Join the ServerShe knew about the penguin.
She knew Shen Nian had come.
She knew about “last night’s fall.”
She knew everything.
But everything she knew was false.
Qiansui whispered in her ear:
“The memories she gave your daytime self… they’re so complete… she even knows about Shen Nian mending the penguin…”
Su Yutao said nothing.
She just listened as the gentle footsteps came from the bedroom.
The sound of the medical kit being placed on the coffee table.
Lin Qingxue sat down beside her.
“Give me your hand.”
Su Yutao extended her arm, swollen and glistening.
Lin Qingxue gently took her hand and began to re-wrap the bandage.
Her movements were very soft.
A thousand times softer than the one last night.
But Su Yutao still felt pain.
The swelling from the dislocation—even a light touch was like a needle prick.
She gritted her teeth and remained silent.
Lin Qingxue looked at the deformed, swollen arm, her brows furrowed tightly:
“How did it get this swollen…”
She gently pressed on the bone.
Su Yutao flinched, a stifled whimper escaping her throat.
Lin Qingxue’s hand froze.
She was silent for two seconds.
Then she said:
“This isn’t right… it doesn’t look like a simple fall…”
Su Yutao went rigid.
Lin Qingxue looked up at her:
“Are you sure it was a fall?”
Su Yutao was stunned.
She didn’t know how to answer.
She could only nod.
Nod frantically.
Lin Qingxue looked at her like that, paused for a moment, and then sighed softly:
“Alright, let’s ice it first.”
She went to the fridge, took out an ice pack, wrapped it in a towel, and placed it on Su Yutao’s arm.
It was cold.
The pain receded slightly.
Su Yutao curled up on the sofa, clutching Qiansui, motionless.
Lin Qingxue sat beside her, watching.
After a while, she suddenly spoke:
“Haven’t you been sleeping well these past few days?”
Su Yutao froze.
Lin Qingxue said:
“I can see you have dark circles. I heard you fall last night—was it because you were too tired?”
Su Yutao didn’t know whether to nod or shake her head.
She hadn’t fallen last night.
She had been tormented by that person all night.
But she couldn’t say that.
She could only lower her head.
Lin Qingxue took that as confirmation and sighed softly:
“It’s my fault. I’ve been at home with you these past few days; I should have watched you more closely.”
Hearing this, Su Yutao felt something clog her heart.
At home with me these past few days?
You haven’t been home at all.
You’ve been out killing.
It was someone else who stayed with me here.
But she couldn’t say it.
She could only hug Qiansui, curl up, and tremble.
Lin Qingxue thought she was in pain and gently patted her back:
“Just bear with it; the ice will help in a bit.”
Su Yutao nodded.
Qiansui whispered in her ear:
“She’s so gentle… but she doesn’t know anything…”
Su Yutao said nothing.
She just stared into the eternal darkness.
—
Ice applied for half an hour.
Lin Qingxue removed the ice pack, reapplied medicine, and re-bandaged Su Yutao’s arm.
Her movements were still so gentle.
When she finished, she stood up:
“Are you hungry? I’ll make breakfast.”
Su Yutao nodded.
Lin Qingxue went into the kitchen.
The sound of pots and pans.
The sound of the faucet.
The sizzle of frying eggs.
Su Yutao curled up on the sofa, listening to those sounds.
Ordinary.
Warm.
Like any normal morning.
But her hand still hurt.
Swollen, throbbing.
Reminding her of what happened last night.
Qiansui whispered in her ear:
“She really doesn’t know anything… she thinks she’s been taking care of you the whole time…”
Su Yutao said nothing.
She just held Qiansui tighter.
—
Breakfast was ready.
Lin Qingxue came out with a bowl, sat down next to Su Yutao, and said:
“Come on, eat.”
She picked up a spoon, scooped up some porridge, and brought it to Su Yutao’s lips.
Su Yutao opened her mouth.
The porridge was warm.
It had the fragrance of egg drops.
As she fed her, Lin Qingxue said:
“Are you bored staying at home these days? When I finish my class, I’ll take you out for a walk?”
Su Yutao was startled.
Class?
Lin Qingxue said:
“Yeah, I have to go to school today. I’ve taken a few days off to take care of you; if I skip any more, the teacher will scold me.”
She paused.
“But don’t worry, I’ll be back in the afternoon. Niannian will come by at noon to bring you lunch.”
When Su Yutao heard “Niannian,” she felt a slight relief.
Shen Nian.
That fierce but attentive person.
The one who fed her and mended her penguin.
Seeing her expression, Lin Qingxue smiled:
“What? Are you happier hearing that Niannian is coming than that I’m back?”
Su Yutao didn’t know how to answer.
She just lowered her head and continued drinking the porridge.
Lin Qingxue finished feeding her breakfast, took the bowl away, and then went to change clothes.
After a while, she came out.
Footsteps stopped by the sofa.
A hand gently ruffled Su Yutao’s hair:
“I’m leaving now. Be good.”
Su Yutao nodded.
The door opened and then closed.
The footsteps faded away.
The room fell silent.
Only Su Yutao remained.
She curled up on the sofa, hugging Qiansui.
Qiansui whispered:
“She’s gone… the daytime her is gone…”
Su Yutao said nothing.
She just stared into the eternal darkness.
Her hand still hurt.
Swollen, throbbing.
But what hurt more was her heart.
That gentle person knew nothing.
She thought she had taken care of her for days.
She thought she loved her dearly.
She knew nothing…
She knew nothing…
—
On the other side.
School.
Lin Qingxue walked into the classroom and found a seat to sit down.
A classmate nearby saw her and greeted her:
“Lin Qingxue! You’re finally here! Where have you been these past few days?”
Lin Qingxue smiled:
“Just some family stuff; I took a few days off.”
The person leaned in:
“What happened? Was it serious?”
Lin Qingxue shook her head:
“Nothing major, just taking care of someone.”
The person wanted to ask more, but the bell rang.
The teacher walked in.
Lin Qingxue opened her textbook and started listening.
Everything was normal.
Like any ordinary university student.
During the break.
Lin Qingxue was looking down at her phone when a voice came from above:
“Xiaoxue!”
She looked up.
Shen Nian stood before her, holding two bottles of water. She handed one to Lin Qingxue:
“Here, for you.”
Lin Qingxue took it:
“Thanks.”
Shen Nian sat down next to her, crossing her legs:
“How’s that little mute at your place?”
Lin Qingxue took a sip of water:
“She’s okay, but her hand is swollen.”
Shen Nian was taken aback:
“Swollen? What happened?”
Lin Qingxue said:
“She got up to use the bathroom last night and fell.”
Shen Nian frowned:
“Fell? Is it serious?”
Lin Qingxue nodded:
“Pretty swollen. I told her to go to the hospital, but she refused.”
Shen Nian clicked her tongue:
“This little blind girl is pretty stubborn.”
She paused, then asked:
“And the dog bite wound? How is it?”
Lin Qingxue was confused:
“What dog bite wound?”
Shen Nian was equally confused.
She looked at Lin Qingxue, brow furrowed:
“The one on her arm. The dog bite. Didn’t you see it? Several teeth marks and bloody holes.”
Lin Qingxue’s expression went blank for a moment.
Then she said slowly:
“Her arm… has dog bite wounds?”
