There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line.

Then a man’s voice came through, dripping with sarcasm from the start.

“Luo Xiaoning, so you’re still alive, huh.”

“Anyone would think you got killed by an enemy.”

Luo Xiaoning froze for a second. She took the phone away from her ear, glanced at the caller ID, then pressed it back. Her voice was still hoarse from sleep.

“Oh… it’s you. The contact guy with nothing better to do, calling me at this hour. What do you want?”

“Spit it out or I’m going back to sleep.”

The man choked on her words. Frustration seeped into his voice.

“With your sorry ass, you can’t even kill someone. I don’t know how you got into the organization.”

“Your mission completion rate is dead last, and the one you did finish was because the rank third big shot happened to pass by and help you.”

Luo Xiaoning held the phone a bit farther away, covered her other ear, and curled deeper into the blanket. Her voice came out muffled.

“Can you get to the point? If not, I’m hanging up.”

“This is precious sleep time, not time for your bullshit.”

“Anyway, I completed one mission this month. If you’re so great, fire me. I’d be happy.”

“I’ll go straight to international labor arbitration and get a huge severance package.”

The line went silent for a few seconds.

Luo Xiaoning could sense him taking deep breaths, trying to control his temper.

Then he sighed, and his voice softened.

“The higher-ups have a mission for you.”

“You’re to monitor someone in the organization.”

Luo Xiaoning’s jaw dropped. She shot up from the blankets, eyes wide.

“Wait, what?! The person assigning me this mission, are they human? You want a loser like me to spy on someone?”

“And if you’re watching them, they must be suspicious.”

“Shouldn’t you just arrange for them to be taken out?”

“But you’re sending someone to watch, and with my combat power, I’d be walking to my death.”

“Hang on, you’re not actually trying to get me killed, are you?”

“You want me dead so you can stop being my personal operator and serve someone else?”

“Even you look down on me? You think I’m a total waste?”

She spoke faster and faster, her voice rising like a cat with its tail stepped on.

The man waited for her to finish before speaking slowly. “It’s the one who was ranked third before, Lin Xue.”

Luo Xiaoning’s voice caught in her throat.

Her eyes widened further. Her mouth hung open, unable to close for a long moment.

Lin Xue?

The cool, handsome woman who dropped from the sky last time and slit her target’s throat with one slash just when she was about to get killed!

Luo Xiaoning would never forget that scene. It was her first mission, and the one where she nearly died.

The organization had given her a simple job, get close to a loli-con underground casino boss, use her physical advantages to gain his trust, then find a chance to kill him.

The target was a man in his forties, balding, with a beer belly, yellowed teeth when he smiled. His eyes went straight when he saw Luo Xiaoning.

He took her to meet another boss, saying they were ‘discussing business.’

Standing next to that boss was a tall woman, about 1.7 meters, in a black trench coat. Her hair was tied in a low ponytail. Her features were cold and beautiful, expressionless, like an unsheathed blade.

Luo Xiaoning sneaked several glances at her, thinking, ‘She’s so cool, like a female assassin in the movies.’

The woman didn’t even look at her. She just stood by the boss’s side, arms crossed, like a statue.

They talked for a long time.

Luo Xiaoning sat next to the bald man, listening to him boast and tell disgusting dirty jokes. She forced herself to smile through the nausea.

She kept waiting for an opportunity.

The bald man stood up, said he was going to the bathroom.

Luo Xiaoning followed, claiming she needed to go too.

No one else was in the bathroom. The bald man stood at the urinal. Luo Xiaoning pulled a knife from her sleeve, rushed up, and stabbed.

She aimed for the heart, but she overestimated her jumping ability.

The blade sank into his side. Blood sprayed, splattering her hand.

The bald man screamed. He turned and saw her. Confusion and disbelief in his eyes turned to fury.

He grabbed her neck and pinned her against the wall. Luo Xiaoning’s feet left the ground. Her face turned red. She tried to pry his fingers off, but couldn’t.

The knife was still stuck in his side, out of her reach.

She thought she was going to die.

Then she heard noises from outside.

The sound of fighting. The sound of a blade slicing through flesh. Steady, calm, one after another, like chopping vegetables.

Screams, grunts, bodies hitting the floor.

The bald man froze. His grip loosened. Luo Xiaoning slipped out of his hands, fell to the floor, clutching her neck and gasping.

The bathroom door was kicked open.

The cool woman stood in the doorway.

Her trench coat was splattered with blood. Blood was on her face too. She held a knife in her hand, still dripping.

But her eyes were calm, as if looking at dead people. She said softly:

“So there are two more here. Good thing I don’t have to keep lurking. I can go back and find that blind brat.”

“Zhou Ye, when I get back, I’ll kill you. Touching my things.”

The bald man’s face went white when he saw her. He backed up two steps and hit the sink.

“You, you’re…”

She didn’t let him finish. She walked over and stabbed him in the throat.

The bald man clutched his neck. Blood spurted between his fingers. His eyes bulged wide. He slowly slid down and stopped moving.

She pulled out the knife, wiped it on his clothes, then turned to look at Luo Xiaoning.

Luo Xiaoning was huddled on the ground, shaking all over. Her face was covered in blood. She didn’t know if it was hers or someone else’s.

She saw the woman walking toward her, knife still in hand, eyes cold.

Her mind went blank. All she wanted was to survive. She opened her mouth, her voice shrill and trembling.

“Don’t kill me don’t kill me don’t kill me! I, I I I’m a state employee!”

“Killing me is illegal, no wait you’re already breaking the law by killing!”

“Sis! Please don’t kill me! I’m just an undercover agent!”

The woman stopped.

She looked down at the cowering Luo Xiaoning. Her brow twitched slightly.

“Undercover? Which organization are you with?”

Luo Xiaoning was stunned.

Which organization? She opened her mouth, her mind a mess.

‘I, I’m… well… what’s our organization called?’

‘Uh… I forgot… but it’s a government job!’

‘Right right, you can’t kill me! If you do, the people in my organization will avenge me!’

The woman stared at her dumbfounded expression for two seconds.

Then she said, “What’s your number?”

Luo Xiaoning blurted out, “350234.”

The woman chuckled softly.

It was a light, short laugh, tinged with an unreadable meaning.

“350 group, no wonder.”

“Sure enough, with a useless piece of shit like Zhou Ye, his team members are just as useless.”
