Which reading system would you prefer for Pie Novels?

Su Yutao was stunned.

She never asked before.

She would just touch, just reach out, just hug.

Now she asked.

Su Yutao hesitated, then slowly nodded.

A hand reached over and gently landed on her head.

Very light, very slow, like stroking a frightened little animal.

After two touches, it withdrew.

Lin Qingxue stood up. “I’m going to shower. You sleep first.”

Footsteps moved toward the door.

Stopped at the door. “If you don’t want to sleep, just lie in bed. Don’t run around.”

Su Yutao nodded.

The door closed.

Footsteps faded.

The bathroom door opened and closed.

The sound of water rushing started.

The room fell silent.

Su Yutao sat on the bed, holding Qiansui.

Qiansui whispered in her ear, “She’s gone to shower. How long does she take to shower?”

Su Yutao didn’t know.

All she knew was that the daytime her showered very slowly.

Last time at her house, she stayed in the bathroom for a long time, the water running continuously, and when she came out, her hair was still wet.

Qiansui added, “While she’s showering, let’s use the prop. Two hours, enough for you to run an errand.”

Su Yutao was stunned.

Now?

Qiansui said, “Yes. She takes a long time to shower. Even if she comes out, if you make a fake, she’ll think you’re asleep. You just need to be back before she comes out.”

Su Yutao’s hands started trembling.

She remembered what that person had said—”Don’t run around.”

It was the daytime her who said it. Not the nighttime one.

When the daytime her said “Don’t run around,” it was out of concern, not a threat.

But she needed to go out.

She needed to progress the main quest.

She needed to go back.

She needed to go home.

Qiansui whispered in her ear, “Don’t you want to go?”

Su Yutao hugged Qiansui tighter.

She did want to go.

She wanted to go to that alley to trigger the storyline, to progress the main quest, to go back.

But she was afraid.

Afraid of being caught by the daytime her, afraid of the nighttime her finding out, afraid of being beaten.

Qiansui whispered, “I’ll keep watch for you. The map is in your head, the sonar is in your hands. You run there, meet them, and run back.”

“No beating.”

“It’ll be fast.”

(Dog-headed strategist move—)

Su Yutao bit her lip.

Then she nodded.

She took a deep breath and thought “Activate” in her mind.

Then she felt it—not light, but something else.

Like a bat’s sonar, like ripples in water, spreading from her body, hitting objects, bouncing back, forming images in her mind.

She “saw” it.

Not really seeing, but hazy outlines as if through frosted glass.

But it was ten thousand times better than seeing nothing.

She saw the bed—rectangular, soft, she was sitting on it.

She saw the nightstand—small, with a circular outline on it, probably a lamp.

She saw the window—rectangular, to the left of the bed, with light outside, a streetlamp.

She saw the door—rectangular, opposite the bed, closed.

Outside was the hallway.

At the end of the hallway, the bathroom.

The sound of water was still running.

Su Yutao felt a surge of emotion.

She saw it.

She finally saw it.

Though blurry, though just outlines, she saw.

Qiansui was in her arms, round, plump, fluffy.

She looked down at Qiansui—that round outline, moving slightly in her arms.

Qiansui’s voice sounded in her ear, soft: “Can you see now?”

Su Yutao nodded.

Nodded desperately.

Qiansui was happy: “Good! Quick, let’s go!”

Su Yutao sat on the bed, the route spinning in her mind—left, right, straight ahead.

Qiansui was in her arms, round and warm.

In the bathroom, the water was rushing; the daytime her was showering.

Su Yutao took a deep breath, set Qiansui on the bed, and began to fumble.

She needed to make a decoy.

She couldn’t let the daytime her discover she had gone out.

She felt the quilt, arched it up, piled it into a human shape.

Then she stuffed the pillow inside, patted and pinched it, making the bulge look like someone curled up inside.

She also felt her clothes—a loose T-shirt, Lin Qingxue’s, sleeves too long, hem covering her thighs.

The pants were also Lin Qingxue’s, cuffed several times but still dragging on the floor.

If she walked down the street in these clothes, people would think she was some kid playing dress-up in adult clothes.

She also felt the slippers on her feet, soft-soled, soundless when walking.

Su Yutao scooped Qiansui back into her arms, stood by the bed, and “looked” at the lump on the bed.

It looked like a person curled under the covers.

It should, might, probably be enough to fool someone.

She turned and walked toward the door.

Her feet stepped on the floor, cool, the soles of the slippers soft, no sound.

She reached the bedroom door, looked back—the lump lay quietly on the bed, like a sleeping person.

She pulled the door open and walked out.

Hallway.

Left was the living room, right was the bathroom.

The water still ran.

She turned left, passing the living room: sofa, coffee table, TV cabinet.

She “saw” clothes hanging on the balcony, swaying gently in the wind.

She reached the front door, placed her hand on the handle.

Pressed down.

The door opened.

The hallway light was on, motion-activated, shining on her.

Su Yutao stood at the door, not going out immediately.

She “saw” outside—a long hallway, doors on both sides.

The stairs to the right.

Further out, the outside world.

She just needed to take this step, and she would be out.

Leave this house that had trapped her for days.

This place that was not “home”.

This place where that person was.

She stood at the door, feeling dazed.

Just like that, she was out?

Just like that, she was leaving?

She thought she would be trapped here forever, beaten by that person, choked by that person, trampled underfoot.

Now she stood at the door, the door open, freedom just outside.

A thought was madly sprouting in her mind.

She didn’t want to come back.

She really didn’t want to come back.

She wanted to go, far away, never return.

She didn’t need Qiansui’s navigation, didn’t need the main quest, didn’t need to go back.

She just needed to leave this place.

Leave this person.

Never come back.

Qiansui whispered in her ear, “I know you don’t want to come back, but if you don’t, the nighttime her will come after you. She will find you, beat you, take me away. You don’t want to go through that again, do you?”

Su Yutao’s hands started shaking.

She remembered that person’s hand choking her neck, the foot stepping on her head, the sound of her shoulder being crushed.

That person would find her.

No matter where she ran, that person would find her.

She couldn’t escape.

Su Yutao hugged Qiansui tighter and took that step.

The hallway light went out behind her.

She went downstairs, one floor, two floors, three floors.

The unit door, pushed open.

The night wind surged in, cool, blowing on her face, blowing through her hair.

Her white hair fluttered under the streetlight, like a small flag.

The streetlights in the compound were on, casting tree shadows on the ground.

She could “see” those shadows, blurry, like black stains.

Wearing Lin Qingxue’s oversized T-shirt, dragging long pant legs, in slippers, she stood on the compound path.

Her white hair shone under the streetlight, her purple eyes open, seeing nothing, but the sonar painted the outline of the world in her mind.
