All she knew was that she was lying in a strange room, with a strange girl beside her.

The girl’s name was Lin Qingxue.

Clear as water, pure as snow.

Su Yutao turned her head, ‘looking’ to the side.

She couldn’t see anything.

But she could feel that person there.

Breathing softly, sleeping peacefully.

Su Yutao closed her eyes—though they had been closed all along.

Keep sleeping.

We’ll figure it out tomorrow.

***

She didn’t know how much time had passed.

Maybe it was midnight.

Maybe it was early morning.

Lin Qingxue opened her eyes.

No.

That wasn’t Lin Qingxue.

Those eyes opened in the darkness, calm and cold, without a trace of drowsiness, like a stagnant pool.

She sat up, moving lightly, making no sound.

Then she stopped.

There was another person in the bed.

Right beside her, curled into a small ball.

Her gaze fell on that person, and her brow twitched almost imperceptibly.

The next second, she reached out, grabbed the back of the person’s neck, and lifted them out of the covers like a kitten.

Su Yutao jolted awake.

She knew nothing, only felt her neck tighten as her whole body was yanked up, suspended in midair.

She tried to struggle, but that hand was like an iron vice, completely immovable.

Then a voice sounded in her ear.

Very soft, very faint, but as cold as rainwater.

“What are you doing here?”

Su Yutao’s body went rigid.

This voice—

She had heard it before.

Last night, in the rain, that killer…

It was the murderer?!

The one who killed someone!?

Su Yutao opened her mouth but couldn’t make a sound.

She shook her head frantically, waving her hands in the air, trying to explain, but nothing came out.

That hand didn’t let go; instead, it tightened a little.

She could feel those eyes staring at her, like a predator eyeing its prey.

Silence for a few seconds.

That voice rang out again, but this time it wasn’t addressed to her—it seemed like a mutter to itself:

“That idiot Lin Qingxue… picks up anything and brings it home.”

The tone carried a hint of disdain, a touch of impatience.

That hand lifted her closer, bringing her right up to its eyes.

Su Yutao could feel that gaze, very close, right in front of her face.

“I let you off last night, but you just had to crawl into my bed.”

Su Yutao shook her head desperately.

She didn’t know.

She knew nothing.

She thought this was Lin Qingxue’s home, thought the person beside her was Lin Qingxue—

Suddenly, that hand let go.

Su Yutao fell back onto the bed, thudding into the covers, completely dazed.

She curled up, not daring to move.

That voice came from above, indifferent:

“What are you shrinking for? If I wanted to kill you, would I have waited until now?”

Footsteps.

Not coming toward her.

Heading toward the door.

Then the sound of the door opening.

Su Yutao perked up her ears, straining to listen.

Those footsteps went out, stopped somewhere outside.

Then a very soft voice, like making a phone call:

“The mission is complete.”

Silence.

“Mm, that woman is taken care of.”

Silence.

“No complications.”

Silence.

“Alright, hanging up.”

The sound of the call ending.

Then silence.

Su Yutao curled up on the bed, trembling all over.

She took care of her.

That woman.

The one lying in a pool of blood last night.

This person really killed her.

And now this person was right outside.

Could come in at any moment and take care of her too.

Su Yutao thought of Lin Qingxue.

Wait, in the middle of the night, she had touched the person beside her.

Lin Qingxue had seemed to be lying right next to her.

Could it be that the killer had come to silence her? If so, why didn’t Lin Qingxue wake up when he came in?

Unless—

Unless she already—

Su Yutao dared not think further.

Trembling, she reached out a hand, feeling beside her.

Empty.

The blanket was flipped back.

No one.

Cold.

No warmth.

Su Yutao’s hand froze.

Lin Qingxue wasn’t there. Not in bed.

Then where was she?

When that killer had gone out to make the call, where was Lin Qingxue?

Had she woken up?

Had she seen the killer?

Had she—

A thought flashed through Su Yutao’s mind, and all the blood in her body ran cold.

What about Lin Qingxue?

Where had Lin Qingxue gone?

Had she already been—

The door opened.

Footsteps returned.

Su Yutao tensed up, ears straining.

The footsteps stopped by the bed.

Silence.

Su Yutao could feel that gaze fall on her.

Then that voice rang out again, indifferent:

“Was it the daytime me who picked you up?”

Su Yutao was stunned for a second, but though she didn’t understand, she nodded frantically.

Silence.

“What did she tell you?”

Su Yutao shook her head.

Nothing.

Mainly because she couldn’t speak.

That voice seemed to believe her, or maybe not.

Silence for a few seconds.

Then a hand reached out, grabbed her chin, and lifted her face.

That voice was right in her ear, very close, very soft, like a blade cutting across ice:

“I don’t care who you are, where you came from, or what you want.”

“But remember one thing.”

“If you so much as breathe a word about tonight to her—”

That hand tightened a little, squeezing her chin painfully.

“I’ll cut out your tongue.”

“Not like you need it anyway.”

Su Yutao’s body went rigid, and she shook her head frantically.

She wouldn’t tell.

She wouldn’t say anything.

That hand let go.

Then the person straightened up.

Footsteps headed toward the door for two steps, then stopped.

That voice floated back, still indifferent:

“She’s softhearted, and her hands are soft too. She picks up everything and brings it home.”

“I’m not like her.”

“You’d better watch yourself.”

The footsteps faded.

The door opened and closed.

The room fell completely silent.

Su Yutao curled up on the bed, gasping for air, trembling all over.

She had no idea what that killer had been muttering about.

She didn’t know where that person had gone.

Didn’t know if they would come back.

Didn’t know what had happened to Lin Qingxue.

She only knew one thing—

The murderer from last night and the Lin Qingxue who picked her up this morning seemed to be, possibly, probably, the same person…

She was lying in a killer’s bed.

Sleeping beside a killer.

Picked up, threatened, warned by the killer.

And then the killer left.

Leaving her alone here.

Su Yutao curled up, wrapping the blanket tightly around herself.

In the darkness, only her own breathing could be heard.

She didn’t sleep all night.

She didn’t know how much time passed.

Maybe half an hour.

Maybe an hour.

The door opened.

Very softly.

Su Yutao’s whole body stiffened—she hadn’t been asleep at all.

Those footsteps entered.

Very light, but different from when they left.

Carrying a hint of dampness.

The bathroom door opened.

Then the sound of a faucet turning on, water rushing.

A shower.

That person was showering.

Su Yutao curled up on the bed, not daring to move.

She caught a faint scent.

Very subtle.

But her nose was keener than her eyes—in the darkness for so long, other senses sharpened.

The smell of blood.

That person had blood on them.

She seemed to have killed someone?

Killed someone again?!

Now she was showering, washing off the blood, and then—

Then she might come back to deal with her.

As if nothing had happened.

Su Yutao clenched the blanket, her nails digging into her palms.

The sound of water stopped.

The bathroom door opened.

Footsteps emerged.

Very light.

Getting closer.

Stopped by the bed.

Su Yutao could feel that gaze on her.

For a long time.

Maybe a few seconds, maybe tens of seconds.

Then the bed shifted.
