Su Yutao’s heart tightened.

Qiansui whispered, “She mentioned Shen Nian.”

Silence again.

Then that person chuckled softly.

The laugh was faint, but Su Yutao felt a chill run down her spine.

Qiansui’s voice also trembled: “That laugh is so cold…”

That person stood up.

Walked to the window.

Qiansui said, “She’s gone to the window… standing there looking outside…”

A long silence.

Then that voice drifted back: “Every time I succeed in the alteration, every time I go undetected…”

A pause.

“And this time I actually missed an outsider.”

Qiansui asked softly, “What outsider? Shen Nian?”

Su Yutao didn’t know.

She just curled up, not daring to move.

Footsteps sounded.

Getting closer.

Stopped beside the bed.

Qiansui’s voice grew even softer: “She’s here… right by the bed…”

Then a hand reached out and directly grasped Su Yutao’s broken hand.

Su Yutao’s whole body stiffened.

That voice was right in her ear: “Since you’ve already found a flaw, knowing there’s something wrong with your hand—”

The hand began to squeeze.

Pain.

An excruciating pain.

Su Yutao opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Her entire body convulsed as if electrocuted.

Qiansui said urgently in her ear: “She’s squeezing… your hand…”

Pain.

Too much pain.

The pain darkened her vision.

The pain made her forget everything else.

She opened her mouth—

And bit down.

Bit into the hand that gripped hers.

She bit hard.

Her teeth sank into the flesh.

Then she tasted it.

Warm.

Metallic and sweet.

It was blood.

That person, feeling the pain, loosened their grip.

Su Yutao rolled backward, tumbling off the bed.

“Thud.”

She hit the floor.

Ignoring the pain, she hugged Qiansui and scrambled backward.

Before she could get far—

A kick came.

Right in the stomach.

“Bam!”

Su Yutao was sent flying, her back slamming into the wall.

Pain.

The kind of pain that shifts all your internal organs.

She curled on the ground, mouth open, no sound coming out.

Only a hoarse wheeze from her throat.

Qiansui rolled out of her arms and landed on the floor.

Then—

Another kick.

Hit the fluffy penguin.

Qiansui rolled into a corner.

Far away.

Su Yutao could no longer hear Qiansui’s voice.

She froze.

She reached out, groping on the floor.

Empty.

She groped again.

Still empty.

Couldn’t find anything.

Nowhere.

Su Yutao panicked.

She crawled desperately, her hands frantically searching the floor.

Nothing.

No Qiansui.

The smell of blood drew nearer.

Footsteps.

Step by step.

Then that person crouched in front of Su Yutao.

A hand reached out, grabbed her chin, and lifted her face.

The smell of blood was stronger now.

Right in front of her.

The blood on the back of the hand smeared across her face.

Warm.

Coppery.

That voice whispered in her ear: “My own dog, and it bites its owner?”

Su Yutao trembled all over.

She wanted to hear Qiansui’s voice.

But couldn’t.

Qiansui wasn’t by her ear.

Only that person’s voice.

Only darkness.

That person looked at her trembling form and chuckled softly.

The laugh was chillingly cold.

“So disobedient.”

The hand holding her chin tightened a bit.

“Dogs like this are usually beaten to death.”

A few seconds of silence.

Then that person released her hand.

Stood up.

Looked down at her.

“But Lin Qingxue brought you back.”

A pause.

“If I beat you to death, she’ll be sad when she wakes up.”

That person turned and walked out.

At the door, they stopped.

That voice drifted back: “Next time you bite, I won’t care if she’s sad.”

The door closed.

The footsteps faded.

The smell of blood lingered in the air.

Su Yutao curled on the floor, trembling.

Her stomach hurt.

Her hand hurt.

Her mouth still had that taste.

But she didn’t care about any of that.

She reached out and groped the floor.

Empty.

She crawled forward a bit, groped again.

Still empty.

She crawled.

Empty, empty, empty, why was it still empty?

Qiansui.

Where was Qiansui?

She couldn’t hear Qiansui’s voice.

No Qiansui to tell her where that person was.

No Qiansui to describe what was happening.

Only darkness.

Eternal darkness.

She was alone.

Su Yutao curled up in a corner, hugging herself.

Pain.

Fear.

But she dared not make a sound.

Afraid that person would come back.

She could only curl up.

Wait.

Wait for dawn?

But how long until dawn?

She didn’t know.

She only knew it was still dark.

It was always dark.

Time passed bit by bit.

Maybe a few minutes.

Maybe half an hour.

Maybe an hour.

Su Yutao didn’t know.

She only knew pain.

Her shoulders hurt.

Her stomach hurt.

Her hand hurt.

And another place hurt.

Her heart.

That pain was indescribable.

Like something stirring inside.

She remembered Qiansui.

That soft, adorable voice.

The voice that called her ‘host.’

The voice that told her ‘don’t be afraid.’

The voice that said ‘I’m here.’

She couldn’t hear it anymore.

Didn’t know where it was.

Didn’t know if it was still alive.

Su Yutao buried her head in her knees.

She wanted to cry.

But she couldn’t.

This body couldn’t cry.

Her eyes stung.

Her nose stung.

Her throat was choked.

But nothing came out.

Nothing could fall.

She opened her mouth.

Wanted to speak.

Wanted to call Qiansui’s name.

Wanted to shout ‘Where are you?’

But no sound came.

Only air passed through her throat.

“Hah… hah…”

Like a dying animal.

Su Yutao’s hands began to shake.

Her whole body trembled.

Voices started in her head.

Many voices.

“Why are you squatting here alone?” — Lin Qingxue’s daytime voice, gentle.

“Don’t be afraid, I’m here.” — The same daytime voice.

“Move again and I’ll throw you out the window.” — The nighttime voice, cold.

“My own dog, and it bites its owner?” — Still the nighttime voice.

“Dogs like this are usually beaten to death.” — That voice laughing.

“I’m here… I’m here…” — Qiansui’s voice, soft.

Only darkness.

Only pain.

Only herself.

Su Yutao’s breathing grew faster.

She remembered that rainy night.

When she first transmigrated.

Blind and mute, cold and hungry, alone in a corner.

Back then, she thought that was the worst.

Then she met Lin Qingxue.

The daytime one.

Who bought her medicine, bought her buns, let her sleep on the bed.

She thought that was hope.

But then the nighttime one came out.

Choked her, hit her, threatened her.

She thought that was the worst.

Then she met Shen Nian.

Who fed her, helped her sew Qiansui, let her sleep on a soft bed.

She thought that was heaven.

But then she was brought back.

Beaten again.

Threatened again.

Even Qiansui was gone.

Why?

Su Yutao’s nails dug into her flesh.

Why did she have to transmigrate?

Why did others get systems and cheat skills while she got nothing?

Why was Qiansui a useless system that couldn’t even protect itself?

Why did the nighttime person treat her like this?

Why was the daytime one so gentle and the nighttime one so cruel?

Why?

Why?

Why?!

No, seriously, why? Why? Why?!
