“What if you actually say ‘stop’ and make this violent maniac actually stop?”

Su Yutao thought that might work.

‘Say “stop,” what if she actually stops?’

‘Even if she doesn’t, uh, can you at least cooperate?’

‘Otherwise, if she sees no reaction from me, she’ll definitely get suspicious.’

Lin Qingxue saw Su Yutao open her mouth as if trying to say something.

She frowned, pulled Su Yutao in front of her, and leaned in to look.

That little blind girl’s mouth opened and closed, her throat making “heh, heh” sounds like she was forcing something out.

Then she heard a word, forced out from that little blind girl’s throat, hoarse and broken, like sandpaper on iron — “Mas”.

Su Yutao tremblingly forced out that word, “ter.”

Then her throat seemed blocked, making “hehehehe” sounds like phlegm stuck, like a leaky bellows, unable to produce the second word.

Lin Qingxue was stunned.

‘Master? Was she calling “master”?’

‘This little mute calling me master?’

She remembered the girl she saw at the neighborhood entrance tonight, clapping her hands and calling “Little Peach, come here.”

That little white dog wagged its tail and ran over, rubbing against her hand, licking her palm.

She looked at this little blind girl in front of her — white hair, purple eyes, covered in injuries, her hands covered in blood from her own bite, mouth open, tremblingly calling her “master.”

She’s not a dog.

She’s a person.

But she’s more obedient than a dog.

A dog can run, bark, bite.

She can’t.

She just cowers, waits, gets bullied by her, and she’s still clean.

Now she calls her “master.”

Lin Qingxue’s heart felt like it was struck by something.

Not pain, but that kind of — indescribable, soft, like stepping on cotton.

She reached out and gently touched Su Yutao’s head.

Su Yutao’s hair was white, soft, like a handful of snow in her palm.

She followed the hair down, touching her ear, her cheek, her chin.

Su Yutao didn’t dodge, didn’t shrink, didn’t tremble.

She just lay there, eyes half-open, purple pupils unfocused like two glass beads covered in fog.

Lin Qingxue’s fingers stopped at her chin, gently lifting it, turning her face straight.

Then she lowered her head and gently rubbed against Su Yutao’s forehead.

Not a kiss, but a rub, like a dog rubbing its head against its owner’s hand.

Lin Qingxue didn’t know why she did it, she just felt — this little thing called her master, she had to respond.

Like that girl clapping and calling “Little Peach, come here,” like that little white dog wagging its tail and running over.

She bent down, picked Su Yutao up under her arms, and held her in her arms.

Su Yutao’s head rested in her shoulder hollow, her body soft like a ball of cotton.

Lin Qingxue held her, lay down on the bed, pulled the blanket over both of them.

One arm around Su Yutao’s waist, the other gently patting her back, like soothing a frightened little animal.

Su Yutao’s hair brushed her chin, tickling.

Su Yutao’s breath hit her collarbone, cool, she didn’t flinch.

She just held her, patted her, gently, one pat, one pat, very slow.

Su Yutao was completely unaware of all this.

She had lost her senses, couldn’t feel being held, couldn’t feel the hand patting her back, couldn’t feel the blanket over her. She could only hear sounds — Lin Qingxue’s breathing, coming from above, slow and even.

And Lin Qingxue’s heartbeat, thump, thump, thump, from her chest, steady. She heard Lin Qingxue say a word, very softly, as if to herself, or to her: “Good.”

Su Yutao felt bewildered.

‘Good? What good? Who is she talking to?’

Qiansui whispered in her ear: “She seems to be… soothing you.”

Su Yutao was even more bewildered.

‘Soothing me? She bites me, then soothes me? Is she crazy?’

‘And it’s useless anyway, I can’t speak at all. I barely forced out one word, now my throat is numb again.’

‘But on the bright side, I can force out a few words at least. If only I could see…’

She wanted to ask Qiansui again if she could borrow a prop from Qianxia to let her see.

But Qiansui didn’t reply for some reason.

She could only hear the breathing, the heartbeat, and the sound of the hand patting her back — though she couldn’t feel it, she knew the hand was patting.

After a long time.

She didn’t know if it was ten minutes or half an hour.

Su Yutao’s senses slowly returned.

First she felt her hand — pain, that burning pain from being bitten.

Then she felt her arm — held, pressed against someone’s body.

Then she felt her back — rhythmic, gentle pats, one after another.

Finally she felt her whole body held in something — warm, soft, with the smell of laundry detergent and a hint of blood.

It was Lin Qingxue.

She was asleep.

Her breathing was slow and even, the patting hand had stopped at some point, resting on her back.

Su Yutao curled up in her arms, not daring to move.

She didn’t know why this person suddenly stopped biting her, why she held her, why she patted her back, why she said “good.”

She didn’t know.

She only knew that she was now in this person’s arms, held, embraced, like a dog held by its owner.

She felt disgusted with herself, but she didn’t dare move.

She was afraid that if she moved, this person would wake up and hit her again.

Meanwhile, on the other side.

Moonlight squeezed through the gap in the not-fully-drawn curtains, falling on a messy bed.

The pink blanket was bunched up, half dragging on the floor, the pillow crooked with a rolled-up pair of jeans on top.

Clothes, socks, hair ties, half-eaten bags of chips were scattered on the bed and floor, like a typhoon had swept through.

A pink-haired girl lay sprawled on the bed, her hair spread out like a fan, mouth slightly open, soft snores one after another, like a sleeping cat.

She wore a white Hello Kitty T-shirt, the collar slipped to her shoulder, revealing a delicate collarbone.

Her feet were outside the blanket, toes painted with light pink nail polish, and a band-aid wrapped around one big toe — not sure if it was from training or a bump.

She slept soundly, her whole body sunk softly into the mattress, not even noticing the moonlight creeping across her face.

Her phone vibrated.

The screen lit up, buzzing and spinning on the nightstand.

She frowned, turned over, and pulled the blanket over her head.

The phone stopped.

A few seconds later, it rang again.

She reached a hand out from under the blanket, grabbed the phone, swiped, and hung up.

It was quiet for a few more seconds.

When it rang a third time, she sat up abruptly, her hair a mess, eyes still closed, but her mouth already moving:

“Who is it –! In the middle of the night –! Disturbing my beauty sleep –! I’m so tired –!”
