Lin Qingxue shook her head.

“I don’t remember… I really don’t remember her being bitten by a dog…”

Shen Nian took a deep breath.

“That night, I video-called you, and you saw it with your own eyes. There were several teeth marks on her arm, and bloody holes. Zhou Ye, that idiot, didn’t watch her properly, and she ran downstairs to get bitten by a stray dog.”

As Lin Qingxue listened, fragmented images suddenly flashed through her mind—

a phone screen.

a small, curled-up figure.

blood.

But it was only for an instant.

The next second, those images vanished as if forcibly erased, leaving nothing behind.

In their place came a violent headache.

Her temples felt like they were being pricked by needles.

Lin Qingxue frowned and raised a hand to press against her forehead.

Seeing this, Shen Nian was taken aback.

“What’s wrong?”

Lin Qingxue closed her eyes, her voice weak.

“Headache… suddenly it hurts so much…”

Shen Nian quickly supported her.

“Are you okay? Want to go to the infirmary?”

Lin Qingxue shook her head and slowly opened her eyes.

There was a momentary blankness in her gaze.

Then she looked at Shen Nian, her expression returning to normal.

“It’s nothing. Probably just haven’t slept well these past few days.”

Shen Nian stared at her for a few seconds.

“Just now… did you remember something?”

Lin Qingxue froze.

“Remember what?”

Shen Nian was silent for a moment.

Then she shook her head.

“Forget it, probably I’m overthinking.”

She patted Lin Qingxue’s shoulder.

“Go home and rest. Take care of that little mute’s wound. Dog bites need rabies shots—don’t delay.”

Lin Qingxue nodded.

“I know.”

The two walked toward the school gate together.

Along the way, Shen Nian didn’t speak a word.

Just before they reached the fork where they would part ways, she suddenly stopped.

“Xiaoxue.”

Lin Qingxue turned around.

Shen Nian looked at her, her expression serious.

“If there’s something going on, you can tell me.”

Lin Qingxue paused.

“What something?”

Shen Nian was silent for a moment.

Then she shook her head.

“Forget it, maybe I really am overthinking.”

She waved her hand and turned to leave.

Lin Qingxue stood in place, watching her retreating figure.

Her head still throbbed faintly.

What was that image that flashed just now?

She couldn’t recall it.

The more she tried, the more her head hurt.

Finally, she gave up.

Maybe it was just a dream.

She thought so.

Turning, she headed home.

***

By the time she arrived home, the sky was already dark.

Lin Qingxue opened the door and stepped inside.

The living room lights were off.

In the darkness, a small figure was curled up on the sofa.

Lin Qingxue walked over and crouched in front of her.

“I’m back.”

Su Yutao raised her head.

In the dim light, her little face was hard to read, but Lin Qingxue could feel her trembling.

Lin Qingxue reached out and gently patted her head.

“What’s wrong? Scared being alone?”

Su Yutao shook her head.

Then nodded.

Then shook her head again.

Lin Qingxue chuckled softly, then remembered something.

“Let me see your hand.”

She took Su Yutao’s arm and carefully loosened one corner of the bandage.

By the faint streetlight filtering through the window, she saw the wound—

tooth marks.

bloody holes.

scabbed traces.

Lin Qingxue’s hand froze.

A scene suddenly flashed in her mind—

a phone screen.

a small, curled-up figure.

blood.

It was very blurry, as if through a layer of mist.

Then—

pain.

Her temples felt like they were being pricked by needles.

Lin Qingxue frowned, let go of her hand, and pressed her forehead.

Su Yutao was stunned.

What was wrong with her?

Lin Qingxue closed her eyes, and it took a while for her to recover.

She opened her eyes and looked at Su Yutao, a dazed expression on her face.

“Just now… I think I remembered something… but I can’t recall it…”

Su Yutao’s heart tightened.

She remembered what that person had said—

“I’ll add a memory for her.”

So this was… a side effect of adding memories?

Lin Qingxue gave a bitter smile.

“I don’t know what’s going on these past few days—I keep getting headaches. Just now, it hurt once on the way home too.”

She rubbed her temples.

“Nian Nian even asked if I was sick… I’m probably just too tired.”

Su Yutao didn’t know what to say.

She could only look in that direction—though she couldn’t see.

Lin Qingxue sighed and re-wrapped the bandage.

“This wound… it’s a dog bite, right? Nian Nian told me.”

Su Yutao’s whole body stiffened.

Lin Qingxue continued.

“I don’t remember… not at all, but I believe what she said.”

She lifted her head and looked at Su Yutao.

“It must have hurt a lot, right?”

Su Yutao was stunned.

This person was feeling sorry for her?

But she didn’t know that the one who caused her pain was someone else.

Lin Qingxue gently patted her shoulder.

“Hungry? I’ll cook.”

She stood up and walked toward the kitchen.

After two steps, she turned back.

“Oh, and I’ve been having headaches these days. If you hear me get up in the middle of the night, don’t be scared—I’m probably just groggy from sleep.”

Su Yutao’s heart tightened again.

Getting up in the middle of the night?

It would be better if she were sleepwalking.

That wasn’t her.

It was another person.

But she couldn’t say that.

She could only nod.

Lin Qingxue went into the kitchen.

The sound of running water.

The clatter of pots and pans.

Su Yutao curled up on the sofa, hugging Qiansui.

Her mind was a mess.

She thought back to what Lin Qingxue had said earlier—

“Just now, it hurt once on the way home too.”

Had Shen Nian said something to her?

The “memory” that person added seemed to be malfunctioning.

***

After dinner.

Washing up.

Lin Qingxue helped Su Yutao to the bed—tonight, she let her sleep on it.

“Your hand is still not healed, so it’s more comfortable to sleep on the bed.”

Su Yutao was tucked into the covers.

Soft.

Warm.

Lin Qingxue lay down beside her.

Lights out.

In the darkness, that gentle voice spoke beside her.

“Good night, little mute.”

A pause.

Then she spoke again, her voice a little tired.

“This headache of mine… I wonder when it’ll get better.”

Su Yutao didn’t respond.

She just lay there, eyes open, staring into the eternal darkness.

Waiting.

Waiting for the breathing beside her to become steady.

Waiting for that person to fall asleep.

Lin Qingxue closed her eyes.

Her head still ached faintly.

Those fragmented images—

a phone screen.

blood.

dog barking.

And… a blurry figure.

Standing in the darkness.

Looking at herself.

Who was it?

She couldn’t remember.

The more she tried, the more her head hurt.

Finally, her consciousness slowly blurred.

She fell asleep.

***

Lin Qingxue was asleep.

Su Yutao curled up on the bed, holding Qiansui, not moving.

She lay with her eyes open, staring into the eternal darkness.

Waiting.

Waiting for that person to come out.

She didn’t know how long passed.

Maybe half an hour, maybe an hour.

The breathing beside her remained soft and even.

Then—

it changed.

Not the kind of change from waking up.

It was as if someone else had taken over.

Su Yutao’s entire body tensed.

Qiansui whispered.

“She’s awake.”

The person beside her sat up.

The movement was very light, making no sound at all.

Then came silence.

A long silence.

Su Yutao dared not move.

Qiansui continued describing in her ear.

“She’s sitting there without moving… looking at something… seems to be in a daze…”

After a long time.

Maybe five minutes, maybe ten.

Then a voice sounded, very soft.

“Shen Nian…”
