That faint voice sounded again, as if talking to itself, or cursing someone:

“Damn it.”

“Lin Qingxue, you idiot. You really bring anything home.”

Footsteps sounded again.

Not going out.

Coming back.

Getting closer.

Stopping by the bed.

Before Su Yutao could react, a hand reached out, grabbed the back of her neck, and yanked her out of the covers entirely.

Not yanked.

Dragged.

Like dragging a ragged doll.

Su Yutao was yanked into midair, her mind still blank, when she felt the hand start shaking her violently.

Shake left.

Shake right.

Her hair flew loose, her clothes tangled, and she was like a toy someone vented on.

That voice sounded in her ear, thick with grogginess and anger at being woken up:

“Dragged out of bed halfway through sleep—”

Yank.

“Have to go stake out—”

Shake.

“And stake out for several damn days—”

Squeeze.

“Come back and still have to take care of you little blind girl—”

Pinch.

Su Yutao was pulled back and forth, her face twisted out of shape, red marks on her arms, hair a mess—she was tossed around like a piece of rag.

She wanted to struggle.

Couldn’t.

That hand was too strong.

All she could do was be yanked, shaken, pinched, whimpering “mmph, mmph,” like a bullied little animal.

After a long while, the person seemed to have vented enough.

Stopped.

But still held her.

The voice spoke by her ear, residual anger still there but already faded:

“Since Lin Qingxue picked you up, just be a good pet.”

“You hear me?”

Su Yutao nodded frantically.

“Don’t make trouble at home, don’t climb the balcony, don’t run around.”

Su Yutao kept nodding.

“Tomorrow I’ll have someone bring you food. Stay put.”

Su Yutao nodded like a bobblehead.

The person stared at her for two seconds.

Then let go.

Su Yutao fell back onto the bed, crashing into the blankets, hair a mess, clothes twisted, completely dazed.

The person stood up.

Walked to the door.

The door opened.

That faint voice drifted back:

“Don’t die.”

The door closed.

Footsteps faded.

The room fell silent.

Only Su Yutao remained.

She lay on the bed, hair messy, face still sore from being pinched, red marks all over her arms and shoulders.

She curled into a ball.

Staring at the eternal darkness.

That person left.

Went to kill someone.

Wouldn’t be back for several days.

She was alone here.

Someone would bring food tomorrow.

Su Yutao didn’t know if she would die.

She only knew she was still alive now.

She closed her eyes—though they were already shut.

Wait for dawn.

***

The next day, that person really left.

The sound of the door closing still echoed in her ears, and the room was left with only silence.

Su Yutao lay on the bed, hair tangled, clothes askew, red marks from squeezing all over her face, arms, and shoulders.

She maintained the position she was dropped in, not daring to move.

Afraid that person might suddenly return.

She waited a long time.

Maybe minutes, maybe half an hour.

No one came back.

The room remained quiet.

So quiet she could hear her own heartbeat.

Su Yutao slowly sat up.

Darkness.

Eternal darkness.

She didn’t know what time it was, how far that person had gone, what to do next.

She reached out, feeling beside her.

Empty.

That person was really gone.

Su Yutao curled up on the bed, hugging her knees, making herself as small as possible.

Hungry.

She was hungry.

She hadn’t eaten anything since Shen Nian fed her at noon yesterday.

Thirsty.

She was thirsty too.

But she didn’t dare move.

What if ‘gone’ just meant out for a while?

What if she got off the bed and that person came back?

What if she got yanked and squeezed again?

Su Yutao curled up and waited.

Waited for a long, long time.

So long she thought maybe hours had passed.

No one came back.

She finally moved.

Slowly shuffled to the edge of the bed, legs dangling to find the floor.

Stood up.

Holding the wall, feeling her way forward inch by inch.

She remembered the direction of the bedroom door.

Found it.

The door was open.

She groped her way out.

Living room.

She remembered where the sofa was, where the coffee table was.

Slowly felt her way over.

Found the sofa.

Then reached forward—coffee table.

What was on it?

She touched—a bowl? A cup?

Empty.

Nothing.

Where was the kitchen?

She remembered the direction Shen Nian brought food from yesterday.

Holding the wall, she continued feeling.

Found another door frame.

Kitchen.

She feeling her way in.

What was on the counter?

Touched—a sink.

Faucet.

She turned it on, cupped water with her hands, and lowered her head to drink.

Cold, and she didn’t know if it was clean.

But it quenched her thirst.

What about food?

She fumbled to open the refrigerator—cold air hit her, and there was a faint light (she sensed a slight brightness), but she didn’t know what was inside.

She touched what felt like leftovers? A bowl.

She didn’t dare take it out to eat.

What if it was that person’s and they’d notice she touched it?

She closed the fridge door again.

Returned to the sofa, curled up again.

Waited.

She didn’t know how much longer passed.

Sleepy, very sleepy.

She curled up on the sofa and fell asleep.

When she woke up, it was still dark.

Eternal darkness.

But it seemed different—like a change in light?

She didn’t know.

She only knew she was still alone.

No one came back.

Hungry, even hungrier.

She went to the kitchen again and drank a few mouthfuls of water.

Her stomach growled.

Loudly.

She pressed her hand to her stomach. It didn’t help.

She curled back onto the sofa, continued waiting.

That person said someone would come bring food.

When?

She didn’t know.

She could only wait.

Waited for a long, long time.

So long she thought maybe another day had passed.

No one came.

Hunger made her stomach cramp.

Hunger made her see stars—though it was already dark.

She remembered that first night after transmigrating, eating rotten leaves in that corner.

At least there were rotten leaves to eat then.

Now there weren’t even rotten leaves.

She curled up on the sofa, trembling all over.

Not from cold.

From hunger.

From fear.

From not knowing what to do.

Day Two

Su Yutao didn’t know when she fell asleep.

Maybe she fainted from hunger.

Maybe from exhaustion.

She only knew when she woke up, her stomach ached like something was stirring inside.

Everything spun.

Looking at things—no, she couldn’t see anyway. But that dizzy feeling was her whole brain reeling.

She supported herself on the sofa and slowly sat up.

Light-headed and weak.

Her whole body felt floaty.

She tried to stand, but her legs gave out and she sat back down.

Too hungry.

From yesterday noon until now, she’d only had a few sips of water.

Though she couldn’t tell time well, she felt it had been days.

That person said someone would bring food.

Where were they?

Su Yutao curled on the sofa, hugging her knees, burying her face in them.

She chanted in her mind:

System.

System big brother.

System big sister.

When are you coming?

I’m starving to death.

Silence.

Nothing.

She knew it.

She was just unlucky.

Just as she thought she might faint again—

The door clicked.

The sound of a key turning.

Su Yutao jolted, lifting her head.

The door opened.

Footsteps entered.

A man’s voice sounded, tinged with sleaze:

“Oh? Really no one home?”

He seemed to circle the room.

“Where’s the dog? Told me to feed the dog. Where is it?”
