The smoking man’s face went pale in an instant.

His mouth hung open, and a rasping sound came from his throat, like someone had him by the neck.

He stopped struggling, his whole body going limp as two special forces soldiers hoisted him out.

As they passed the door, one of his shoes fell off. A lone black leather shoe sat on the floor, laces undone.

The office fell silent.

The leading man swept his gaze across the room, walked over to the desk, picked up the still-smoldering cigarette butt, and ground it into the ashtray.

Then he turned and headed for the door.

Passing the colleague who had been sitting nearby organizing files, he paused and looked down at him.

The colleague was already pale with fear, papers scattered everywhere, lips trembling, unable to speak.

The leading man gave him a glance, said nothing, and kept walking.

The rhythmic footsteps faded away. The crackle of a walkie-talkie came from the hallway, followed by the dull thud of a car door closing.

The colleague slumped in his chair. It took him a long time to recover.

He bent down and picked up the scattered papers one by one, his hands still shaking.

He glanced out the window. Several black SUVs with flashing lights were slowly pulling out of the compound.

The smoking man was shoved into the middle car. The door slammed shut.

The convoy disappeared into the night.

The next morning.

Lin Qingxue opened her eyes. Her head felt heavy, like it was filled with lead.

She stared at the ceiling for a few seconds, her mind blank. Then she slowly sat up, shook her head, and thought: [I went to bed early enough last night. Why do I feel so groggy and tired?]

Then she felt something holding her waist.

She looked down. It was Su Yutao.

The little blind girl was lying on her side, curled up into a small ball, both arms wrapped tightly around Lin Qingxue’s waist.

Like she was hugging her little penguin. Her cheek pressed against Lin Qingxue’s side, white hair spread over her stomach, her breathing soft and even.

And the little penguin she usually held so tightly was squeezed between them, flattened, its fur all ruffled.

Only half a head and one round plastic eye were visible, staring innocently at the ceiling.

Lin Qingxue looked at her, smiled, reached out, and gently stroked Su Yutao’s head.

The white hair slipped through her fingers, soft and cool.

She thought: [Dr. Shen was right. If I spend a long time with her and treat her well, this little one will let down her guard.]

[She actually hugged me while sleeping. Before, she either slept on the floor or far away from me, curled up in the corner of the bed, trembling.]

[Now she’s holding me, so tightly.]

She didn’t want to wake Su Yutao, but she had to get up, make breakfast, and go to school.

Gently, she pried at Su Yutao’s hands. The little blind girl held on tightly, like a drowning person clinging to a log.

Lin Qingxue pried her fingers apart one by one, gently, slowly, afraid of waking her.

She pried one finger loose, but Su Yutao’s finger curled back. She pried again, and it curled again.

Lin Qingxue felt a little helpless, but she kept at it. Finally, she got the last finger loose and slowly slipped out of Su Yutao’s embrace.

Su Yutao felt the thing she was holding disappear. Her body twitched, her brow furrowed, her lips pressed together, and her hands groped in the air.

Lin Qingxue quickly grabbed the flattened penguin from the bed and stuffed it into Su Yutao’s arms.

The moment Su Yutao’s hands touched the penguin, she calmed down. She hugged it tightly.

Her face buried in the fur, her brow relaxed, her lips un-pressed, her breathing soft and even again.

Lin Qingxue watched this adorable scene, smiled, reached for her phone on the nightstand, opened the camera, and took a picture of Su Yutao.

Sunlight streamed through the gap in the curtains, falling on Su Yutao’s face. White hair spread across the pillow, her little face flushed with sleep, hugging the penguin, curled into a ball.

Lin Qingxue looked at the photo, the curve of her mouth deepening slightly. Then she opened Shen Nian’s chat and sent it.

Shen Nian replied almost instantly, a message popping up with a string of exclamation marks:

“Wow! This little thing is so cute!!!!”

Then the next message followed:

“But how did she get so many new wounds? Was it that bastard Zhou Ye again?”

Lin Qingxue’s finger paused on the screen, then she typed:

“Yeah, it was.”

“Last time, he got drunk and came here making a scene.”

She paused, then added:

“I won’t let him come anymore.”

Shen Nian replied again:

“But why does the little mute have a wound on her ear? And why is there a bite mark on her sleeve?”

“And there’s bloodstains on it, like they haven’t dried long.”

Lin Qingxue froze.

She put down her phone, leaned close to Su Yutao, gently pulled her arm, and pushed up the sleeve.

Sunlight shone on Su Yutao’s forearm. Between the bandages and gauze, there was a clear row of bite marks, red and swollen, with a thin scab.

Just like the one on her ear.

Lin Qingxue stared at the bite mark. A sudden image flashed through her mind. In it, she ignored the little blind girl’s struggles, forcibly pulled her hand over, and bit down on the back of her hand.

The little blind girl trembled in pain, mouth open, unable to make a sound, tears unable to flow, her whole body shaking.

And she herself was smiling.

The image flashed by, like a lightning bolt illuminating some corner of her mind, then went dark.

Lin Qingxue shook her head. No. Why did that image appear?

She rubbed her temples. Her head was starting to hurt again. Not a sharp pain, but a dull, stifling feeling, like something was blocked inside.

She looked at the bite mark on Su Yutao’s wrist, then at the bite mark on her own hand. The one Su Yutao had bitten her had scabbed over and was nearly healed.

Two bite marks. One big, one small. Hers was clearly shallower.

Su Yutao’s bite mark had obviously been done with force.

And the most crucial thing was that the positions were similar, as if it were a retaliatory bite.

She thought back to last night. Zhou Ye was drunk, making a scene, hitting Su Yutao, biting her.

But in the image in her head, there was no Zhou Ye. Only herself.

She shook her head, pushing the thought away.

It wasn’t her. It was Zhou Ye.

Zhou Ye did it.

She stood up, walked to the window, and pulled open the curtains.

Sunlight poured in, warm on her face.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, suppressing those chaotic images.

Then she walked back to the bed, pulled Su Yutao’s sleeve down to cover the bite mark.

She picked up her phone and replied to Shen Nian:

“Zhou Ye did it. I’m going to make breakfast.”

Then she tossed the phone aside and headed to the kitchen.

The sound of running water, the clatter of pots and pans, the sizzle of frying eggs.

She stood in the kitchen, spatula in hand, but the image kept turning in her head. Herself biting the little blind girl’s hand, the little girl trembling in pain.

She shook her head. Not her. It was Zhou Ye.

She continued frying the eggs.

One egg burned. She dumped the burnt egg into the trash and cracked two more.

Sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, warming her body.

But she felt cold.
