Chapter 39: The Fox’s Secret and a Succubus’s Scent

After safely returning to his chambers, the results of the third life-or-death choice had already been settled, signifying the lifting of the death threat.

Su Mu wasn’t in a hurry to check what rewards or titles the system had bestowed upon him this time. Having spent so long out, he was practically starving.

First, he needed to eat.

Su Mu changed into a light, silken house robe. He washed away the dust and grime accumulated from his travels, feeling his mind considerably clearer, as if his entire being had been reborn.

He savored the cool refreshment of his bath, then ventured into the garden outside his chambers. There, he gently scooped up the little fox lying on the ground like a corpse and nestled her in his arms, stroking her softly.

The sensation of her soft fur, stroked from head to tail, far surpassed the stress-relief gadgets of his previous life.

However, Pera seemed to be in a bad mood, sullen and withdrawn.

“What’s wrong? Who upset you?”

“A certain heartless highness abandoned me, this adorable little fox, alone in the cold palace. Lonely, desolate, cold, boohoo…”

Su Mu: ‘…’

Ignoring the little fox who always seemed to be adding drama to her life, Su Mu cleared his mind, pondering various matters.

Seeing Su Mu ignore her, Pera lost interest and returned to normal, though her resentment lingered. She kept scratching Su Mu’s stroking hand with her paws.

“Pera, do you know how you got this contract chain on you?”

Su Mu pressed down her paws with his other hand, asking.

“Why do you ask that?”

Pera looked at Su Mu suspiciously.

“I’m just curious who could create such a powerful magical artifact, capable of controlling even a top-tier Fox King like you…”

Pera grumbled, a hint of frustration in her voice: “Who else? That perverse witch from the Magic Workshop, of course. She’s already a Grand Archmage, yet instead of diligently studying her magic, she spends her days creating these bizarre, disgusting magical devices…”

“Oh… are there any restrictions on using this kind of contract chain?”

“Of course. After the contract chain is placed on the enslaved, it requires a period to engrave a magical imprint. If the enslaved resists or fights against this imprint during that time, the contract chain will break and become useless.”

“Then why were you successfully imprinted?”

Su Mu asked, puzzled.

Pera instantly deflated, lowering her head and falling silent.

‘Heh…’

Even without her explanation, Su Mu could largely guess the reason.

How could a child, just caught misbehaving and brought before their parents, dare to resist the punishment inflicted upon them?

The little fox suddenly perked up her tail in alarm, her small head nuzzling Su Mu as she sniffed vigorously.

“What are you doing? Having another episode?”

Su Mu pushed Pera’s head away in distaste.

“Little Mu Mu, why do you smell of a succubus?!”

“Are you a dog? I went to the Illusionary Paradise today. What, does it still smell? I’ve already showered…”

Su Mu lowered his head, taking a deep breath, but detected nothing.

Pera gritted her teeth and declared, “I can smell those filthy flies even if they turn to ash! Little Mu Mu, who led you astray? How could you go to a place no better than a rat hole!”

Su Mu thought of the adorable Bu You and couldn’t help but defend the succubus lady: “How can you speak of others like that? The succubus lady is very clean and fragrant.”

The little fox erupted in fury, leaping up and shouting, “Little Mu Mu! You’ve fallen! Those vile bugs who only drain spiritual energy are truly despicable, daring to hook up with my Little Mu Mu!”

Su Mu rolled his eyes. This little fox, he wondered what madness she was indulging in now, and why she harbored such intense hostility towards succubi.

The little fox half-lay wistfully before Su Mu, slowly stroking her own leg, provocatively saying, “Little Mu Mu, why go to such a place? Is it that I, your sister, am not alluring enough, or have you lost your touch?”

Su Mu: ‘…’

A little fox making such a seductive gesture looked strange, no matter how he viewed it.

“Your Highness~…”

Pera attempted another flirtatious move, only to be cut short by Su Mu’s exasperated, righteous fist.

“Just be normal!”

“Chirp!!!”

The little fox whimpered, lying obediently on Su Mu’s shoulder.

Su Mu finally found some peace, closing his eyes, quietly waiting for the fading sunlight to slowly dry the water from his hair.

“Your Highness, dinner is served.”

Bai Ji approached, reminding him.

“Mm…”

Steak, tamagoyaki, spirit fish sashimi…

The food prepared by the kitchen was as lavish as ever.

Su Mu hadn’t eaten well all day and was famished. He ate with elegant gusto, finishing what was more than a simple dinner, filling the emptiness in his stomach.

“A’Bai, prepare some anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving ointment. We’ll be going out in a bit.”

Su Mu wiped his mouth with a handkerchief, utterly satisfied, and instructed.

“Yes, Your Highness.”

Bai Ji didn’t ask for the reason; her efficiency was, as always, remarkable.

“Your Highness, are you going out?”

Pera quickly asked.

“Yes, I’m going to Linna’s place.”

“I want to go too.”

“No, you’ll stay and watch the house.”

Su Mu refused without hesitation.

“Why, Your Highness? If you take me, this adorable little animal, to Princess Linna’s, I can even help liven up the atmosphere…”

“Heh, liven up the atmosphere? With your impromptu dirty jokes?”

Su Mu sneered, glancing at Pera.

Pera leaped up, wrapping herself around Su Mu’s head, saying mournfully, “Your Highness, please, I’ve been cooped up all day. I can’t take it anymore. Let me go out for some fresh air.”

Su Mu grabbed the little fox’s tail, pulling her off his head. He said grumpily, “Alright, alright, stop playing pitiful. After we leave, you can go out and wander around yourself, but remember to be back before the sun disappears, or you’ll face the consequences.”

“Yay!”

Pera was as happy as a child.

Bai Ji quickly completed the preparations as Su Mu had instructed.

Su Mu changed into a form-fitting purple brocade robe for his outing, carrying the re-packaged little black dress, and departed.

“Chirp chirp~”

The little fox stood on the garden fence, chirping.

In the garden, Furei, who was meticulously tending to her flowers, noticed the familiar sound and looked towards the fence.

“Pera?”

Furei approached, pleasantly surprised.

Although she had steeled herself to give Pera to Susumu, the affection between them was real. Being suddenly separated, she still missed the mischievous little fox.

“Lady Furei!”

The little fox, with a tearful cry, pounced into the arms of her beloved mistress.

Furei dotingly embraced Pera, stroking her small head affectionately:

“Did Little Mu Mu bring you along?”

“No, His Highness went to find Princess Linna and wouldn’t take me, so I secretly snuck over here to find you.”

The little fox reveled in Furei’s soft embrace.

“Is that so? It seems you’re getting along quite well with Little Mu Mu.”

Furei said, feeling relieved.

“It’s not good at all! That awful Highness always abuses me, boohoo, he’s so mean!”

The little fox wailed.

“Oh, abuse?”

Furei’s tone was full of playfulness. She then added, “It’s fine to be a little wild at home, but you must remind Little Mu Mu to be more restrained when outside.”

The little fox remembered the embarrassment of peeing while lying down in front of Lady Furei last time and let out a shriek of shame and indignation.

They played for a while.

Furei suddenly put down the little fox and sat on a stone chair, the smile on her face vanishing instantly, replaced by a cold expression.

She crossed her legs, displaying the haughty posture of a queen, and looked down at the little fox on the ground with a condescending gaze, her voice flat: “Playtime is over. Speak, what is it?”

Pera immediately shed her playful demeanor and reported Su Mu’s recent activities to Furei.

Furei tapped her finger to her face, asking thoughtfully, “So, how have you investigated the new soul?”

Pera hesitated, then replied, “Mistress, I haven’t detected the presence of a new soul.”

“None?”

Furei’s delicate brows furrowed, her voice rising several octaves: “How is that possible? The ritual clearly succeeded!”

“But His Highness’s current soul characteristics are almost identical to how they were when he was a child…”

Furei fell silent. After a long moment, she continued to ask, “Continue to observe. Go back.”

Pera seemed about to speak but held back.

“Is there anything else?”

“Mistress, His Highness went to Illusionary Paradise today.”

Pera quickly changed the topic from what she originally intended to say.

“And?”

Furei was somewhat perplexed as to why such a trivial matter was worth mentioning.

“His Highness has the scent of ‘that person’ on him…”

“What?!”

Furei’s brows knitted tightly, her expression turning stern and icy. After a long silence, she murmured to herself, “Heh, it seems I’ll have to find an opportunity to meet with her…”
