Chapter 142: The Backer Patriarch Incident

In my panic, I aimed the illustrated guide at my feet.

【Backer Patriarch Antun X-12345 (Gold)】

【Level: ???】

【HP: ???】

【Attributes: ??? (Preliminary speculation: Fire/Ground based on skin color)】

【Unknown demonic construct. Approach with caution.】

“No way?! Did it just happen to move at this exact moment?”

Or was this part of the main storyline?

“Help! Your Holinesses of the Saint rank!” I yelled at the top of my lungs.

With two sharp cracking sounds, Alexia and Shirley appeared before us.

“Now you remember to call us Your Holinesses?” Shirley rolled her eyes at me, then raised her tickle stick… ah, no, her pastor’s staff. A dazzling holy light bloomed at its tip.

“Forbidden Spell—Heaven’s Punishment!”

Blazing holy light splashed onto the Backer Patriarch Antun, causing it to tremble violently from the pain, shaking us around.

“Is that the only move you have?” I complained. “You used the same spell against the players earlier. This forbidden spell is really all-purpose…”

“Who says it isn’t!” Shirley showed no sign of shame, only pride. She raised her tickle stick and fired off one, two, three, four more Heaven’s Punishments. “This forbidden spell is the most cost-effective against larger targets. It’s the most practical forbidden spell in the Holy Light system, and one of the only two offensive forbidden spells in that branch… Want to learn it? Hehe, I won’t teach you!”

I scoffed and pouted. “Even if you don’t teach me, I can learn it when I reach the right level.”

“Ha! Silly girl, do you really think forbidden spells are that easy to learn?” Shirley bristled as if offended—literally bristling, her tail fur standing on end. “Let me tell you responsibly! Even among Saint ranks, fewer than five know any forbidden spells! And I, the great Saint Shirley! I am the strongest pastor, known as the encyclopedia of forbidden spells! I am the only Saint who masters all branches of forbidden spells! I won’t teach you; there’s no one in all of Yade who can teach you the Holy Light forbidden spells!”

“Yes, yes, you’re amazing…” I nodded extremely perfunctorily, making Shirley’s face twitch with anger, cat whisker patterns appearing.

“Hmph!” Shirley huffed, then threw another Heaven’s Punishment with her tickle stick. “Considering you drank 28 bottles of Zi Mu River water, I’ll forgive you…”

Pfff! Hahaha! Let’s see if I can still laugh then! That joke will amuse me for a hundred years!

“…”

So what exactly is so terrible about drinking 28 bottles of Zi Mu River water?! 28 eggs? Or 28 times larger eggs? Or some other horrifying thing?

I felt like something huge was coming! Something earth-shattering for me!

I had to mention the super boss I almost forgot: Backer Patriarch Antun X-12345.

Type X, if I remembered correctly, was just a freebie model among demonic constructs.

If even a freebie model is this **, how strong would the official version be? I couldn’t imagine; it would probably be a boss close to Saint rank.

But this freebie model was still no match for a Saint, especially one like Shirley who spammed forbidden spells without thinking…

“S-so strong! An NPC! Truly a Saint! Forbidden spells thrown out like nothing?” Huo Jinjin tightly held onto a long spike protruding from the Backer Patriarch Antun’s back. “Such a huge creature, and she kills it like slaughtering a chicken or dog, throwing forbidden spells without even panting…”

Hearing Huo Jinjin’s exclamation, Shirley finally lifted her tail smugly. “This is the reaction an adventurer should have when seeing us… Learn from me, you stinky fox! If it weren’t for the fact that you’ve given me a hundred years of laughs, I’d have called the guards to throw you in jail!”

So what exactly is so terrifying that it gives you a hundred years of laughs?! The more I thought about it, the more scared I got!

Anyway, this Backer Patriarch Antun X-12345, though huge, was far below Saint rank. Soon, Shirley’s holy light bombardment made it kneel and beg for mercy.

“Can I have the last hit?” I asked weakly.

“In your dreams! I never said I’d kill it!” Shirley made a face at me. “It’s rare to capture a large demonic construct alive. The value of taking it alive is far greater than killing it… But don’t worry, you’ll still get your quest reward!”

【Main Quest “Search for the Giant Beast Remains” completed.】

【Quest Reward: Level +1】

A quest reward that directly increased my level!

Amid the gorgeous level-up light effects, Yingning reached level 40, the others neared the 40 mark, and I reached level 43.

【Next quest auto-acquired: Rescue at Minos.】

“Your turn,” Shirley beckoned to Alexia.

The cool female swordsman nodded, then lightly swung her sword downward. “Sword Art: Seal!”

An invisible wave pressed down from the sky; as it neared, it turned into a sky-blue net that spread for miles, wrapping us and the massive creature beneath us inside. However, the net’s holes were large, so it didn’t restrict our movements.

The net slowly shrank, along with the X-12345 demonic construct beneath us, until it became a soccer-ball-sized lump. Only then did we see its full appearance: a large turtle, entirely crimson, with golden runes inscribed on its back.

Watching the turtle in Alexia’s hand, Shirley looked unusually solemn. “Recently, sleeping demonic constructs have been awakening frequently… Could it really be…”

“Don’t overthink,” Alexia cut off Shirley’s murmuring. “Adventurers, I need you to help us with one more task.”

Yingning bowed respectfully. “Please give your orders, Your Holiness.”

“No need to be so formal. From now on, you can call me teacher. Enough idle chatter—time is short. I need you to return to Minos City immediately, infiltrate the city defense dungeon, rescue a goblin named Ivan, and bring him to the northern watchtower. We’ll wait for you there.” Alexia’s expression was unreadable. “Shirley and I have our movements recorded at the Jiu Hua Alliance Sanctum, so we cannot break into the prison ourselves. Doing so would violate the Alliance’s Saint Concord… But you’re different. Only you can do this.”

“Besides, the commotion here is huge. It’s probably already caught the attention of the internal administrators in Minos City. Some people might guess what we’re up to and increase security, or even hire adventurers to cause you trouble… Be careful. I’m looking forward to holding your daughter.” Shirley also shed her usual flippant demeanor, wearing a serious expression.

I could tell without thinking that the next part would be the old cliché about demonic races awakening. So unoriginal. I couldn’t understand why games always had some demon-like race constantly trying to conquer cities.

But the plot didn’t matter; what we cared about was the quest reward!

I said, “We’ll complete the mission! And, since we’ve known each other for two days, maybe… some… extra… quest… perks… or something?”

Shirley rolled her eyes, then smacked me with her tickle stick, sending me flying to the foot of Minos City’s walls. After a long while, her anger-laden reply drifted over: “No. Leave.”
