The voice was right by her ear, soft and faint, like a blade gliding across ice:

“How much did you hear?”

Su Yutao shook her head frantically.

“I’m asking you a question.”

Su Yutao kept shaking her head.

She dared not say she had heard.

That person stared at her for two seconds.

Then the hand pinching her chin suddenly tightened—pain.

It felt like her bones were about to be crushed.

Su Yutao opened her mouth, a rasping “huh huh” escaping her throat, but no scream came out.

That voice remained just as faint:

“Last chance. How much did you hear?”

Su Yutao trembled all over.

She pointed at her ears, then toward the direction of the phone—she had heard everything.

That person loosened her grip slightly.

“Heard everything?”

Su Yutao nodded.

“Then do you know what usually happens to people who hear things like this?”

Su Yutao froze.

She didn’t know.

But she could guess.

That person watched her reaction and let out a soft laugh.

Not a real laugh.

“Scared?”

Su Yutao nodded.

Then shook her head.

Then nodded again.

She didn’t know what to do.

That person released her chin.

But didn’t let her go.

Instead, she turned Su Yutao around to face her.

The voice was very close, right in front of her:

“Your name is Su Yutao.”

Su Yutao nodded.

“Seventeen years old. Sole survivor of the orphanage fire. Blind and mute. You survive by scavenging trash.”

Su Yutao kept nodding.

“That local thug is called Huang San. He runs the streets. Not a big shot, but not small either. Killing someone like you is as easy as crushing an ant.”

Su Yutao trembled uncontrollably.

That person watched her shake, her tone still flat:

“But you’re unlucky.”

“Instead of falling into his hands, you fell into mine.”

Su Yutao didn’t understand what that meant.

Was it good or bad?

That person seemed to read her confusion and added lightly:

“He needs a reason to kill you. I don’t.”

Su Yutao’s face turned white in an instant—though it was already pale.

Seeing her like that, that person seemed satisfied.

She let go.

Put Su Yutao back on the bed.

But not under the covers—she sat her on top of the blanket.

Then that person picked up the phone and said into it:

“Continue.”

On the other end, Mole’s voice hesitated, as if he had been listening the whole time:

“Uh… Miss Lin, were you just now…”

That person didn’t answer, just repeated:

“Continue.”

Mole paused, then went on:

“That’s all I’ve got. She’s just a nobody little beggar, how much info could there be?”

“I’ll send these files to your phone. But I should warn you—this girl might not have connections, but there are people keeping an eye on the online buzz. If you…”

That person cut him off:

“I don’t need you to teach me how to do my job.”

Mole shut up.

The call ended.

The room fell silent.

Su Yutao sat on the bed, curled up, trembling.

That person sat beside her, looking at her phone.

The screen light illuminated her face—Su Yutao couldn’t see it, but she could sense the glow.

A long silence.

Then the voice sounded again, faintly:

“Do you know why I looked into you?”

Su Yutao shook her head.

That person paused.

Then let out a soft laugh.

“I don’t know either.”

She put down her phone.

Turned to look at Su Yutao.

In the darkness, her eyes were like two cold stars.

“Logically speaking, a little thing like you could die and no one would care. I had no reason to go through this trouble.”

“But you appeared on that rainy night, holding that dead body. I let you go. That idiot picked you up. And now you’re lying in my bed.”

“Too many coincidences piled up. Don’t you think I should check you out?”

She paused.

“Don’t you find it interesting?”

Su Yutao didn’t know how to answer.

She just curled up, shaking.

That person watched her for a while.

Then reached out—

Su Yutao’s whole body tensed.

But that hand didn’t strangle her.

It just pinched her cheek.

Like squeezing a toy.

“Skinny as a chicken.”

That person withdrew her hand.

Lay down.

Closed her eyes.

The faint voice drifted over:

“Sleep. I’ll question you again tomorrow.”

Su Yutao froze.

Question again tomorrow?

Ask what?

But that person said no more.

The room fell quiet again.

That soft, even breathing sounded beside her—light and steady.

Su Yutao curled up on the bed, motionless.

Her wrist still hurt.

Her chin still hurt.

The back of her neck still hurt.

But she dared not move.

She was afraid that if she moved, that person would wake up again.

She waited a long time.

Maybe ten minutes, maybe half an hour.

The person beside her was truly asleep.

Her breathing remained so light, so steady.

Su Yutao’s tense body slowly relaxed a little.

But she still didn’t dare to move.

She kept her eyes open, staring into the eternal darkness.

Her mind was full of those words—

That person said: You fell into my hands.

That person said: I’ll question you again tomorrow.

Tomorrow.

There would be another tomorrow.

Tomorrow night, she would wake up again.

And the questioning would continue.

And then—

Su Yutao didn’t know what would come next.

She only knew she was even more afraid now.

Suddenly, the person beside her moved.

Su Yutao tensed up again.

But it was just a turn in sleep.

Then silence.

Just as Su Yutao started to relax—

A phone vibrated.

Very softly.

But in the quiet night, that tiny vibration was sharp and clear.

Su Yutao stiffened.

The person beside her stirred.

A hand reached over and picked up the phone.

The screen lit up—Su Yutao could feel the slight change in light against her eyelids.

Then came a very faint voice, with a trace of barely concealed impatience:

“What is it.”

A pause.

“Mole.”

On the other end, that slick male voice spoke.

This time Su Yutao heard clearly—

“Uh… well… there’s a new assignment.”

Silence.

That person didn’t speak.

But Su Yutao could feel the air around them drop a few degrees.

The voice continued:

“And… it’s a bit tricky. You need to leave now.”

Silence.

Still silence.

Su Yutao curled up on the bed, not daring to move.

Then the faint voice sounded again, even flatter than before:

“How long?”

Mole said: “Probably a few days. This target is hard to tail. Need to stake it out.”

Silence.

That person didn’t reply.

But Su Yutao could sense her looking at the phone—reading messages, checking files.

Then that person moved.

Sat up.

Her movements were light, like a cat prowling at night.

She picked up Lin Qingxue’s phone—the one used during the day.

The screen lit up.

She was typing.

Requesting leave.

A pre-prepared excuse.

Sent.

Then she put the phone back.

Stood up.

Walked to the door.

Su Yutao curled up on the bed, listening to the sounds.

She was leaving.

She was going out to kill.

How many days would she be gone?

What about her?

Would she be left here alone?

The sound of the door handle pressing down.

The door opened a crack.

Then—

It stopped.

Su Yutao pricked up her ears.

Those footsteps hadn’t left.

They stopped right at the door.

Silence.

Su Yutao could feel that gaze, piercing through the darkness, landing on her.

The small, curled-up thing on the bed.

Then a barely audible sigh.
