly.

Suddenly, a thought struck him, recalling similar items he had read about in novels from his previous life:

Voodoo dolls and the Seven Arrows of Nails.

Curse!

The word exploded in Su Mu’s mind.

He couldn’t help but remember Furei, who had asked Laura to remove the curse from the fox-girl Pera.

Could it be that these black wooden dolls were all tools Laura used for cursing?

Su Mu carefully observed the doll in his hand. On its back, he faintly discerned a person’s name:

Rosie Boyi.

Was this the name of the cursed target?

Su Mu could never have imagined that the playful, cute, and lively girl he remembered would engage in such dark practices as hexing others.

Just as he was about to investigate further, a sudden daze washed over him from deep within his mind, causing his body to sway. He instinctively grabbed the table for support.

‘No, there’s something strange about this place. I need to leave quickly.’

An unknown fear pressed down on his heart.

Before leaving, Su Mu cast one last glance at the desk. He noticed a glass cabinet, tightly locked, in the most prominent spot. Inside, there was a unique doll, crafted from pear-yellow agarwood.

****

The guide girls were still waiting outside.

Seeing Su Mu emerge with a grim expression, they assumed he had discovered something about Laura’s infidelity in her room. Their eyes sparkled with gossip, tinged with a hint of schadenfreude.

“Your Highness, are you alright?”

Su Mu shook his head and asked, “Do you know a person named Rosie Boyi?”

Caught off guard, the girls looked puzzled as to why Su Mu would ask this, but they honestly replied, “She was a classmate of ours, but she dropped out a long time ago. Your Highness, why do you ask?”

“Dropped out? Why did she drop out?”

Su Mu frowned, pressing for more information.

“We heard she got sick, but we’re not entirely sure about the specifics.”

The girls seemed largely unconcerned and knew little about it.

“I see.”

Su Mu took a deep breath, calming himself. After leaving the room, the dizzying sensation slowly receded.

“Ladies, thank you for your company. I’ll treat you to tea next time. I have something to attend to, so I’ll be leaving first.”

Su Mu hurried away from the Sanatorium, stopping in a secluded spot, gasping for breath, his strength giving out.

Suddenly, he caught a pungent odor.

A damp little fox appeared from nowhere, leaping onto his shoulder.

Pera angrily tugged at Su Mu’s hair, furiously venting the grievances from her mortifying experience in front of Furei.

Seeing the little fox, Su Mu’s heart stirred.

Ignoring the unbearable stench, he quickly asked, “Pera, don’t you think Laura is a bit strange?”

Pera rolled her eyes at Su Mu. “Strange? What’s strange about her? Does she have eight…”

Su Mu cut her off, a little speechless. “I’m not talking about her physical attributes, I mean, her personality.”

Pera understood Su Mu’s meaning. “Oh, that’s certainly strange, but it’s also normal, considering she’s someone who can cultivate both healing magic and curse magic to their extremes.”

“Oh? How so?”

Su Mu eagerly inquired.

“Healing mages are usually kind-hearted individuals; such people can more easily draw upon sacred energy. Curse mages, on the other hand, are typically very evil; wicked people find it easier to manipulate dark energy. Do you understand what I mean?”

Su Mu mused, “So, you’re saying Laura is a kind-hearted villain?”

“More accurately, she’s someone who has fused ultimate good and ultimate evil within herself. No normal person could achieve such a feat, so isn’t it quite normal for Laura to have a strange personality?” the little fox corrected.

“By the way, why are you suddenly asking about this?”

“I just found some things that caught my attention…”

Su Mu didn’t elaborate.

Pera snorted softly, not pressing further. “You say she’s strange, but I think you’re stranger than her.”

“What’s wrong with me?”

“Isn’t it strange that you could be so madly infatuated with such a twisted individual?”

Su Mu gave an awkward laugh, offering no retort.

“Let’s go, time to head back.”

“Eh—so early?”

Su Mu suppressed a wave of nausea. “If you weren’t so stinky, and didn’t get it all over me, I wouldn’t be going back so early to change.”

He wiped a wet spot on his clothes, then brought his hand to his nose, sniffing it suspiciously. “What did you do? Why do you smell so bad?”

The little fox shyly extended a delicate paw and lightly tapped Su Mu’s face.

“Naughty! You smelled my pee-pee~”

Su Mu: …

“Pera, go back and prepare to die.”

“Jiii—!!!”
