“But! After I level up! I’ll be able to see more of the story! Give you more hints! I can—”
It paused.
“I can… uh… a lot of things, anyway!”
Su Yutao listened to its tone growing more uncertain with each word. She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
This was the system she had waited so long for.
A novice that could only talk and act as her eyes, with incomplete functions. It couldn’t even clearly explain what it could do.
Qiansui seemed to sense her thoughts and said, aggrieved:
“Don’t look down on me… I may be a novice, but I try hard… My creator made me, gave me a mission, said ‘This mission is simple, just do your best,’ and then ran off to enjoy a sweet life in another world…”
Su Yutao was stunned.
Your creator?
“Yeah,” Qiansui said. “My creator is named Qianxia. She’s a level-one system with beautiful green hair. She made me from the most perfect original template… then shoved a mission at me and said, ‘Go play by yourself,’ and left…”
Su Yutao: …
So you really were abandoned?
Qiansui grew even more aggrieved:
“Not abandoned! It’s… it’s letting me grow independently! She said it’s good for me… Then she went on her honeymoon with her partner…”
Su Yutao fell silent.
A picture formed in her mind—a beautiful green-haired woman, a top-tier system, created a little system, casually tossed it out, said “the mission is simple, just do your best,” then turned and happily went on her honeymoon with her lover.
Leaving this little system floating in the air, bewildered, not knowing what to do.
Qiansui kept chattering:
“I searched for a long time before I found you… I thought I finally had a host and could do missions properly… but your situation is so complicated…”
Su Yutao: …
Qiansui sighed.
“My creator’s ‘mission is simple’ must have been a lie…”
Listening to its soft, aggrieved voice, Su Yutao suddenly found it a bit funny.
She couldn’t really laugh, though.
But the fear—it didn’t feel as heavy anymore.
She couldn’t help asking inwardly: Your creator also has green hair?
“Yeah,” Qiansui said. “Her hair is so pretty—long, green, like spring leaves. I have green hair too, but right now I’m attached to this penguin, so you can’t see it…”
Su Yutao thought of that dirty, wet, lumpy cotton penguin.
Green hair?
Completely invisible.
Qiansui seemed to know what she was thinking and mumbled softly:
“When I change carriers, you’ll be able to see…”
Su Yutao hugged the penguin a little tighter.
She didn’t mind.
Even if it was a useless system abandoned by its creator.
Even if it could only talk and act as eyes.
At least it would keep her company.
At least now she wasn’t alone.
The car stopped.
Shen Nian turned off the engine, got out, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door.
“We’re here. Get out.”
Su Yutao fumbled her way down.
Her feet touched the ground—smooth and level, like the floor of a parking garage.
Shen Nian reached out to steady her.
“Take it slow.”
Su Yutao walked forward step by step, supported by Shen Nian.
They entered the elevator.
The elevator doors closed.
The sensation of ascending.
Qiansui whispered in her ear:
“This elevator is so fancy… way fancier than the ones I sensed earlier… My creator didn’t even install this function for me…”
Su Yutao ignored it.
The elevator doors opened.
Shen Nian helped her walk out.
The sound of a door opening.
The sound of lights turning on.
Then Shen Nian said:
“We’re here. My place.”
Su Yutao stood there, not knowing where to go.
Shen Nian guided her to the sofa and had her sit down.
“Wait here. I’ll get the first aid kit.”
Footsteps receded.
Su Yutao curled up on the sofa, hugging Qiansui.
Qiansui began a live broadcast:
“This living room is huge… The sofa is so soft… There’s a floor-to-ceiling window over there… You can see the whole city skyline outside… So beautiful…”
As Su Yutao listened, she imagined the scene in her mind.
She couldn’t see it, but hearing Qiansui’s description, she could almost “see” a little.
Qiansui continued:
“There are paintings on the wall—real ones, not prints… Over there is a shelf with lots of trophies and certificates…”
Su Yutao was taken aback.
Trophies? Certificates?
“Yeah, the ones I mentioned earlier—piano, painting, foreign languages, diving, flying… They all have certificates. And there are a bunch I don’t understand, like some charity and foundation stuff…”
It paused, a note of envy in its voice:
“If only my creator were this amazing… But she just abandoned me…”
Su Yutao: …
Your creator is a system, not a human.
Qiansui thought about it:
“True…”
The sound of footsteps returned.
Shen Nian knelt in front of her and placed the first aid kit on the coffee table.
“Give me your arm.”
Su Yutao extended her arm.
Shen Nian gently unwrapped the old bandage.
The wound was revealed.
Shen Nian drew a sharp breath.
“That dog bite was vicious…”
Qiansui whispered in Su Yutao’s ear:
“Her expression is really serious… It must be bad…”
Su Yutao ignored it.
Shen Nian began treating the wound.
Disinfecting.
Pain. A piercing pain.
Su Yutao clenched her teeth and said nothing.
But her body trembled uncontrollably.
Qiansui panicked:
“Ouch ouch ouch! Go easy! If it keeps up, I’ll bite her—wait, I can’t bite…”
Su Yutao was caught between tears and laughter at its words.
Shen Nian’s movements paused for a moment.
Then she went even gentler.
“Bear with it. Almost done.”
Su Yutao nodded.
After disinfecting, she applied the medicine.
Cool.
Then a new bandage was wound around her arm.
One loop, two loops, three loops.
Shen Nian tied it off.
“All done.”
Su Yutao breathed a sigh of relief.
Qiansui sighed in relief too:
“Phew… Finally done… You scared me…”
Shen Nian stood up and closed the first aid kit.
Then she looked down at Su Yutao:
“Under that blanket of yours… are you not wearing anything?”
Su Yutao blushed.
Qiansui laughed in her ear:
“She’s so direct…”
Shen Nian sighed.
“Wait here. I’ll get you some clothes.”
Her footsteps retreated again.
Qiansui started gabbing:
“She’s really a good person… Tough on the outside, but attentive… If you stick with her, you probably won’t get bullied…”
Su Yutao didn’t answer.
Stick with her?
Could she always stay?
Would that person let her stay?
The footsteps returned.
A soft bundle was placed beside her.
“Clothes. Put them on for now. I’ll buy you new ones tomorrow.”
Su Yutao felt around and picked up the bundle.
It was pajamas.
Soft, smooth fabric.
Shen Nian said:
“Can you put them on yourself?”
Su Yutao nodded.
Shen Nian turned around:
“Go ahead, I’m not looking.”
Su Yutao fumbled her way into the pajamas.
They were huge.
Even bigger than the blanket she had on.
The sleeves and pant legs were much too long.
Qiansui laughed in her ear:
“You look like a kid wearing adult clothes…”
Su Yutao ignored it.
She finished dressing.
Shen Nian turned back, looked at her, and chuckled softly:
“Like a kid wearing adult clothes.”
Qiansui crowed:
“See, she said it too!”
Su Yutao: …
Shen Nian said:
“Are you hungry?”
Su Yutao thought about it.
Hungry?
Maybe she was hungry.
But she was more tired.
She shook her head.
Shen Nian didn’t push:
“Then sleep. I’ll take you to the hospital first thing tomorrow.”
She helped Su Yutao up and led her to a bedroom.
