Chapter 9: The Price of a Prince’s Choice

In the resplendent, gilded bedchamber, the headless corpse still bled, and the kneeling maids continued to tremble. The crystal wind chimes by the bed swayed, despite the absence of a breeze.

“Ding-a-ling~ Ding-a-ling~”

It was the same familiar scene.

Su Mu stared at the screen before him, his face devoid of expression.

Having undergone a death that was both agonizing and torturous the first time, he had been mentally prepared for his previous demise. Consequently, this time, he awoke with remarkable composure.

Though the suffocating sensation of death still left a lingering suppression in his heart, he would no longer lose his composure.

“Your Highness?”

Bai Ji’s voice reached his ears.

Su Mu cast a cold glance at her, then surveyed the kneeling maids. His eyes immediately found the sole blonde maid among them.

‘It was her, wasn’t it? She was the one who killed me last time.’

A surge of anger flared within Su Mu.

While the woman’s story had been tragic and sympathetic, what did it have to do with him?

Why should he, a person inexplicably transmigrated into this world, become a scapegoat and die for that idiotic prince?

As his anger intensified, Su Mu failed to notice the oppressive aura emanating from him.

The maids kneeling below buried their heads even deeper.

Bai Ji, however, remained expressionless and as aloof as ever.

“Your Highness?”

Bai Ji called out again.

Su Mu merely glanced at her, offering no response.

‘Damn it, this woman is a lunatic too.’

He couldn’t fathom how she could be so perceptive, noticing the slightest details and setting traps for him. She had even used an appraisal stone to expose him.

Bai Ji dismembering him into five pieces remained a shadow in his heart that he couldn’t overcome. She was typically such a cold, icy beauty, and her system portrait depicted a gentle elder sister.

Yet, who would have thought she would reveal such a frenzied expression when killing him? This was undeniably a yandere, wasn’t it?

The thought of living with such a woman in the future made his head ache.

Su Mu gazed at the list of options on the screen, falling into deep thought.

After two trial-and-error attempts, the original body’s persona had gradually become more vivid in his mind: a tyrannical, ruthless, arrogant, and lecherous prince.

In that case, Option Three made perfect sense. It wasn’t difficult to imitate such a person; the challenge lay in what he should do after dealing with the current situation.

With Bai Ji by his side, he would inevitably expose himself again without a compelling reason, thus repeating the tragedy of his first death.

Su Mu felt a profound sense of melancholy.

‘Ah, I’ll just deal with the current crisis first. Things will work out in the end. Worrying about the future now is useless; I can only take things one step at a time.’

Su Mu rose, looking down at the people below with an icy expression. “A’Bai, dispose of all of them. From now on, my bedchamber will no longer require maids.”

Bai Ji froze for a moment, a hint of reluctance flickering across her face. She remained motionless.

In the dead silence, Su Mu’s words were like a massive stone thrown into a tranquil pond, instantly stirring up a huge commotion.

Among the kneeling maids, one timid woman, her voice thick with terror, pleaded, “Your Highness, Your Highness, Na’er’s transgression has nothing to do with us. We know nothing! Please, spare us!”

Su Mu remained deaf to their pleas.

He watched the hesitant Bai Ji with cold eyes, then slowly took a step forward. He reached the head of the murdered woman and kicked it.

The head rolled like a ball past Bai Ji, eventually coming to a stop before the kneeling maids.

The maids immediately fell silent, staring at their former colleague’s unseeing eyes, not daring to breathe.

Bai Ji’s expression was grim, still hesitating.

Su Mu’s voice deepened, growing even colder. “Bai Ji! Are you deaf?”

The low voice echoed through the bedchamber.

Hearing His Highness call her full name, Bai Ji panicked slightly.

She turned to face the maids who had served her for so long and softly uttered two words: “I’m sorry.”

“Screech—”

The longsword was drawn from its sheath.

With a cold, resolute expression, Bai Ji advanced towards them, sword in hand.

The maids’ faces turned ashen.

They knew there was no escape from death, so they quietly awaited its arrival.

Su Mu watched the scene unfold, the plot proceeding exactly as he had chosen.

Suddenly, he frowned, looking towards the maids. ‘It seems like someone is missing over there… I remember there was a blonde maid, but where is she?’

Just as Su Mu pondered this, he saw Bai Ji suddenly spin around, her face filled with terror.

“No!”

A red aura erupted from Bai Ji, her unbound black hair fluttering in the air.

In the eyes of Su Mu and everyone else, Bai Ji vanished instantly, leaving only an afterimage in the air.

“Eh?”

Su Mu was bewildered. ‘What happened?’

A gust of wind swept past his face.

Suddenly, a heavy blow landed on his back, and a heart-wrenching pain instantly engulfed his entire body.

Su Mu lowered his gaze, just in time to see the tip of a blade piercing through his chest.

Blood stained the silver-white blade tip, trickling down like a stream, dyeing his clothes and the bedsheets crimson.

He felt the strength rapidly draining from his body, and his vision grew dim.

‘What is going on? Wasn’t Option Three the correct one? Why is this happening?’

Su Mu’s body began to sway.

‘Could it be… am I going to die again?’

Gathering his last ounce of strength, he managed to turn his head, looking back with blurry vision.

‘At least before I die, I want to see whose hands are so dirty. How can someone stab me in the back without a word?’

His gaze fell upon Bai Ji, who had instantly rushed over, slamming a familiar blonde maid violently into the wall.

‘Ahhh! It’s you again, you fiend!’

Su Mu coughed up a mouthful of blood, not only from his injuries but also from sheer rage. ‘What enmity, what grudge, that you have to run over and stab me? Is trading one life for another so interesting?!’

Seeing the blonde maid slammed against the wall, her head seemingly dislocated, she fell unconscious. Su Mu felt a slight sense of relief, muttering a silent ‘Good for her.’

He was also nearing his limit, his body swaying precariously, finally collapsing. But a pair of hands caught him just in time, pulling him into an embrace.

The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was Bai Ji’s panicked expression, tears still glistening in the corners of her fish-tail red eyes.

‘To think she could show such an expression too… She was always so cold before, hehe… Don’t tell me, it’s actually quite cute…’

After these jumbled thoughts flashed through his mind, Su Mu completely lost consciousness.
