Join the ServerSu Yutao was stunned.
Wait, I’m already this miserable, and the main storyline hasn’t even started?
Blind from the moment I crossed over, mute too. Threatened by a murderer, beaten, bitten by a dog—
And you’re telling me the main storyline hasn’t started?
She couldn’t help but ask in her mind:
When does the main storyline start? Can’t you just look at the plot ahead?
Qiansui was silent for a moment.
Then their voice carried a hint of grievance:
“Um… I’m still new. I don’t have that many permissions…”
“It seems I can’t see… I can only see as much as the storyline has progressed…”
Su Yutao: …
So you’re just a useless system?
Qiansui panicked:
“No, no! I can’t see the plot, but I can talk! I can be your eyes and guide you! When you came out of the bath earlier, didn’t I help you dodge a few times?”
Su Yutao thought about it.
That was true.
If Qiansui hadn’t warned her, she would have been caught by Zhou Ye long ago.
Though she was caught in the end…
But at least she dodged a few times.
Just as she was thinking, she suddenly felt herself being set down.
Shen Nian carried her out of the car—they had arrived?
No, they had just gotten in. The car hadn’t moved yet.
Shen Nian just placed her in the seat, adjusted her position, and fastened her seatbelt.
Her movements were gentle and meticulous.
Su Yutao felt the hands busying around her, pulling the seatbelt, clicking the buckle, and even straightening the little penguin in her arms.
Then Shen Nian returned to the driver’s seat and started the engine.
The car moved.
Smooth and slow.
Su Yutao curled up in the seat, holding Qiansui, listening to the wind outside.
Suddenly, Qiansui let out an “Eh?”
What’s wrong?
Qiansui said:
“This Shen Nian… her family seems super rich.”
Su Yutao was taken aback.
How do you know?
Qiansui’s voice carried a hint of surprise:
“I just checked… the neighborhood she lives in is the most expensive in this city.”
“She has her own driver’s license, a property deed, and all kinds of certificates… scuba diving license, skiing license, pilot license…”
Pilot license?
Su Yutao was dumbfounded.
“Yeah,” Qiansui said. “She got a private pilot license. Also piano grade ten, gold medal in painting competitions, foreign language translation certificate…”
Qiansui paused and summarized:
“In short, she’s a super all-rounder.”
Su Yutao fell silent.
She recalled the image of Shen Nian kicking down the door.
Then the image of her draping the coat over her.
Then the image of her carrying her into the car.
(All of the above were imagined, because she couldn’t see.)
That fierce, cursing Shen Nian.
Was actually a wealthy all-rounder?
She couldn’t help but ask in her mind:
Can’t you just give me a clear character relationship chart?
Who is the female lead, who is the villain, who is rich, who is poor, who is good, who is bad—
Qiansui said, aggrieved:
“I don’t know…”
“At least let me get close to them, know what they look like, then I can see their stories…”
Su Yutao: …
So you can see Shen Nian’s story now?
“I can.”
“But only a little. I know she’s rich, all-rounder, and she’s best friends with your Lin Qingxue. As for the rest… well, it’ll have to wait.”
Su Yutao leaned back in the seat, holding Qiansui, staring into the eternal darkness.
The car drove steadily through the night.
The wind outside whispered softly, occasionally mixed with the sound of other cars passing, tires rolling over the road, rustling.
Su Yutao curled up in the passenger seat, holding Qiansui, motionless.
She didn’t know where they were going.
She didn’t know where Shen Nian was taking her.
But she dared not ask—and couldn’t ask anyway.
Shen Nian drove in silence for a while.
Then she spoke:
“Cold?”
Su Yutao was startled.
Cold?
Only then did she realize—she was wearing only Shen Nian’s coat, with nothing underneath. The bath towel had long since fallen off somewhere.
She nodded.
A rustling sound.
Shen Nian kept one hand on the wheel, reached back with the other, and grabbed something.
A soft bundle was tossed onto her.
“Put that on. It’s a blanket from the back seat.”
Su Yutao fumbled to unfold the blanket and wrapped it around herself.
Warm.
Soft.
Shen Nian glanced at the penguin in her arms.
“You’re still holding that thing?”
Su Yutao hugged the penguin tighter.
Shen Nian clicked her tongue.
“It’s soaking wet, cotton is about to fall out. Aren’t you disgusted?”
Su Yutao shook her head.
Shen Nian looked again.
The penguin was indeed a sorry sight—soaking wet, deflated in a big chunk, cotton oozing out of the tear, with an indescribable smell.
She frowned.
But she said nothing more.
After driving a bit further, Shen Nian suddenly asked:
“Do you like stuffed animals?”
Su Yutao was taken aback.
Like?
No.
She had to hold one.
But she couldn’t explain.
She could only nod.
Shen Nian was silent for a moment.
Then she said:
“I have a lot at home. New, clean, good ones. I’ll give you one when we get back.”
Su Yutao shook her head.
She hugged the penguin tighter.
Shen Nian looked at her:
“You don’t want one?”
Su Yutao nodded—no.
Shen Nian raised an eyebrow:
“You want this broken one?”
Su Yutao nodded.
Shen Nian was silent for a few seconds.
Then she let out a soft laugh, a little helpless.
“You little mute, you sure are stubborn.”
Su Yutao lowered her head, not reacting.
Shen Nian asked again:
“Where did this thing come from? I remember Xiao Xue didn’t have anything like this at home?”
Su Yutao opened her mouth.
She couldn’t answer.
She could only point outside—outside.
Shen Nian was startled:
“You picked it up from outside?”
Su Yutao nodded.
Shen Nian’s expression was complicated.
“From a trash can?”
Su Yutao thought about it.
It seemed like a trash can?
She nodded.
Shen Nian fell silent.
After a long while, she spoke, her tone carrying something hard to describe:
“A broken doll picked up from a trash can, and you hold it like a treasure.”
“Is this how you were when Xiao Xue picked you up?”
Su Yutao was stunned.
She remembered that morning, in that corner, Lin Qingxue crouched down and asked, “Why are you squatting here alone?”
Remembered the bowl of hot soy milk.
Those two meat buns.
That warm hand.
She lowered her head.
Burying her face in the penguin’s fluff.
Qiansui’s voice sounded in her ear, only she could hear:
“Hey, hey, hey, don’t bury me… I’m not dry yet… still wet…”
Su Yutao didn’t move.
Qiansui mumbled softly:
“Fine, fine, go ahead… I can tell you’re in a bad mood…”
Shen Nian glanced at the little blind girl curled up in the seat.
Only half a face and the white wet hair were visible from under the blanket.
She held that broken penguin in her arms.
Like a wounded little animal.
She looked away.
Continued driving.
After a moment, she said softly:
“Get some sleep. I’ll wake you when we get there.”
Su Yutao didn’t move.
But she closed her eyes—though they were already closed.
The car fell quiet.
Only the low hum of the engine and the wind outside.
Qiansui’s voice sounded softly in her ear:
“This Shen Nian… she seems pretty nice…”
Su Yutao didn’t answer.
But she hugged the penguin a little tighter.
