Chapter 57: The Blazing Knight and a Lingering Mystery

“It’s fine. If Bai Ji doesn’t find me, she’ll know to return to the royal chambers and look for me.”

Su Mu wasn’t worried. He followed closely behind Ling Guang, walking shoulder to shoulder with Katusha.

“Sasha, just what is his identity?”

Su Mu gestured with his chin towards the golden-armored knight ahead, then asked.

“Sir Ling Guang, the Blazing Knight? He is the greatest knight the kingdom has ever known!”

Katusha’s eyes shone with admiration as she recounted the Blazing Knight Ling Guang’s magnificent accomplishments to Su Mu.

“So he really is the Blazing Knight?”

Su Mu was quite surprised, never imagining such a coincidence in titles.

“It’s a title bestowed upon Sir Ling Guang by the King, meaning Sir Ling Guang shines as warmly and brilliantly as the sun.”

“Oh, such high praise? Yet, he just had you thrown into the dungeon moments ago.”

“That’s merely dealing with matters as they are. Sir Ling Guang was only performing his duties according to the law. Compared to those other cruel inquisitors, I’d say it was my good fortune to fall into Sir Ling Guang’s hands.”

Katusha sighed with emotion.

Su Mu raised an eyebrow, asking with keen interest, “Then, do you know if this Blazing Knight Ling Guang is a man or a woman?”

Katusha paused, then chuckled softly. “Such an accomplished knight must surely be a handsome and dashing male knight, Mu Ge. Your focus is always so unique.”

“A man, huh… That’s no fun. It would have been better if it were a female knight.”

Su Mu couldn’t help but lament.

At that moment, Ling Guang, who had been walking ahead, suddenly stopped and turned around, glaring fiercely at Su Mu.

Su Mu lowered his head, awkwardly rubbing his nose.

‘Damn, I think he heard me…’

Katusha had initially wanted to press Su Mu on why he wished for a female knight.

However, upon seeing the Blazing Knight’s sharp gaze, she instantly swallowed her words.

When Su Mu returned to his chambers, he found Bai Ji waiting by the door.

He hadn’t expected Bai Ji to return first.

He had thought he would have to wait until he was back in his chambers before Bai Ji would arrive.

“Your Highness!”

Bai Ji rushed forward, her body tensing and her vigilance spiking upon seeing the golden-armored knight leading the way.

Ling Guang walked with a straight gaze, paying no mind to Bai Ji’s reaction. He bid farewell to Su Mu. “Your Highness, I have escorted you this far. Farewell.”

“Yes, thank you.”

Su Mu smiled as he saw off the kingdom’s Grand Knight, then turned back to Bai Ji, asking,

“What’s wrong? Do you know him?”

Bai Ji’s reaction felt somewhat off.

“I once nearly died by his hand.”

Bai Ji’s expression remained calm, yet for the first time, a hint of fear colored her tone.

Su Mu raised an eyebrow in surprise, his gossip-loving spirit burning fiercely.

But Bai Ji lowered her head, appearing unwilling to speak further.

Seeing this, Su Mu didn’t press. He simply instructed,

“Bai Ji, prepare a guest room.”

After all, there was still a guest; he couldn’t let Katusha stand around outside with them.

“Yes.”

Su Mu smiled at Katusha. “Sasha, it’s late. Why don’t you rest here tonight?”

“Thank you, Mu Ge. I apologize for the trouble.”

Katusha hadn’t rested properly for days, constantly on edge. Now, with Su Mu by her side, she finally relaxed a little, and a wave of drowsiness washed over her, causing her to yawn repeatedly.

Su Mu arranged for a maid to escort Katusha to her prepared room, then went to take a bath himself.

The dungeon had been damp and foul, leaving a strange odor clinging to him after his visit.

This made Su Mu, accustomed to cleanliness, feel rather uncomfortable.

By the time everything was done, it was already close to midnight.

Su Mu lay half-reclined on his bed, recalling all the events that had transpired since his visit to the royal palace that day.

One point, in particular, had always puzzled him.

Why would the King know that another soul resided within his son’s body?

He hadn’t even met the King since transmigrating, and he believed his fabricated amnesia excuse should have been flawless. Yet, after only a single encounter with Louis, the cunning King had detected his abnormality and was so certain he was the embodiment of a demon.

But why was Louis so convinced he was a demon?

The King’s certainty was too resolute, his perception of Su Mu unwavering. That attitude was as if…

As if his soul’s transmigration, the arrival of him, this demon, had been summoned by Louis himself.

This absurd thought flashed through his mind, and Su Mu, fresh from his bath, broke out in a cold sweat.

He furrowed his brows, pondering in confusion.

Suddenly, his gaze caught sight of the little fox in a cage nearby.

‘Pera…’

He had almost forgotten about her. This fox had watched him grow up and should know something about King Louis’s strangeness.

Su Mu directly asked, “Pera, do you know about the existence of demons?”

Startled from her sweet dream, the little fox opened her eyes, clearly annoyed. “Demons? You mean devils, right? They are a type of demon, usually possessing incredibly strong mental and life force. They mostly live in the southern part of the continent; we rarely even see a single strand of their fur around here. Why do you ask?”

“The King suspects I’m a demon.”

Su Mu spread his hands helplessly.

Pera froze, her two fox eyes wide, speechless for a long moment.

Su Mu continued, “As you said, since demons are so rare, why would my father insist I’m a demon? Or did he encounter one at some point in the past?”

Pera remained silent, still not speaking.

“You also said that my childhood personality was very similar to how I am now, which means something must have happened in between to cause a sudden change in my character, turning me into the cruel, ruthless person rumored throughout the capital. I suspect this might also be related to my father’s encounter with a demon, right?”

“Also, Roland and the others told me that ten years ago, when I was eight, a disaster struck the capital, causing their families to send them abroad for several years to seek refuge. What exactly was that disaster?”

A barrage of questions met with no response, only making Pera grow more and more silent.

Su Mu could no longer tolerate it. The confusion that had plagued him finally erupted in a torrent that night. He didn’t want to wander around like a headless chicken anymore, agonizing over thoughts for ages with no answers.

He had investigated much, racked his brains, yet in the end, he was still utterly bewildered, unable to grasp anything.

He could no longer endure this torment of uncertainty.

Su Mu couldn’t wait. He needed to know the truth of everything, now, immediately!

Su Mu’s expression turned cold as he summoned the silver chains of the contract, pulling the little fox towards him. He commanded,

“Pera, tell me, what exactly happened ten years ago!”

The silver chains began to take effect, a flash of brilliant light appearing. A pained expression crossed the little fox’s face, but she still remained silent.

“Speak! What is the truth of that disaster!”

Su Mu roared, clutching the chains tightly, veins bulging on his forehead.

Even brighter light erupted from the chains.

Suddenly, something unexpected occurred.

The silver chains, right before Su Mu’s eyes, disintegrated, turning into dust and scattering from his hands.

Su Mu was stunned.

‘Why? Why did this happen?’

‘Could Furei, that gentle and kind woman, have deceived him?!’

Su Mu clenched his fists, a surge of betrayed anger swelling in his heart.

He finally understood why, despite signing a contract with Pera, no true bond had formed.

Freed from the chains’ restraint, the little fox finally reverted to her previous form as a beautiful older sister.

Pera sat on Su Mu, guiltily embracing the stiff Su Mu. “Your Highness, I am sorry. Please forgive me, I cannot speak of it. Please wait a little longer; everything you wish to know will eventually be revealed.”

With that, Pera transformed back into her little fox form and, with a shimmer, vanished from the bedroom.

In the empty bedroom, only Su Mu remained, sitting alone on the bed, a sorrowful and desolate expression on his face, unmoving for a long time.
