Chapter 60: A Glimpse of Freedom

[ays_poll id="2"]

Qiansui whispered in her ear, “Go left, out the main gate. Then turn right, two blocks.”

Su Yutao took a step.

She could ‘see.’

Blurred, mere outlines, but she could see.

She no longer had to feel the walls, fear stepping into nothing, or worry about bumping into things.

She saw the bench by the road, the trash can, the cars parked at the curb.

She saw the world.

Streetlights were circles of light. Trees were black silhouettes. Buildings were giant blocks, neatly arranged.

Clouds drifted in the sky, hazy, pushed by the wind, moving slowly.

The moon hung above the rooftops—round, bright, like a glowing plate.

Su Yutao stood by the road, tilting her head up to ‘look’ at the moon.

It was the first time she had ‘seen’ the moon since crossing over.

Blurred, just an outline, but it was round, bright, and in the sky.

The same moon as in her original world.

Qiansui whispered, “Is it beautiful?”

Su Yutao nodded.

Beautiful.

Truly beautiful.

She stood there, watching the moon for a long time.

Then she continued walking.

Out the main gate.

Turn right.

Walk down the first street.

Cars passed by on the road, their headlights turning into two streaks of white light in her sonar before fading away.

As she walked, her pant leg caught under her foot, making her stumble.

She lurched forward, nearly falling.

Steadying herself, she pulled the pant leg up and kept going.

Her slipper fell off again.

Standing on one foot, her bare sole cold against the ground, she used her toes to reach for the slipper.

Got it. Put it on. Continued walking.

Her white hair fluttered in the wind. Occasionally a passerby would glance at her—a little girl in adult-sized clothes, dragging slippers, white hair and purple eyes, clutching a penguin, walking in the night breeze, like someone who had escaped from a mental hospital.

Qiansui said, “The second street ahead, turn left. The alley is somewhere around there.”

Su Yutao turned left.

Second street.

She ‘saw’ old houses on both sides, low and covered in ivy, dark like splashes of ink.

The road was uneven, some parts high, some low.

She stepped into a hole, twisted her ankle. It hurt.

Clenching her teeth, she kept walking.

Her slipper fell off again. She crouched to pick it up, her hand touching the ground. Wet. Water or something else.

She wiped her hand on her pant leg, put on the slipper, and continued.

Qiansui said, “Almost there. The alley entrance is ahead.”

Su Yutao ‘saw’ it—a narrow, dark alley mouth between walls. She took a deep breath and walked toward it.

Then Qiansui fell silent.

After a few seconds, that soft voice spoke again, tinged with panic: “Um… left or right?”

Su Yutao froze.

Qiansui’s voice grew more flustered: “I glanced at the map just now, and then… then I forgot whether it was left or right?”

Su Yutao stood still, waiting.

Qiansui said hurriedly, “Wait, let me check again—no, how do I read this map? I tap here—ah, no, how do I zoom in—”

Su Yutao stood there, the night wind blowing her hair and her oversized T-shirt.

She could ‘see’ the surroundings—wall on her left, road on her right, alley entrance ahead, and the path she had come from behind.

But she didn’t know which way to go.

Qiansui fumbled for a long time in her ear, their voice growing smaller: “I-I can’t read this map… there are so many lines, I don’t know which one is…”

Su Yutao hugged Qiansui tighter.

She didn’t blame them.

She just stood there, not knowing where to go.

She ‘looked’ at this unfamiliar world—streetlights, trees, walls, alley entrance.

She didn’t know which path was right, but she knew that for now, she could see.

Only two hours, and Qiansui couldn’t read the map, but she could see.

The time now belonged to her. No one could control her. She was free.

She could walk herself, look herself, decide where to go.

She didn’t want to go to that alley anymore.

She didn’t want to find those underlings.

She didn’t want to trigger any plot.

She just wanted to walk.

Just wanted to see this world.

To see what the place she was trapped in really looked like.

Su Yutao took a step.

Not toward the alley. In another direction.

Qiansui was stunned. “You-you’re not going to the alley?”

Su Yutao shook her head.

No.

Qiansui panicked. “But the main quest—” Su Yutao hugged Qiansui even tighter.

Main quest can wait.

She just wanted to see this world.

Qiansui fell silent.

They just stayed quietly in her arms.

Su Yutao walked.

She ‘saw’ a row of small shops by the road, their rolling doors pulled down, covered in colorful graffiti.

She ‘saw’ a bus stop, its billboard lit, displaying a human silhouette advertising something unknown.

She ‘saw’ a large tree, its trunk thick, branches and leaves dense, casting a huge shadow under the streetlight.

She walked over and placed her hand on the trunk.

Rough. Prickly.

She tilted her head up to ‘look’ at the crown—a large dark shadow swaying gently in the wind.

She stood there, touching a tree, looking at its shadow.

For a long time.

Then she continued walking.

Her slippers slapped against the ground.

Her pant leg fell again. She crouched to roll it up, rolled it several times, but it still fell.

She simply hiked the pant leg up to her knee, revealing a thin calf.

The wind blew, chilly. She shivered.

But she didn’t go back.

She kept walking.

Qiansui whispered in her ear, “One more hour.”

Su Yutao nodded.

She knew.

She still had time.

She could still look at this world.

***

On the other side.

The bathroom door opened.

Lin Qingxue stepped out, her hair dried and loosely draped over her shoulders.

She walked into the bedroom and saw the lump in the bed—the blanket mounded up, a pillow stuffed inside, like someone sleeping curled up.

She smiled slightly and murmured, “This little one, sleeping at home all day, aren’t you bored? You sleep over ten hours a day, just like a kitten.”

She walked over and turned off the light.

The room darkened. She lay down beside Su Yutao and closed her eyes.

Moonlight seeped through the curtain gap, falling on the lump in the bed.

She didn’t know it was just a pile of blankets and pillows.

She didn’t know Su Yutao wasn’t there.

She didn’t know Su Yutao was wearing her clothes, dragging her slippers, white hair flowing in the night wind, walking on a road that led nowhere.

She fell asleep.

Suddenly Lin Qingxue opened her eyes.

She sat up, moving lightly, and looked down at the back of her hand.

There was a row of teeth marks, scabbed over with blood—bitten during the day.

Her gaze turned cold, and she let out a soft laugh. “Getting bold now, huh? Bai Xue treated you so well and you dared to bite me. Looks like this little one really won’t learn unless she’s taught a lesson.”

She reached out and yanked the blanket aside.
