Chapter 17: The Last Option and Unexpected Turns

“Hey, Your Highness, speak up! Don’t think you can get away with playing dumb!”

Listening to the familiar, petulant voice in his ear, Su Mu rubbed his temples and exhaled a long, weary breath.

On the screen before him, only one option remained illuminated.

‘What kind of ridiculous options does this idiotic system provide? Each choice can only be selected once, and it even restricts my movements?!’

‘How could Option Three possibly be the correct one? It’s utterly inconceivable!’

Su Mu cursed under his breath.

He was determined to see what outcome selecting the third option would bring.

“I’m tired. You two carry on; I’m going to rest first.”

Su Mu stated, his tone aloof and detached, as if the matter had nothing to do with him.

“Eh~ How could you~”

Laura pouted, clearly dissatisfied.

Bai Ji snorted coldly, her gaze retracting from Laura before stiffly turning to Su Mu.

“Your Highness, let us return to the bedchamber to rest.”

Su Mu was dumbfounded, watching the two immediately cease their argument, and observing Bai Ji, who remained surprisingly calm.

‘No, why did they stop so quickly? Weren’t they just moments ago engaged in a fierce, inseparable quarrel? This makes no sense!’

‘A fix, it must be a fix!’

He would absolutely never admit that his analysis was flawed!

As for Bai Ji’s suggestion, Su Mu, of course, could not agree.

A wicked vixen was awaiting them in the bedchamber.

Returning to the bedchamber? That would be like a wolf entering a tiger’s den, or a turtle walking into a jar.

Su Mu shook his head. “A’Bai, I’m tired. Let’s just rest here for today.”

Laura seized the opportunity, responding triumphantly, “That’s right! Let’s have a good rest here today, Your Highness. I’ll take excellent care of you~”

After speaking, she cast a provocative glance at Bai Ji.

However, Bai Ji remained rooted to the spot, completely unresponsive.

Her mind was currently consumed by the nickname Su Mu had just used for her.

‘A’Bai… A’Bai…’

‘His Highness actually called her A’Bai directly.’

‘Even after His Highness lost his memory, she had never told him about this nickname, yet he had spoken it aloud.’

‘Could this mean that even though His Highness had lost his memory, even though he had forgotten everything, he still held her firmly in his heart?’

The thought brought an uncontrollable surge of happiness to Bai Ji, and she completely ignored the annoying buzzing of the fly in her ear.

Bai Ji smiled, gently covering Su Mu with a thin blanket as he lay on the bed. She whispered softly, “Very well. Your Highness, please rest well here. I will guard you by your side.”

Su Mu: ???

‘What happened to this woman? Why did she suddenly become so gentle? Wasn’t she just moments ago a cold, man-eating specter?’

‘I don’t understand…’

Having died twice in succession, he was already mentally exhausted.

Lying on the bed, he closed his eyes, and sleepiness immediately overcame his body. Yet, a deep unease in his heart made him resist falling asleep, frantically fighting against the encroaching drowsiness.

After all, the three options had been used up. If he failed this time, the final outcome would be unpredictable.

Su Mu blinked his eyes repeatedly, attempting to resist the lure of the Sandman.

Suddenly, a pair of gentle hands covered his.

It was Bai Ji.

Bai Ji knelt by the bed, leaning in to whisper softly into his ear, “Your Highness, I am here.”

‘So warm…’

A strange sense of security blossomed in Su Mu’s heart.

His struggles slowly subsided, and he finally drifted into slumber.

Su Mu did not know that after he fell asleep, his hands unconsciously gripped Bai Ji’s in return.

Watching the interaction between Su Mu and Bai Ji, Laura pursed her lips in a slightly sour expression, but she did not leave.

Time flowed silently onward.

Bai Ji remained kneeling by the bed, still holding Su Mu’s hand tightly, without the slightest movement.

Suddenly, she looked at Laura, who was mixing a healing potion nearby, and asked softly, “Why aren’t you leaving?”

“Why should I leave? I still need to stay here and take care of my fiancé.”

Laura glanced at her, her movements fluid and unhindered as she worked.

“Lower your voice! If you wake His Highness, I won’t forgive you.”

Bai Ji’s threatening whisper possessed a strange, subtle cuteness.

Laura chuckled. As a bottle of potion was completed in her hand, she stood up, clapped her hands, and said,

“You can stay there kneeling. I’m going to cook a delicious bowl of noodles for my His Highness. He didn’t eat dinner, so he’ll surely be starving when he wakes up. When he sees the noodles personally cooked by his beautiful and virtuous fiancée, he’ll be overjoyed, hmph hmph~”

Bai Ji: !!!

‘Damn it, I was careless!’

Bai Ji looked at her hands, which Su Mu still held tightly, torn with indecision.

She watched Laura’s triumphant departing back with reluctance, but ultimately chose to remain kneeling here dutifully, quietly guarding her Highness.

The magic lamp in the room suddenly flickered twice.

Bai Ji quickly reached out to shield Su Mu’s eyes, then cast a cold gaze at the glass lamp on the ceiling.

‘This garbage magic lamp needs to be replaced,’ Bai Ji thought.

“Bai Ji.”

Suddenly, Su Mu’s slightly hoarse voice reached her ears.

Bai Ji quickly looked at Su Mu, who was rubbing his sleepy eyes and sitting up.

“Your Highness.”

Bai Ji gently called out to Su Mu, all the while thinking about how she would dismantle that accursed magic lamp later.

“A’Bai, where’s the restroom?” Su Mu asked.

“Your Highness, I will lead you.”

Bai Ji helped Su Mu to his feet. Her legs were still trembling, yet her steps remained steady as she supported him.

****

Bai Ji supported the empty air in her hands, slowly walking out of the infirmary.

Su Mu, however, was still sleeping soundly on the bed.

Then, a pink figure slowly solidified before Su Mu’s bed, eventually transforming into the fox-girl Pera.

She gazed at Su Mu on the bed, muttering to herself, “Little one, I didn’t expect you to fall asleep here. You’ve certainly kept this elder sister waiting…”

Pera, dressed in light clothing, reached out and gently pressed her hand to Su Mu’s forehead. Her tail curled upwards, and heart-shaped patterns appeared in her eyes.

She still harbored suspicions about Su Mu.

What if Su Mu wasn’t suffering from amnesia, but had completely resisted her mental-reading charm?

While such a possibility was small, it was by no means impossible.

Her task was to eliminate any variables for her master.

Pera prepared to cast mental control on Su Mu. If it succeeded, it would confirm that Su Mu indeed had amnesia. But if she failed, the outcome would be quite intriguing.

Just as she was about to cast her spell, a strong sense of danger suddenly bloomed in her heart.

She felt a chill run down her spine and instinctively rolled to the side.

Almost simultaneously, a sharp sword light struck the spot where she had been moments before.

Bai Ji stood there, sword in hand, glaring furiously at her.

Pera looked at the spot where the sword light had fallen, her heart trembling with fear.

Fortunately, her reaction had been swift, or else she would have been sliced in half by now.

She looked at Bai Ji, frowning.

‘How did this woman break free from the illusion so quickly?’

Pera concentrated, quickly casting an illusion on Bai Ji once more.

Bai Ji’s eyes immediately became clouded.

Pera breathed a sigh of relief. Suddenly, however, she felt another pang of alarm.

Bai Ji had attacked her position again, with precise accuracy.

Pera dodged clumsily.

Seeing Bai Ji’s eyes had returned to their clear state, her face was filled with disbelief.

‘How was this possible? Why, why wasn’t her illusion working?!’

As a top-tier fox clan member known as a master of illusions, she could trap even a Sword Demigod in an illusion for a period of time.

Yet Bai Ji was merely a Sword Saint. How could she be unaffected by her illusions?

Suddenly, Pera realized something and sharply looked outside the infirmary door.

In the shadows of the night, a pink-haired girl wearing a kitchen apron slowly peeked her head out, playfully sticking out her tongue at her.
