Su Yutao’s mouth twitched. She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

What good was being pretty?

Blind and mute, no matter how beautiful, she was still disabled.

She closed her eyes—though they were already shut.

Her mind started churning again.

She thought of last night’s killer.

That voice, cold and indifferent, like the edge of a blade.

“All patched up, what little beggar is this?”

“A blind and mute little beggar.”

“Get lost.”

And then she was let go.

Why?

Maybe because she was too pitiful—not worth killing?

Or because she was too dirty—not worth touching?

Su Yutao didn’t know.

She only knew that that person had killed the screaming woman, right in front of her.

Stabbed her dead.

Steady, calm.

Then that person left.

She survived.

She survived for no reason.

Then she met Lin Qingxue.

Helped for no reason.

And now she sat here, waiting for no reason.

Her life, from last night onward, had become a string of inexplicable events.

Su Yutao hugged the medicine bag tighter.

The medicine was still there.

The buns were finished.

At least that person had left her the medicine.

If she really didn’t come back, would this bag of medicine last her another day?

She didn’t know.

She knew nothing.

She only knew that the only thing she could do now was sit here and wait.

Wait for someone who might not come.

Wait for a miracle.

But miracles never happened to orphans.

Su Yutao remembered when she was little, once she had a high fever, reaching forty degrees.

The head of the orphanage stayed with her all night, feeding her medicine, wiping her down, muttering, “It’ll be fine, it’ll be fine.”

The next morning, her fever broke.

The head said it was the heavens protecting her.

She asked, who are the heavens?

The head said, the heavens are the one who protects good children.

Then she asked, am I a good child?

The head said, you are the best child.

Now she wanted to ask, heavens, have I stopped being a good child?

Why have you abandoned me?

Su Yutao buried her face deeper.

The sun still shone.

The sounds around her still rang.

She curled up on the steps, hugging the medicine bag, like a discarded doll.

She didn’t know how long it had been.

Maybe a long, long time.

So long she felt like she was about to fall asleep.

Then she heard footsteps.

Very light.

Very fast.

Running from afar.

Closer and closer.

Closer and closer.

Then—

“Su Yutao!”

That voice rang out.

Soft and gentle, with panting breaths, as if she had run a long way.

“Sorry, sorry, I’m late! The teacher held me up after class, I ran all the way here!”

Su Yutao’s head shot up.

Before her eyes was eternal darkness.

But she heard that voice crouch down, right in front of her.

A hand reached over and gently grasped hers.

That hand was a little cold, a little damp—probably from running sweat.

That voice said:

“You’ve been waiting here all this time?”

Su Yutao froze.

She opened her mouth.

No sound came out.

But she nodded.

Nodded hard.

A second of silence.

Then that hand tightened a little more.

That voice said softly:

“I’m sorry.”

“I won’t make you wait this long again.”

Lin Qingxue’s voice was still in her ears, gentle and warm, with post-run breaths.

Su Yutao held that hand and didn’t let go.

She didn’t know what to say—anyway, she couldn’t speak. She just held on, like grasping a lifeline.

After a moment, Lin Qingxue gently pulled her hand. Su Yutao snapped back to reality and quickly released it.

But Lin Qingxue didn’t withdraw her hand; instead, she took Su Yutao’s hand in return.

“Your hands are still so cold. Did you take the medicine?”

Su Yutao shook her head.

“Why not?”

Su Yutao pointed to the medicine bag, mimed tearing it open, then spread her hands—couldn’t open it, didn’t know how to take it.

Lin Qingxue froze for a second, then let out a soft laugh:

“Sorry, I forgot you can’t see.”

With a rustling sound, the medicine bag was opened.

“One pill each time, twice a day. Take one now.”

A tiny pill was placed in Su Yutao’s palm.

Then came the sound of rummaging, and Su Yutao felt a bottle-like object placed in her hand.

“Here, drink slowly.”

Su Yutao stuffed the pill into her mouth and swallowed it with water.

The water was cool.

But better than nothing.

Lin Qingxue crouched beside her, silent.

Su Yutao didn’t know what to do either, so she just sat there holding the bottle.

After a moment of silence.

Lin Qingxue spoke, her voice hesitant:

“Um… I have no class this afternoon.”

Su Yutao was stunned.

No class?

Then how did she…

Lin Qingxue continued:

“I came over at noon because I wanted to ask you… what are you going to do next?”

Su Yutao’s hand tightening on the bottle.

What to do?

She didn’t know.

She knew nothing.

Lin Qingxue seemed to realize this question was hard to answer, and her voice grew softer:

“I mean… you can’t stay here forever, right? Your fever hasn’t gone away, and it’s going to rain tonight. You…”

She paused.

“Do you have any family? Or… anyone you know?”

Su Yutao shook her head.

Lin Qingxue was silent for a few seconds.

“Then… do you want to go to the police?”

The police?

Su Yutao was taken aback.

Go to the police for what? Report a crime? Say she was a transmigrator? Or that someone was killed in front of her last night?

No, she couldn’t mention last night.

That killer from yesterday could be anywhere. If she went to the police and they actually investigated, and the killer found out it was her who reported it—

Su Yutao shook her head frantically.

Lin Qingxue seemed startled by her reaction:

“You don’t want to go? Why?”

Su Yutao opened her mouth.

She couldn’t explain.

She just kept shaking her head.

Lin Qingxue was silent for a moment, her voice troubled:

“But… I don’t know what to do either. You’re out here alone, you can’t see, you can’t speak, your fever hasn’t gone down… This won’t do.”

Su Yutao hung her head, unsure how to react.

She knew Lin Qingxue was right.

She couldn’t stay outside forever.

But where could she go?

She couldn’t go to the police. A shelter?

She didn’t know where it was. Even if she found one, as a blind and mute person, could she even explain who she was?

She had no ID.

No identity at all.

In this world, she might as well not exist.

Lin Qingxue seemed to be thinking the same thing.

A long silence.

Then Lin Qingxue’s voice rang out again, with a hint of hesitation:

“How about… you come back with me first?”

Su Yutao’s head shot up.

Go back with her?

To her home?

Lin Qingxue quickly added:

“Just… stay temporarily, until you get better. I live close to the school, just me alone—”

She stopped mid-sentence.

Then her voice turned a little embarrassed:

“No, I mean… the apartment I rent, I live there alone, no one else. You don’t have to worry.”
